After buying the Pocket Rocket not too long ago, I learned that the real aircraft is based at Locher Airfield in Italy, and there is some pretty neat freeware scenery for it. You can even open the main hangar doors, which is very cool.
Now, the only complaint I have is tree placement on the Ortho tile once you get beyond the airport scenery. I guess OrbX spoiled me somewhat with TrueEarth scenery.
As the Courchevel was in the works I downloaded few weeks ago ortho tiles just to check it out. There is also nice small airport to the West called Meribel LFKX. I think it didnt make it into the orbx Courchevel scenery.
Nice! I’m trying to get some Ortho to work alongside the OrbX scenery but it isn’t playing ball for me. I swear I spend more time tweaking than actually flying. Lol.
Quick question, did you manage to get the OrbX scenery for Courchevel to play nicely with your ortho? I have been playing with the order of the entries in the scenery_packs.ini file but I either get the OrbX scenery with no ortho, Ortho with no buildings or runway surfaces, or Ortho with the buildings etc present but the elevations are all messed up. I should add that I am a total newbie when it comes to generating ortho tiles.
I have just ortho, didnt buy orbx scenery yet. Maybe in a sale… I dont see it worth the price yet.
Maybe I am just cheap but the coverage area is quite small I would say and also it seems to me that the runway profile is quite off. Especially the bottom part where the slope changes I would say… ( ortho is not better but at least free )
Orthos look great from altitude but bad down low. Pixelated highways under autogen roads, stamped tree- and building-shadows and image flatness scream at me when I am on the deck. The non-urban features that are found in commercial products like Bella Coola, Eiger Park and ORBX can be amazing. I just think X-Plane is tauntingly close to being so good with the current combo of mesh, maps and autogen that photos from the heavens will no longer have much to add.
I would say that it also depends on the resolution aka zoom level ( ZL ) of the orthos. I guess what @Navynuke99 has there is ZL16 what is good compromise between size and height you have to fly so you dont see the pixels.
If one is not limited with time ( to build it ) and size ( to store it ) then one can go e.g. up to ZL19 what is not bad imo ( new MS FS is supposed to have ZL19 ).
Of course it needs to be paired with good overlays. Like the X-Europe 2.1 OSM overlays.
Sure ZL will not solve problems with the mentioned shadows, mesh, colors, etc.
Good cal! I’m still working through the rest of the scenery dance that @fearlessfrog wrote up a little while back. Baby steps. Plus, I only have another ~800 GB to play with right now.
This free package is lovely too! Somebody put a lot of work into getting the runway right, and as a bonus, the entire tile is winter-themed snowy.
I flew it a lot after I stayed in Courchevel for a winter retreat this spring. I miss that place.
It doesn’t in the sim? It should have an ILS to 35 even though it is to the temporary runway while the bigger one is being constructed. It also has two RNAV approaches to 17 and 35…
I’m using the freeware KAVL scenery for it, and I’m not sure if everything is implemented yet, or even if I have the most up to date version:
I don’t think there are PAPI lights, or if they were but the size is off (saw a couple of tiny lights that may have been or may have just been runway markers), and I didn’t pick up the ILS channel on Nav. I flew the approach from VOR Sugarloaf into 35 via GPS (still learning all the finer points of IFR stuff, and I know what some of the acronyms you were using mean ).
