Camping at the trailer was always fun as a kid even when the gameboy ran out of batteries!
Actually, that didn’t happen to much we only used them for the drive to and from, and in poor weather when the adults wanted to rest.
Otherwise we had a lot of fun as kids around the fire pit engineering the tallest burning campfires that we could! Birch bark and dry pine branches were favorites - and if things were proving a bit difficult perhaps due to prior rain, my uncle would kindly toss some gas or kerosene or whatever fuel was handy on the fire to get things going!
Measured the height of the digger on the back of the lorry at 15ft 4in. Driving along my merry way and here a huge BANG at the back end. Think I’ve had a tyre blow out and crawl into the next layby off the road, woman in car follows me and says I’ve hit the bridge. (The 16ft 2in bridge… ) dented her car bonnet…
Police turn up and start accusing me of being over height and damaging the bridge. Tearing out a chunk of reinforcing re bar and a load of concrete.
luckily!!! The woman then challenges the police man and says the damage was already done and it was hanging down enough for me to catch it. Totally not my fault.
Police measure my load and find me totally not at fault and within limits. Only bit of damage to the digger was a tiny broken wire (on the lowest part of the boom weirdly) and i appear to be OK with the bosses as well as i technically didn’t do anything wrong. Lucky as F^&K
if anyone ever drives a truck here MEASURE YOUR LOAD. It might save your ass.
I was completely stunned. Wasn’t expecting that in the least so properly lost my cool. I’ve made mistakes before and always just been upfront and honest and tried my best to fix the problem or provide info to the right people who can
This was one of those out of the blue lightening strikes that left me on the back foot and terrified. Thank god for the honesty of that poor lady with the dented car. She could of cost me my career if she said the wrong thing or not Told the truth out of anger. She saved my ass.
I was within limits but it would of been a lot harder to prove without her. Not a good day at the office. But no one got hurt.
They instantly assume its the drivers fault. To be honest I was extremely lucky I wasn’t arrested on the spot. Thats normally standard practice. They obviously saw that I had the proper answers and decided to give me the benefit of the doubt. I’m still shaking a bit to be fair.
Sounds like you “get it”. Good on you. Glad it all worked out.
Whew, made me think about an ‘incident’ of my past professional career - 25 years after the fact and there’s still a physical reaction. Acknowledge it, dust yourself off, and press ahead. What else, really, can anyone do (not speaking about your incident per-se, just in general)
Our normal trucks have them fitted all around. But I’ve been in a hired in heavy duty unit for a few months and it hasn’t got them. Funnily enough I have been looking on ebay for cheap sets for just this reason. Worth their weight in gold
Bombing down the Creeper Trail…made 18 miles in one hour…normally we’d take it easy and enjoy the sights, but we wanted to be in front of the COVID horde of riders we spotted getting ready at the top…
Sorry I’ve been a bit light on the site participation this week. Been out of town with the family trying to squeeze a bit of normalcy out of this summer break for the kids. I know a couple of you have projects in the hopper with me…I appreciate your patience…I know I haven’t been the most Johnny On The Spot this past few weeks. I’ll be back at it starting tomorrow though…
The boys have two cruiser type gravel bikes…a bit older type…no drop bars or anything. Probably a wee bit large for them…but something to grow into. Marisa wasn’t feeling great this morning…so she shuttled us to the top of Whitetop Mtn and met us down in Damascus. We almost beat her down the mountain…!
Doing my (army) Captains promotion field exercise I was in the cab of a truck near the back in a small convoy. The third truck from the front had an ‘Eager Beaver’ forklift on the back. Drove under a small bridge near Ludgershall Hampshire. Truck Damaged. Forklift wrecked. Main train line closed for repairs for a week. Lieutenant in the lead truck did not get promoted and the truck driver got fined.
