A few recent shots…
A nice freeware Lanc, found on the org…
Queenstown NZ
I probably shouldn’t be buying older aircraft from the org store right now because the Black Friday sale is not too far away… but I am still looking for the right airplane to use for the Christmas flight.
So, another candidate. The Khamsin DHC-1 Chipmunk.
The cockpit is delightful with really nice instrumentation.
Well worth the asking price I think…
Oh well… I was lucky enough to make my tailwheel differences in this one few years back.
The screens bring back memories
I got the plane for P3D. The FM is a bit off but it is fun to fly nevertheless!
we’ve just got a slingsby s67 at my flying club and we are looking at getting a chippy as well. I’m very keen in buying a share in the chippy as they rock.
Back in the late 90’s I had an opportunity to get checked out in a Chipmunk, but it was going to be more expensive than sticking with the club’s C152’s. I wasn’t earning a lot back then, and so I decided I couldn’t afford it. 20 years later, I regret that decision every time I see a photo of one.
As for the flight model, never having flown the real aircraft, I can just say it feels believable enough, and that is good enough for me. It handles nicely, and behaves well on the ground for a tail dragger.
Maybe you can take me up in it one day!
I had about half a dozen hours in a Chipmunk as a cadet in my teens. I took away three things from those lessons:
That is just incentive to become the pilot one day
Testing out Forkboy’s HD Grand Canyon ortho scenery to make sure it is properly installed for my next leg in the Christmas trek…
Almost brings a tear to my eye…
That must be the best virtual GC scenery ever…!
Pretty amazing, and for free too. Forkboy should get some kind of medal…
Also, stunning in VR if you fly something relatively slow. It’s a little bit jumpy if you are flying at high speed. I do have my settings turned up though.
My first Black Friday aquistition from X-Plane.org…
I had to do some tweaking in Plane Maker because she doesn’t want to unstick from the runway on takeoff. I reduced the empty weight by 20000Lbs which helped considerably, as did the use of extra flap.
I also did the following mod to make her shine a bit…
So, be prepared to have to do a little bit of work if you want to fly it in XP11. She looks great though
After actually reading the manual for the B29, it turns out you take off with a lot of flap (25°) and you just ease it off the runway. So, back into Plane Maker I went and reset the empty weight to what it should be. With 25° of flap she does indeed fly off the runway.
I also went back to the org store and picked up another airplane that I have been thinking about for awhile… the DHC-4 Caribou. It is by X-Hangar, and so I wasn’t expecting anything marvelous, but overall it isn’t bad for $16.
You can stop this thing on a dime…
So I went on a wee bit of a buying spree with the ORBX Thanksgiving Sale. I picked up Northern California to round out my Oregon/Washington scenery and also some of the individual ORBX airports up in the Pacific Northwest that I had for P3D and wanted for X-Plane. Yeah, yeah…I know…a new sim is coming down the pipe…but I’m pretty happy with X-Plane these days…
These are the titles I picked up - Quatam River due to @smokinhole’s endorsement - I can’t wait to explore it!
Quatam River is awesome.
I just discovered that the OrbX sale is still on…
So, I picked up London City, Orcas Island and Swanson.
When I tested out Orcas Island, it looked like a winter wonderland. This is thanks to X-Envro’s seasonal adjustment filter (for want of a better description)… It’s actually pretty neat.
The feature has a slider that allows you to adjust how strong the effect is.

That is VERY cool!
Yeah, that’s beautiful.
One of the fun things about writing for the magazine is the research involved…and often it leads to turning over of many, many stones that lead down further rabbit holes. Anyway…this month I’m writing about Nuuk, Greenland (BGGH) and was looking for some information on whether any jet aircraft have landed there. The first hit I found…didn’t end so well for the unfortunate owner/delivery pilot. Loss of brake pressure on one pedal. A delivery flight for a Cirrus Vision to Europe…
