I’m onboard with Syria - I own it. I don’t have Germany and didn’t really plan on buying it anytime soon. I recently shelled out for the CH-47 less out of interest in it than wanting go move big crates in Foothold. Probably could have done that with a free-ware alternative.
It would be fun to do a sort of retro Cold War type setup..which I do believe Leka offers. By the way..rather than spending any cash on anyone here..it would be great if you guys are enjoying Foothold to send a cup of coffee his way. I’ve donated already..I’m sure he would appreciate anything..AND if we had any personal wish-list items it might nudge him to working on any special requests (no guarantees of course). You might want to mention Mudspike in your donation (see..I know about the lobbying power of cash!)…
This sounds excellent. The Syria map is very nice, I flew on it on Enigma’s Cold War server back in the day. 70ies smells like Phantoms, Skyhawks and Hueys Only opfor is slightly overpowered with the MiG-21bis, I guess.
I think I will prefer the Syria 70ies setting over the Germany 89. Though the Germany 89 mission might bring a lot of memories from my time as conscript in the Bundeswehr
Are there still any active ‘web map’ things like Olympus active on DCS? Sometimes I would like to sit back with a coffee and watch Jenrick as a small icon attack FARPs in a web browser rather than put the bucket on. I’ll set it up etc but was curious before hitting the googlywoogly.
The hoggit thing looks quite custom. I’m good with leaflet and the map, and getting data in/out of DCS so I could knock something up. Not super keen to roll own though.
There was this thing, but not sure if a planner or live - plus not clear on rehosting license etc.
EDIT: Technically it’s super easy to set up this live map on @BeachAV8R’s server but they ask they you don’t rehost the static viewer page, which then means you have to expose the DCS API stuff unauthenticated in a proxy, which is all sorts of hairy security wise I’d guess. It would easy to just knab it (it’s a single file) and add some auth, but they are pretty clear on asking people not to do that I think. C’est la vie.
I might join if Syria or the Caucuses. If it becomes a real thing and Sinai becomes the real place, I’d probably buy it. But I am personally not interested in a terrain of the week type thing where I feel compelled to buy stuff I won’t otherwise use in order to hang with friends.
Yeah..same. I turn the monitor off at night to dim the room..so I never know what the server stuff is doing..I’d love to wake up and pull up a web page that shows the situation.
We could try that if this DCS Web Viewer thing doesn’t work. I haven’t used it but it looks like Olympus is some electron client app rather than a browser view, I guess so they can sell the mobile client (which is fair enough, they wrote it). The windows app is free so it’s not the end of the world, just wanted to try a browser view first.
They seem to enjoy the complexity a bit; from the Olympus docs:
Can you help me install or troubleshoot my server setup for https so I can use it?
No, sorry, we’re at best going to link you to this post saying we won’t help. There is a channel in discord called #audio-backend-support where other Olympus users may help / provide advice if you ask nicely. Long term trawling this channel may also help you find others with the same issues.
In simple terms this is nothing to do with Olympus, highly dependent on your setup and if you need to ask for help in how to do this, or will need help troubleshooting it you’re honestly not going to be knowledgeable enough to set it up even with help. People pay good money for people with these types of skills and one of those skills is also sheer bloody mindedness and determination to figure stuff out for yourself.
However, that said, if you do have a dedicated server, some prior technical experience and more importantly that sheer bloody mindedness and determination you should give it ago. Some kind people in discord using a similar setup to you may also be willing to help if you ask nicely and go show you’ve really tried and got close. If you want to read and learn about it yourself start here:
It can be done for free (if you have a server) just as well as if you pay so don’t buy or pay for anything here. But again we’re not going to help you as we need to spend our free time with our families (we really mean creating more features), at least not unless you offer us a ride in your Spitfire, fighter jet or something equally as cool.
lol, it’s not magic. I’ll not subject poor Chris to all that
I get that. It used to be a pretty involved process to get that running. It has much improved though. There’s an installer and an Olympus Manager application which also handles updates and setting stuff up. Might not be hardened for internet exposure.
It’s also overkill for this use case (show an online map of the action)
It’s looks pretty neat, but yeah maybe overkill. Stuff nowadays like Caddy and a free cert would help it out, I just got a PTSD sort of vibe from that help text
