Alpine Garden, Kasteeltuinen Arcen, Netherlands back in May
What a shot! That’s a beautiful bird. Wow
Did you use any type of ND filter for that shot?
No, I forgot to pack my filter set when I went to Arcen. Settings are ISO50, F16, 1/6s - focus stack using 4 photos
A few pics from our hiking trip this week to the Ködnitz, Leiter and Dorfer valleys.
Excuse the potato phone quality, I’m still on Lineage OS and it lacks the proper camera firmware to take better pictures.
That’s just beautiful scenery sobek!
Followed, although I haven’t been active much lately, after some head scratching and the doc changing meds to sort out my heart rate issues. Short Zwift rides is about the best I can handle atm. Hoping for a more spirited recovery when the heat subsides.
Amazing!
Followed you back. I wish you all the best and a swift recovery
I am getting a new commuter bike this fall. Due to a few crashes and over 80000km in 6 years (!) the frame is pretty busted. I have an appointment at the bike shop tomorrow, the replacement is going to be a very similar steel/touring bike again. Not sure which colour yet. I do like my yellow work horse (RAL1028 “melon yellow”).
Things I will change with the new bike:
- mudguards that allow for wider tyres than 28mm
- 12mm through axles. It has become incredibly hard to find wheels with 5mm through axles for road bikes and the hubs only last for about 30000km. I am currently on my third rear wheel
- a more modern head light. The SON Edelux II was state of the art 6 years ago but nowadays there are much better head lights that are brighter with better coverage.
- More agressive riding position from the get go. Being my first bike with a kind of road bike-like setup I was fairly conservative with my riding position but when I got the bike I quickly removed the spacer and flipped the stem to get the handle bars lower. I have done 200km rides with 1500m climbing without issue while bike packing with camping equipment (~25kg on the bike, inkl 5l of water)
- possibly a different colour (white maybe) but as I said I do like the yellow a lot
Edit: also, I am looking at a proper road bike as well. The Patria Randonneur is surprisingly fast and at 14kg not too heavy when you consider it is a steel bike with lights, a dynamo, a rack and mudguards but since I regularly overtake road bikes on climbs on this one I imagine having a proper light weight road bike would be a lot of fun and I am really curious what I could do with a bike half the weight. I am seriously considering the Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 8 Di2 right now, especially since there’s a Canyon Service partner close by.
Fun fact, I overtook a sprinter type on a climb who passed us at ~40km/h on the flat just before that climb during my recent bike packing tour. He was on a carbon road bike while my Steel bike was loaded up with about 20kg
New bike day congrats!! Enjoy… obvs we need pictures.
Edit:

That would be how you would fly past me. My body type is Sprinter, too big overall from handling livestock.
It’s gonna take a few weeks but I will post pictures when I pick it up. Patria frames are custom build to to fit the rider, so tomorrow the shop will take my measurements and I will order the bike. It usually takes 4-8 weeks from ordering the bike to delivery.
I’m excited for you. I’ve never had a custom built bike, but imagine it must be great to ride long distance.
To be fair to him I was dipping into the red on the steeper sections (climb got up to 17% at the steepest point, averaging 11% over 1.5km) while he was working hard but did not seem to be quite on the limit as I was. He definitely had a compact cassette as well (11-25T maybe) with standard 52/36T chainrings while I am on compact 50/34T chainrings and a standard 11-28T cassette. As soon as the climb flattened off to ~3-4% gradient he overtook me again with ease.
Oh yes, when you get on a bike that is custom built to fit your exact measurements you really feel it. I hope to avoid hard crashes in future - particularly the one this winter was bad. Not for me (I slipped on ice and didn’t even have a scratch, just some light contusions on my hip) but it cracked my bottom bracket and destroyed my crankset (ultegra fc-r8000 with about 20000km on it
The frame still holds on but it’s just a matter of time before it’s gone. I am lucky it’s a steel bike and not aluminium or carbon.
Edit: of course only wheighing 53-55kg, currently just below 54kg, helps a lot when it’s time to go up mountains. My FTP is around 225W, giving me about 4W/kg which is nothing to sniff at (last test was about two months ago but I don’t think it has changed much, I don’t have a powermeter or a home trainer so I have to visit a buddy to test it)
I had the urge to do some astronomy this week, seeing as I am at home for a few days. This is the Bubble Nebula (NGC7635), found in the constellation Cassiopeia. Not my best shot by any means, but I’m happy that the stars are nice and round, which means my Polar alignment, tracking and guiding were good.
Hey. I gave you a follow as well.

I try to get out most days that I can, and pushing myself past 60km for my long rides at the moment … but I end up with a headache about 4 hours after I get off the bike.
Nice, I followed you as well. Make sure you eat and drink enough during your rides. As a rule of thumb I go with 500ml of water for every 30min if I’m pushing it on warm days and I start eating power bars and nuts basically as soon as I get on my bike, I also like to take one or two salami sausages on really long rides to mix it up a little but the most important thing is to have enough water for your ride. If I do more than 60km I usually take 2L, on really long rides (120km+) I plan some stops to refill my bottles. If you have a heart rate monitor you can try and do some Zone 2 endurance training as well. It’s what I do in preperation for long rides.
Yeah that does sound like hypoglycemia.
yep, I know because I experienced the same thing after riding 120km in 3h20min on 1l of water and two bananas. Even though I immediately drank 1.5l as soon as I got home I still ended up with a burning headache that evening. If you think you are drinking enough, take an other sip
