Where Are You Photos [2022]

That is a great photo! Maybe a little closer than I would be comfortable with, but I guess that is probably normal when working a ridge…. I am assuming that communication is key.

I’m out in Salt Lake City for work until Friday. Finished early, so I ventured up to the Big Cottonwood Canyon. Hiked the Lake Blanche trail. 6.8 miles round trip. The 3.4 mile trail climbs over 2750ft in elevation to just about 9000ft. The last mile covered in snow and all uphill. I wanted to die.

Jeeze, I feel like I just tarnished @ST0RM’s gorgeous landscapes with a stupid traffic pic so I present to you, “Why I can’t have anything nice”.

I once had to take an exam in load balancing regulations. It was a practical examination, ie. You had to load the load a cording to regs and passed if ok. I was last in line. Watched the other students struggle calculating and tetrissing against time and being watched. Boy did they sweat. Some failed.

So I took a good look at the weights involved. There was only one item heavy enough to go over the 10% “it matters” margin. So I parked that one just a smidge over the axle, nonchalantly kicked the rest of the boxes in, gave a big ship-eating grin to the examiner and got a wink and a pass

Still happy I learned the rules of proper loading. It makes the difference between money in the bank, or a world of hurt.

@ST0RM, that looks like a great trip man, chicken soup for the soul.

I got home from SLC on Friday afternoon and was treated with some Harriers from VMA-231. Cell snaps for now.

Nice ones @ST0RM

I wanted to check out what the EOS R5 has to offer on terms of dynamic range. Here’s where I hit its limit, the sky was just recoverable while the dark shadows on the tree and in the bushes were completely without detail:

I know I should have used a tripod and bracketed the shots to show the difference but hey, it wasn’t meant to be a scientific test

Derby, how do you manage with the electronic viewfinder?

I just bought a used 6D and am planning ahead for the 6R purchase in 10 years. Lagging behind just ever so slightly.

In most situations I prefer it to an optical viewfinder, it’s pretty great.

There are some limitations when it comes to shooting fast action but I have learned to work around it. While the EVF of the EOS R was very limited when shooting action and you quickly lost your subject when you weren’t shooting with both eyes open (one looking through the EVF, one following the subject) this is not nearly as much of an issue with the R5. It’s still essentially showing you a slideshow of the pictures you have taken which induces some lag but with the electronic shutter and in H+ mode it’s a 20fps slideshow and with a little practice it’s easy to compensate for the lag.

If you want a lag-free EVF you’ll have to look at the EOS R3 or the Nikon Z9, both incredible professional sports cameras.

So for normal shooting it’s absolutely fantastic, you don’t even really notice that you’re essentially looking at a screen and the exposure simulation that EVFs offer is honestly fantastic.

The Z9 sure is a sexy looking packages from all I’ve seen. They are definitely gunning at the Canon sport shooting crowd with that one!

Definitely. I am really curious to see what Canons R1 is going to look like in terms of spec. I bet it’s going to be insane as well.
The EOS R7 is rumoured to feature 30fps burst at 32MP (probably the EOS 90D sensor??) With the electronic shutter and 15fps with the mechanical shutter, I am sure it’s going to be very popular among aspiring wildlife photographers and hobbyists.

I will get myself an RF100-500mm in the not too distant future which will make it a lot easier to shoot small birds and other wildlife. 200mm is rather short for small garden birds, even if you have a feeder set-up.

Did some backwoods truckin’ today! Not the friendliest conditions for a tractor trailer … luckily I had a short “pup” trailer. Time to exfil! :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s always great to get out of the city into the Muskoka and Haliburton regions of Ontario; we call it cottage country … I’m sure a lot of you are familiar with it. I’ve been coming up here all my life and I’m always in awe at how much Canadian Shield they had to blast through to lay these highways! …

I saw a moose crossing sign on the way up. I couldn’t find any in the countless marshes along the way …

I did see a wolf cross the road though! Reminded me of the biggest bear I’ve ever seen cross the road while I was running out of Nephton, Ontario.
