Where Are You Photos [2023]

Check out my auto focus guide on the photography gear thread here : Photography Gear: The Camera & Lenses Thread - #17 by Derbysieger

It’s for the EOS R5 but all canons are similar, lower end cameras might lack some features but it’s all recognisable.

I am on a cycling tour this week and we’ve been very lucky with the weather so far. Two days in, two days to go:

Thanks! That’s kind of you to say.

I’ll look into that, I was hoping to avoid manual for a little while as I got the hang of things but maybe I should try.

Thinking about it I also probably need to just get out there and keep practicing, for some reason my head is still stuck in 35mm land and I’m being overly cautious about when to take the picture.

Heh, yeah I can see how that works. But with digital, you don’t have to snipe your shots anymore. Spray n pray bud! It’s a machinegun now!

Awesome. Thanks for the autofocus guide.

Here are a couple of Fairy Wrens - A male who is just coming into his ‘courtship’ plumage and his girlfriend. The subject wasn’t as ‘sharp’ as it could be, maybe because the little buggers flit all over the place and won’t sit still for more than a nanosecond.

I took these in burst mode (20fps) and servo AF but of nearly 100 shots these are the only two that even came close…

Nice photo’s - I have a Canon, but it’s quite old and not that complicated (tho’ well complicated enough for a brainless beginner like me!) - an SX160.

I think it’s outstanding, though - all the photo’s I upload here that aren’t phone shots are taken with the SX160.

b tw we have several collared doves here, too - there are a pair that are always raiding our bird feeders - we named them "Ringo " and “Colleen”

That one of the female is really nice. Almost looks like the feathers are iridescent on the male? Pretty cool.

Thanks Johnny - yes the options are pretty overwhelming for me too on this thing!

Gonna try and work within the automatic modes as much as possible, although even with automatic looks like there’s still a lot to learn.

Those doves are nice, also have some very striking looking scrub jays around I’m hoping to get some photos of soon. Plenty of hawks and some falcons close by too, but I’m going to need to get much better if I want to catch those.

Thanks

I will get some more shots of him in Spring. By then his entire head and chest will be covered in those irridescent blue feathers.

The last two days were hilly but pretty short. Only about 80km each day but with a total of 2200m in climbs (both days combined). Tomorrow is gonna be the final day back to Duisburg. About 140km with a total of about 1300m in climbs. Weather is supposed to be shiz again so let’s hope the forecast is just as precise as it was over the last three days
We had feared nonstop rain but as you can see in the pictures we didn’t really get much rain.

Excuse my ignorance as my knowledge is quite limited, especially when it comes to armour… Is it a real Tiger Tank, or is it in fact a full size replica model…?

My daughter and I escaped the north for a while and visited my sister in her summer house. Here I was reacquainted with one of my birthdaypresents from last years half century celebrations… A parachute capsule!!

A capsue that splits open after being unlocked by a wind up motor and cog solution.

Another successful recovery after a slingshot trajectory to low treetop height.

My friends and family find it amusing that I’m still absolutely fascinated by toys like this, so I can always expect some cool presents when I celebrate another sun orbit

So today the weather gods were not with us, at least for the second half of our 130km ride. The first 60km were okay but then a light drizzle started to move in which developed into a torrential downpour as we reached Wuppertal where we dropped off our buddy at the train station after about 77km. Unfortunately the power button of my Garmin developed some cracks, water leaked in and it stopped working just as we got to the train station. I have taken it apart, disconnected the battery and I hope it will continue working once it’s all dried up so I can upload the ride.

I will say this is the first and last time I visited Wuppertal by bike. It is a terrible town, especially if you’re on a bicycle. Bike infrastructure is abysmal to nonexistent. The town is situated in a deep valley and even on a Sunday afternoon the traffic was horrific. It’s loud, stinky and of course the weather didn’t help either.

We used the phone to find the quickest way out of the town using the GraphHopper app - which led us straight up the mountain on roads with up to 20% inclines over hospital parking spaces, small back alleys, walking paths etc. Quite the adventurous route but it led us out of town quickly and away from major road traffic and we resumed our trip for the last 54km on mostly premium bike paths.

All in all a fantastic 4 day trip and we’re hoping to make it a regular thing once a year

I had something similar on a sportive, I’d left the rubber charging plug open, not realised and it was torrential. You can get replacement innards on eBay, if it’s fried.

Fingers crossed you’ll get the ride downloaded and it’ll be ok.

Amazing ride though, very envious. :biking_man: :ok_hand::slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks, yeah it was amazing (mostly, we’ll quickly forget Wuppertal).

I found EDGE 1000 back covers on eBay and AliExpress. If the thing isn’t fried (it goes into a boot-up loop where it initiates the boot-up and then turns off, so I am hopeful that it’s just some moisture that the rice I have put it in will take care off) I will order a replacement. Otherwise I will switch to wahoo or something. The new Garmin’s are way too expensive for my taste
