What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

OMG, it’s absolutely brilliant!

Wow, a positively well made Mortal Kombat movie I don’t have to be ashamed to like?

Sub Zero looks AWESOME.

Favourite part is him stabbing Scorpion, grabbing the jet of blood, freezing it and STABBING HIM AGAIN WITH IT!!!

Love the little hint of the classic mortal Kombat theme at the end …

The Hunters (1958)…

A comparion with Bridges at Toko-Ri is obvious; preferably The Hunters, although the Panthers are more attractive than the Sabres…

Eight on the Lam

Any fan of Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, and Jonathon Winters should enjoy the movie.

Not really all that surprising, The area as it looks now looks nothing like what you see in the picture.

This was the wrong location: https://tinyurl.com/1ffg1nf6

The Hunters is an enjoyable movie and worth a watch, especially if you are a fan of air combat, and as long as you understand that it is similar to Salter’s book in title, subject matter, and location. It does not follow the book’s plot or depth by any means. As far as my fondness of the novel, I thought well enough of it to gift it to an author friend who was giving me Ford and Steinbeck.

Watched Talladega Nights last night and I just finished watching Scrooged.

Talladega Nights

Some funny moments but not one I will watch again any time soon. If you have not seen it I would not dissuade you from giving it a watch.

Scrooged.

I would have preferred to watch it during Christmas time but not so much that I wanted to pay to watch it. It is available for free on Amazon Prime at the moment.

A much more accurate depiction of NASCAR and the people around it than any movie since Stroker Ace.

The only things they got wrong were the utter lack of Bojangles and Cheerwine.

Too funny, and true lol

Honestly there is something about Will Ferrell and John C Reilly working together that just breaks me. They are so so funny in Step-brothers and Talladega.

Ricky Bobby’s first interview after his first race win just makes me cry laugh everytime.

I have really come to like the work of Dave Bautista. I just grin ear to ear every time I watch Guardians of the Galaxy and the part he plays with that superb character. His small parts in other movies like Blade Runner 2049 really show a talent for acting with this man. I am a huge Frank Herbert fan and go back and read the Dune series of books on a regular basis. I am really looking forward to seeing him as “Beast Rabban” in the upcoming “Dune” movie. I think he is going to be perfect for that part.

If only he’d been around 17 years ago when they were making the third Blade movie.

Irma la Douce (1963)

Has some funny moments but it almost is a film of its time.

Some of the supporting cast came as a surprise though.

Floyd the Barber (Howard McNear) as the Concierge at the Hotel.
Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) of Star Trek as one of the working girls.
(Bill Bixby) and (James Caan) with minor roles. It looks to be Bill’s first credited role but his second movie appearance. Bill had done several credited TV roles before this role. Same with James regarding having had several TV roles before this movie and like Bill as this was his first movie role with only a few seconds of screen time and no dialogue he was not credited for the role.

We watched The Social Dilemma with the kids tonight. It was interesting to hear the opinions of some of the “Founding Fathers” of the rapidly evolving technology of social platforms. I think most people would recognize at least some of the behaviors in themselves. Some of the speakers were the kind of people you could spend hours listening to - I suppose their code was as compelling as their personalities. I’m so glad I’m not a child growing up in this deluge of information…

A bit off the thread topic, but Shoshana Zuboff, who briefly appeared in the trailer wrote a book on the topic titled “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism”. Bit of a tome but an interesting read.

A generation of children who may not be able to as they said in the film “have the capability to solve our problems.” Heck, look where our generations, both yours and mine are now. I don’t see much problem solving going on with them either. Climate Change was known decades ago, yet here we are. Deregulation of corporations or financial interests was widely known to be a bad thing, yet look what’s been allowed to happen for the last three decades. (Recent example, Texas’ electrical grid, one among many.)

A very scary documentary IMHO but one that should be seen by all. They covered quite a bit but I thought the last 20 minutes or so was where the serious points were finally driven home, repeatedly including ideas of where we need to go as a society to fix this mess we are in. I particularly liked the hippie looking guy with the long braids, will have to look many of these people up on TED Talks.

I also thought it interesting that basically all the tech gurus they interviewed stated they don’t allow their kids on social media or in the very least severely restrict their access. Telling.
