Attention helo and bush/helo pilots…! This one looks pretty fun…41 custom fictional Montana helicopter locations (freeware):
That is very cool. Thanks as always for the heads-up. Are the 23 listed “required libraries” actual separate downloads on the part of the user or… were the listed libraries just required by the designer to build the package and now included in it?
Usually those libraries are separate and not included in the scenery package. I think the scenery “calls” the objects from the scenery library. There used to be a universal library updater that was available on the .ORG that would keep all those libraries up to date, but I haven’t had to use it lately, so I can’t remember the link to it. I’ll try to find it though…! Once you have the libraries, they just sort of sit there in your CUSTOM SCENERY directory like a bunch of ingredients. It would be really cool if there was just a mega-pack of them.
I think this post has most of the most common libraries:
Right. That’s what openscenery.org was supposed to be I guess. But the creators are far outpacing the archivers. Anyway, I believe it is possible to keep everything inside the uploaded package. But in order to do that the creator feels an obligation to get permissions from everyone whose content was used. The advantage to doing it that way, in addition to the lower workload for the end-user, is that the date of each scenery item matches that of the overall package. So there are no conflicts or objects that get eliminated post-release. Well that’s my take anyway. To misquote one of the great anthems from Team America, “Free isn’t free…”
An additional point to consider - doing it that way would add significant overhead to each package. You would end up with multiple copies of each library on your drive taking up space, and as some of those libraries run to hundreds of Mb the effect could be considerable.
Yes, I think that is the intent of the libraries - to provide an inventory from which all sceneries can build. But @smokinhole is correct in that you could extract just the specific objects that are in the scenery and include them in the scenery file itself, which would ensure that there are no missing objects. While it would grow the scenery package size a bit, it would prevent those dreaded “scenery won’t load messages”. The problem, as @smokinhole referenced, is that splitting out objects from libraries starts to step on people’s feelings when they aren’t getting credit.
Ultimately, the library solution is very good…but the sheer number is starting to get tough to keep up with. An auto-updater that keeps them all up to date would be an ideal situation.
Anyway. Didn’t intend to distract from the post. The screens @BeachAV8R took were amazing as always. Bell rules!
Just to clarify - those particular screens were taken by the author of the scenery package (I just copied those ones from the file announcement). I’d love to take credit though…
ORBX has released Monument Valley (USMV) for X-Plane. Honestly…it doesn’t look all that impressive to me for that price point, but hoping for some additional releases from ORBX that will make me hit the trigger. Pretty poor product shots on their page too - not a single one really shows a close up of the runway. And the shots they do show make it appear the product is a low-effort attempt. I dunno…not what I was expecting…
I have to agree Chris. I have all the released OrbX North America scenery for XP11 and really like them a lot, but this one really isn’t grabbing me as a must have purchase from what I am seeing on their website…
The OrbX scenery I would really like to see for XP11 is Queenstown.
This isn’t released yet, but one to keep an eye on (Chris, you will be all over this one I think)…
Propstrike Studio’s Quatam River, which is in British Columbia. It looks amazing and will compliment Bella Coola very nicely. Bella Coola is 135nm to the North as the crow flies, and Vancouver is about 100nm to the South.
I learned about this scenery while reading a post about the VSkyLabs Eurofox. There are some nice photos there too.
I just picked up the Eurofox with this scenery in mind, and yes, flying helicopters in this scenery is going to be amazing! Evidently it should release ‘soon’.
That Eurfox is really nice. Fun stick and rudder aircraft and I love the tundra tires… How is it in VR? Seems that it’d be an ideal aircraft for low and slow in VR…
It’s really nice in VR. It is also a lot more controllable than the default Stinson, which I could never keep straight on the runway. For $15 it’s a steal.
Another nice addition, and best of all, it’s free! A really nice gesture on Aerobask’s part.
You know it! Thanks for posting Paul!
They are also offering a freebee called “Machmell Fisheries” but I don’t know how to get it.
I think it is still in the works and will be released soon:
“The scenery is to be released free of charge in order to celebrate the upcoming opening of the PropStrike store, availability is expected this summer. With regards to the location, Machmell Fisheries camp is a small bush airstrip located 40NM south of Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada.”
