Yes. I had the same problem (only much worse) with Tenet and Dunkirk. I don’t understand the desire to obscure the dialogue to the degree that it’s incomprehensible.
Dunkirk was fine for me but I needed subtitles for Tenet. And still couldn’t follow the story.
FX/Disney+/Hulu adaptation of James Clavelle’s Shogun started this week. Two episodes in and I’m hooked so far.
It is hit and miss for us as well.
Every now and again we will be watching something where either the ‘booms & bangs’ or the music drowns out all the dialogue. No amount of tweaking with sound settings helps.
I, also have to turn on subtitles for a lot of movies.
Headphones. These things are probably mixed by a dude wearing quality studio headphones.
Never thought of that, worth a try. The bride has a decent bluetooth headset.
I will need to buy a cordless though…
Just out of the cinema, after watching Dune Part 2.
I will not say anything.
But my DMs are open
Maybe it’s me, but I think the phrase “decent enough soundbar” belongs up there with phrases like “worst in a long line of bad Mustangs”, “really good integrated Intel graphics”, or “best pile of dog crap I’ve ever stepped in.”
As someone who uses a receiver and 5.1 (or 7.1) setups in 2 different rooms in my house, my feeling is the best soundbar is the one you didn’t buy in favor of a discrete system! I need to hear and feel what I’m watching from all around me.
Now while I whole heartedly endorse the “Chris Nolan films’ soundmixing has all been awful since his last Batman” sentiment (my experience with Interstellar in the theater was almost completely trashed by it*), I didn’t have any trouble with Dune. In fact, my sole complaint about Dune part 1 is…Hans Zimmer is no Toto. The score is fine, but I really miss those themes from '84!
*Chris Nolan has the mistaken idea that he can just crank up the music and effects over dialog that is unimportant without altering the volume of the dialog, while other directors simply mute the dialog so it’s inaudible and you know what the characters are saying is unimportant. Yet then the audience feels like they should be able to hear them clearly because they’re still speaking aloud. The audible equivalent of either taking a shower or dumping on perfume/cologne to mask the smell…same idea, totally different result!
Yes too many times - wondered if it was related to the natural change in frequencies you hear in supposedly as you get older.
But yes 90 - 100% volume to hear the dialogue in loads of films generally - then get deafened by the first car door opening noise or something.
Interstellar on my proper sound system is OK (again, I use the “dialog lift” function in the amp), but yeah - Tenet was awful.
It never occurred to me that the dialogue was unimportant though
This is actually a well known, well documented problem.
Why Movie Dialogue Is So Hard To Understand These Days | by Sean Kernan | Mind Cafe | Medium.
Dune 1 in theaters was an audible feast! My review a thousand posts above was that it may well be the first big-ticket film wholly suitable for the blind. And really that is all I ask of a filmmaker: make it for the theater. How it get’s processed for viewing on Netflix should not be his problem unless that was the intended original platform. Also, I have a Sonos soundbar and love it! We can’t all be audiophiles! With the little dialog preset ticked, Dune and Interstellar were both watchable without subtitles.
Double feature afternoon. Watched a couple of oldies 12 Angry Men and Time Cop.
12 Angry Men (1957)

Time Cop (1994)

Time Cop (1994)
12 Angry Men is definitely worthy of a watch and Time Cop is still a good popcorn movie.

Time cop
Feel the same way about the movie and was just a little surprised to see it had such a low rating on IMDb.

My wife’s brother will quite often send me random anime DVDs (He’s a fan and I’m a sucker for animated shows, of any genre).
I just watched the first two epsides of the ‘live action’ version of One Piece. I knew absolutely nothing about it, but enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
Solid 8.5 out of 10 from me.
Update: Totally binge worthy. Interesting world, characters and story; quirky, but what Japanese manga/anime isn’t?
The fights are really well choreographed, and quite bloody so possibly not as (younger) child friendly as the ‘cartoon’… don’t know, I’ve never seen it.
After watching all the episodes I have uprated it slightly.
Working away I got an apartment with NEtflix so I am catching up on stuff I wanted to see forever.
Finally watched season 2 and 3 of Love + Death + Robots and loved it all
Watched “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and it was genuinely some of the best cinematography I’ve ever seen.
Absolutely brilliant.
Watched also see good stuff like Bloodshot with Vin Diesel
Now I am curious about what people around here suggest. Black Mirror seems a great choice.
Bodies
Queens Gambit
Narcos (haven‘t seen it yet!)
Movies you probably know already: Interstellar, Ex Machina
The warrior, a 3 season banger made by the Bruce Lee estate on the basis of his writings. You will love it.
Oh hell yeah, I loved those. I think I got them on Amazon Prime?
