What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

The NYT posted a story yesterday about how Russia is using the film internally as a propaganda engine. There, it is cleverly called “End of an Empire”. Russians think America’s game is up and this film is more of a pre-history documentary on how it will soon happen. They may be right!

I mean, 1993 was 31 years ago. I was a teenager, but, still. We’re getting old man.

That reminds me- there’s a Rocketeer cartoon my kids have been really fond of, and the boy is probably almost old enough for the movie.

Because it’s never too early to start teaching your kids that Nazis are bad. Plus, Timothy Dalton, Terry O’Quinn, and Jennifer Connelly were so much fun to watch in that one.

Iron Sky was on the tele last night and I had to watch it again, a bit like the Rocketeer movie it is really cheesy, cliche and you have to totally suspend any disbelief… But I like both of them

Yup. I still am trying to come to terms with the fact that the girl from Jurassic Park which also came out in 1993 is now in her mid 40’s.

Oh, I guess it is time for me to mention stuff like:

  • “Forrest Gump”'s release date is closer to the Vietnam War than to present day.

  • “Apollo 13” was released closer to the actual event than to present day

  • everyone who played a role in “The Misfits” (1961) is dead.

  • Elijah Wood (Frodo) is now older than Viggo Mortensen was when he played Aragorn.

Edit: Oh, and if you were born before 1985 then your date of birth is closer to WWII than to present day.

Forgot to mention: If you were born before the 17th of November 1971 then your date of birth is closer to World War One than to now.

I’m Oct 1972 so I barely made that cut-off!

Then that’s a fun fact to tell your guests on your next birthday!

I like those kind of things. Easy to compute yet fun/horrifying.

Works best with world events or pop culture products. Or here on Mudspike with planes, like that F-86/F-15 picture.

Still applies to WWII though!

Today I ticked off two more ittems from my movie bucket list- Weird Al “UHF” and James Caan “rollerball”

Both great movies in very different ways.
Supremely happy to have seen them.

One of my favourite films growing up

Mine too. I own it on blue ray and dvd. I’ve also got Strategic Air Command and A Gathering of Eagles as well. Cinematic masterpieces if you ask me. They (unfortunately) don’t make 'em like that anymore.

UHF holds a special place in my memory since it was one of the earliest movies I saw while out on a date. Ah those teenage years were special!

Apparently there is a remastered Half Life 2 being worked on right now. You can find it on Steam.

I know right? And the comedy in that movie is simply genius that never grows old.

Has anyone here seen Gladiator 2 yet? The overall impression I’m getting from the critics reviews is “solid movie but not as good as the original”.
