What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

Oh it’s pure mid-tier Trek. Not as horrible as Picard, but nowhere as good as DS9 or TNG. It did lead the way for Strange New Worlds, so I’ll always love it for that, at least. I’m glad it tried to do something different, even if it didn’t always succeed.

Its first season was absolutely brilliant. Even S2 was pretty good. But it lost its way, lost focus and became something a bit disjointed and unfocused, even forgettable. Which is a shame.

Lets be honest, all of them had HORRIBLE episodes. But they were rarely back to back. Although Voyager has some real stinkers (30 days, i HATE 30 days) But always recovered which when discovery started to decline, it never managed

Hah, I kind of feel the opposite, I had more fun with the show when they went to the future. It was ridiculous, but I expected that going in.

Nope, I don’t get it.
As far as I’m concerned, every single Star Trek series from the 60s to the present fits in a 7.0-8.5 scale. I’m neither willing to overlook flaws due to certain strengths or ignore some good work due to certain flaws.

Individual episodes may be better or worse, but I cannot comprehend these “series X is vastly superior to series Y” opinions. Might as well tell me that your car is so much better than mine because you have 2 more cupholders and rate yours 5/5 and mine 2/5 based on that.

Every “bad” series had good episodes better than the worst episodes of the “good” series.

I just assume all these people who proclaim “this one is TRASH and that one is PURE BLISS!” are bipolar.

If anyone can point to where I said I hated Discovery, fine.

I merely said that I am not convinced it sits in the Prime timeline. Doesn’t mean I hate it. I thought it had definitely ‘run its course’ by the time it was cancelled/not renewed, but I didn’t hate it.

Same as the kelvin timeline Trek movies and Picard. I don’t hate those either. In fact, I really like what they did with Picard season 1 and what happened to Icheb was a real gut punch for me.

Did a search didn’t see it here. Watched it on Netflix.

That totally flew under my radar. I like De Niro and I like a taut political thriller and I have a Netflix subscription… I will have to give it a go.

Thanks.

Just watched the first episode. I like it + best use of a Sex Pistols song ever.

Here was me thinking it was just going to be a run of mill thriller until the final minutes :astonished:

I am now going to have to watch episode 2… Like right now.

Watched for the first time in years (and the first time not on cable/vhs) and it’s still SO GOOD!!

I was worried maybe it wouldn’t hold up, but it was even better than I remembered it somehow. Nice to see it on a big screen too. The disc had a great documentary, lots of interviews with the cast, special effects artists, learned Jed was a half wolf (!) which seems crazy.

Carpenter at his best IMHO.

I saw Gladiator II on a friends big screen TV yesterday afternoon. As far as sequels go it was watchable but it definitely did not surpass the original. I personally rated it a solid 6/10 and IMDb shows it at 6.6/10 so my rating is pretty much on par with everyone.

I will say that it was not a must see on the big screen epic.

Sorry. Don’t recognize the screenshot. What (Carpenter?) movie is that?

Oh sorry I should have said! It’s ’The Thing’

The '80s were the highpoint of sci-fi horror.

The Thing, Alien, Aliens, Terminator, The Fly (remake)… that’s just off the top of my head.

Great story/screenplay, great direction, great acting, practical special effects.

Give me that any day over the mass produced CGI fests that get served up today.
