Nice! One of my best friends lives in Mt. P about ten minutes away, and is a member of the museum. Also, is the Clagamore still there, or is she gone now? Also, have they finished the engine room restoration now on the Laffey?
So when are you coming up to the North Carolina? They just reopened this week.
Indeed she is there, and I chased the kids through her bow to stern. She is perfect on the inside, and I am always amazed how the crew manage to get along in such cramped quarters. 18 guys living in the aft torpedo room got me wondering about the sleep schedule. Do they triple bunk? A submariner must be young, lean, and not require a full 8 hours in the rack.
Outside, she is in pretty bad repair. There is a fairly large piece of the outer hull missing aft port side. Some new deck planks (or whatever they are called) lay stacked like they might have been part of a repair project. But there is so much rust, it appears like an impossible project.
The Laffey is what I wanted to see most, but after the Yorktown and Clagamore, the kids were completely out of gas. So, I’ll save her for another trip. There was a sign proclaiming that the CIC was complete.
Man, I thought that south of Myrtle would be unscathed, but north of Georgetown there were still sections of 17 that had one lane blocked with sandbags.
SBA for today, APA tomorrow. Was hoping for some better views but lots of low clouds on the route today. A legit ILS to mins at Liberal, KS on our fuel stop too…
Visited Arkansas for the first time and, compliments of my brother in law, got to see a Razorbacks game.
They got slammed by the #1 ranked team in the country, but it was a great time!
