I love hearing the recollections of a warfighter that “doesn’t talk about it”. From Desert Storm as a Marine Recon unit (who have you ever heard talk about being on the ground in Desert Storm?) to Army Green Beret to CIA Contractor, Alan Cooper spills a few beans …
Here’s one for those of you who live on the road:
It’s absurd British fun. I shall not be held liable for any mental health issues that might ensue.
I tried it out @schurem. Too absurd for me believe it or not.
Instead I’ve been listening to this 4.5 hr podcast … a sobering recollection of Seal Team 6 Operator DJ Shipley …
This cat has nine lives.
All of his shows hit pretty hard. The Ed Calderon one was my favorite I think.
Some harder than others. I think the DJ Shipley podcast was the best podcast I’ve ever listened to … and I’ve listened to probably thousands so far. I was surprised to hear that he got hooked up with Marcus Capone’s program regarding psychedelic drug therapy. I posted about that a few posts up. It straightened him right out and he got his life back on track instead of swallowing a .45.
I might have to revisit the Ed Calderon episode. I couldn’t get into it the first time … not interested in the “drug war”.
Here’s an interesting one I heard about today … 9 Volt Nirvana! …
It’s about how trans-cranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can help us focus our attention.
Then again … can you imagine a SF guy getting addicted to tDCS!!! That sounds like a recipe for disaster. F U DARPA!
Has anyone found a good general aviation podcast, ideally with a technical / educational lens?
I’ve listened to The Finer Points a bit, which I found good in principle, but the episodes are really short (8-10 mins) so if you’re running or something, you end up spending too much time listening to the music and faff at the start and at the end too much.
I’ve also tried AviatorCast - the episodes are longer but unfortunately I find the guy spends way too much time getting to the actual meat in the content. I’ve enjoyed single episodes such as his AAR about flying a Cessna from Alaska south through Canada and back for an equipment upgrade…but generally I find myself feeling “well I’ll never get those 10 minutes back” when, a fair way into an episode, he is still thanking followers and talking about how good this episode’s content will be.
Try the fighter pilot podcast, and the F14 project Bio is doing.
I got nothing in terms of general aviation podcasts Bear. I do like watching Jimmy put together airplanes on YouTube though …
Jimmy is pretty mysterious and at one point I thought he might be an ex Navy SEAL but he’s just Air Force ha ha! All his friends/helpers are ex military as well.
Further to the DJ Shipley podcast I posted, here he is teaching a great pistol shooting exercise called backplate shooting … for the times when you have zero time to aim down your sites … just pure instinctual shooting. Try it out next time you’re at the range.
Fantastic F-14 Tomcat podcast done by those who flew and Maintained Her
So basically put the thing on the thing. I think that some instructors teach this, but don’t index on the slide. Point and shoot without using sites. For instance, if the Sig guy bashes Glocks due to the slide design, what if you carry a revolver? I did a full day snubby course (500 rounds) where we did a lot of 3 - 5 yd point and shoot. We also did a 10” steel plate walk back to demonstrate how accurate they were with their tiny iron sites. I was in until 50 yds which was surprising. The winner made it to 75 yds. With a J frame.
I guess all those operator types are carrying red dot optics on their pistols now, now so it make sense that they would tape the optic and index on the slide. Need to try that the next time at the range.
How’s that for a topic derailment?

Possibly one of the best podcasts I’ve heard in a long time concerning The TomCat,Naval Aviation and The Role of The LSO….also one of the most famous battles of the Afghan War told from a side I never heard or knew about.
oooo, that looks juicy!
