What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

Train Dreams picked up four Oscar nominations!! Unfortunately the best actor category was not one of them… so much of this film’s success was due to Joel Edgerton and the Best Picture nomination is certainly a nod towards his performance in this film. Either way, pretty exciting for an independent film that was shot in small town locations around here with lots of local talent and support.

Just going by the trailer, this looks great. Haven’t seen any reviews.

I just finished Train Dreams on Netflix. Feel like I meditated for an hour or so and took a long hike through the woods. I love it and highly recommend it to all of you.

It is a very poetic movie with little discernible plot or motive, but to me it carries great meaning. YMMV.

Yep. Beautiful film. Totally my speed. As in: about as far from a Marvel franchise as it is possible to get.

had a couple of chilled out weeks, with the eldest and youngest going on holiday to Tokyo for 10 days (and bringing much merch back with them)

whilst they were off Mrs murphy and myself settled in and did some binge watching.

starting with netflicks Frankenstein

pretty good, not exactly to the book, but not bad

Then knives out, Wake up dead man

again not bad, but not as good as the previous two films.. one small interesting fact. the exterior set for the church was just outside Waltham Abbey where I grew up. Its at High beach in Epping forest, and its not the only time its been in media. It was also heavily mentioned in James Hurbert’s The Lair, Rats series

the we absolutely hammered The Umbrella Academy, this was very good, seasons 1 and 2 stand out, 3 and 4 were ok (with most series these days they can never stick the endings)

Finally Murderbot, another cracking good series (if a touch short) with a second season possibly in the works

If you are some more good sci-fi, I just finished watching Pluribus. It took me a while because it is the slowest of slow burns & definitely not something you could binge.

I nearly gave up but glad I didn’t. Worth sticking it out it IMHO.

Same. It pushed all the right buttons for me. Right up there with Severance, Andor And The Pitt.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)

Quote

Four armed men hijack a New York City subway car and demand a ransom for the passengers. The city’s police are faced with a conundrum: Even if it’s paid, how could they get away?

  • Walter Matthau (Lt. Garber - transit cop)
  • Jerry Stiller (Lt. Rico Patrone - transit cop)
    • Ben Stiller’s dad. part of the comedy team of Stiller and Meara, and George’s dad on Seinfeld.
  • Doris Roberts (The mayor’s wife)
    • Had a bit part in this movie as the wife of the mayor but is likely best remembered as Raymond’s mom Marie in the TV series Everybody loves Raymond. It was not until I was looking at the cast list on the IMDb page for the movie that I had any idea it was her playing that part.

The Hijackers were played by

  • Robert Shaw (Mr. Blue)
    • Played Quint in the movie Jaws the following year
  • Martin Balsam (Mr. Green)
  • Hector Elizondo (Mr. Grey)
    • He had several memorable roles.
  • Earl Hindman (Mr. Brown)
    • Played Wilson in the TV series Home Improvement. I had no clue it was him while I was watching the movie.

There have been two remakes of this movie and even with all star casts neither one was as good as the original version.

  • The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1998)
    • Edward James Olmos - Det. Anthony Piscotti
    • Lorraine Bracco - Det. Ray
    • Lisa Vidal - Babs Cardoza
    • Kenneth Welsh - Caz Hollowitz
    • Vincent D’Onofrio - Mr. Blue
    • Donnie Wahlberg - Mr. Grey
    • Richard Schiff - Mr. Green
    • Tara Rosling - Mr. Brown
  • The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)
    • Denzel Washington - Walter Garber
    • John Travolta - Ryder
    • Luis Guzmán - Phil Ramos(as Luis Guzman)
    • Victor Gojcaj - Bashkin
    • Robert Vataj - Emri
    • John Turturro - Camonetti
    • Michael Rispoli - John Johnson
    • Ramón Rodríguez - Delgado(as Ramon Rodriguez)
    • James Gandolfini - Mayor
    • John Benjamin Hickey - Deputy Mayor LaSalle

The Viper may well go down in history as Peak Airplane.

You mean, in a good way, right?

Let’s say yes, but the truth is that it clearly shows you, or better suggests you, whether or not you would be able to function as a paramedic.

It’s not what graphically violent happens on the screen that breaks you, but what it makes you think about.

I’ve seen worse violence in a lot of movies, but in this one you are along for a hellish ride of the “this is how human life ends around you every day and you don’t even know about it“ variety.

It really makes you understand how much normal people don’t and shouldn’t experience, and yet paramedics do and sometimes very very under appreciatedly so.

So to answer your question better - it really depends, do you want to think about what paramedics do and know?

Are you sure?

I thought I was, and I wasn’t ready for it.

But I’d definitely watch it again, especially with friends that didn’t see it.

In short - this movie was not made to comfort you. Not in the slightest.

Free on Amazon Prime.

That is a great movie, because what sets it apart is the authenticity. Especially the black humour.

First responders don’t get enough credit for what they do.

Yeah, this is perfectly concise way to what I tried to convey with a word salad!

And Rainn Wilson is a goddamned fine actor- he managed to break cleanly and completely from the Dwight Schrute role he had in the Office, which must not have been an easy task.

He’s an absolute genius and at least in my eyes a much underrated actor.
