I couldn’t hold out any longer. And though I’m on the fence over whether I should have bought anything at all for X-Plane…I just love the sim and this aircraft in particular. So why not…

Oh man, I tried to do a flight in XP11 yesterday for the xmas trek.

XP11 was installed but not much else. Downloaded the 737 and CIVA, that was quick enough. Fired up. Got the CIVA to work and to show on the panel after a bit of fiddling.

Could not get the cockpit views to work with TrackIR - none of the standard manipulations worked. Realised I needed X-camera installed. Get X-camera. Camera manipulation now works but there appears to be no standard views loaded. TrackIR fights against X-camera and results in the zoom ā€œshakingā€. Google the issue, disable XP11 TrackIR, enable X-camera TrackIR, problem solved.

Now I ā€œjustā€ need to read up on X-camera manual what the quickest way to get the various instrument panel views loaded is and do it and I can do my flight. In addition, the site I bought ActiveSky from has evidently stopped existing so I had to contact HiFi Studios to get my licence number to get it to work, so did that…

I ran out of time and had to make dinner. Did a quick flight in MSFS later.

I know I’m not being fair - XP11 is okay once it has been set up, which I hadn’t done, so I shouldn’t have had my hopes up on getting an actual flight done on the day. But still, from an end user standpoint, having to get a third party app for something as basic as TrackIR to get basic functionality…MSFS has it working out of the box, as does DCS…XP11 should really be able to do the same.

I really want to love XP11 and I know the flight modelling is superior etc…but it’s not easy when you can literally fire up your PC, start up MSFS out of the box and be done with a nice flight in an hour.

A pointless rant, I know…sorry. Had to get it out of my chest.

the thing is you cant fly 737-200 in MSFS right now, but guess it will get sorted at some point

I use EDTracker, its only 3DoF (pseudo 6DoF) but it works flawlessly where TrackIR has its issues from time to time in any sim it seems

@NEVO that’s true - and I have to say, once I did get over the initial hurdles, I had a great time in XP today. The X-camera views took a bit of setting up but using the 737 is very pleasant now.

One thing that actually made a positive difference to the experience was that XP loads quicker than MSFS.

It used to be infuriatingly slow on my old PC but the new SSD seems to load very quickly…so if it crashes (like it did when I accidentally tried to insert too high a number on the CIVA INS), it isn’t as big a deal as it used to be for me.

The flight model feels really good and there’s something about the feel of it that’s more nuanced than MSFS somehow, if I’m not imagining it.

I’m trying to give a few modules which I’ve bought but not flown at least a quick workout as part of this year’s trek…the 737-200, the 407 and 412 helos and the King Air, all of which get fantastic reviews.

Are you sure? I just checked the website and it’s not showing an update since 2019. (Talking the AW139) As an aside I was temporarily banned last year from the ā€œdot.orgā€ forum for just saying ā€œā€¦isn’t x-rotors also working on an AW109?ā€ For some reason that guy is not at all loved over there.

This

I know that better, both, but I’m far away from rich, and I know that soon or later i will finished to have both. But now, which one i should get first and why?
(I prefer, systems modeled and flight model, because about design of the real heli i like both in equal way)

Thanks

I don’t have the UH-1. But if you already have the 412, you already have a Huey. If you don’t already have the 412, I recommend that before either of the two above. I DO have the 222B and enjoy it. The cockpit detail is decent but very clean. Meaning it lacks much sign of wear and therefore the appearance of detail. But it does fly like one would imagine a big 2-blade teetering rotor would. It’s a great instrument platform even without SAS. And Cowan added a very real-looking rain feature to the windscreen and windows.

Yeah, i already have the 412, so i will get the 222B first.
Thank You!!!

I’m just getting started with the 412 and it looks like a very well made module. The 407 is fun, but the 412 module looks very comprehensive indeed.

You fly helos in XP11 quite a bit, don’t you? Add-ons-wise, have you focused on a particular area to perfect the scenery for low level helo stuff? I’ve got the Orbx Washington state but haven’t got any airport or helipad add-ons loaded.

good choice

sure, I am using ortho4xp for the area I am flying in. similarly one can use orbx offerings but these are few and far between and if your preferred area is somewhere else then ortho4xp to the rescue

plus I bought this addon, its perfect imo. there is also Vol.2 for North America. hopefully they will produce similar addons also for the rest of the world

and again, the last missing piece in XP is grass and bushes  I mean custom scenery devs can place some grass and bushes in their creations like the HeliAlpes mentioned by @stavka
…
and in fact it is not that complicated to customize any airport in XP (via their own WorldEditor) with grass and bushes the way that you copy the existing airport and just add the grass and bushes there (…add helipads etc.), save it and then place the package into your custom scenery folder. I customized this way Casco Cove airport our destination for one of our XMas flights.

here the results (ortho4xp and WorldEditor) from Casco Cove

Which reminds me, @stavka the free 429 pictured above is also terrific.

ouch, not good start at all

Unfortunately, I can’t recommend the X-Rotors AW109 in its current form [AW109 1.0].

Wow thats a shame. I was always keeping an eye on the 139 hoping it would get finished.

While I think of it I’ve seen very little in the way of updates on on MD11 lately
