XPlane-12

The unexplainable, yup.

That’s why on the military side I like DCS (plus the variety).

With DCS and X-Plane? I dunno, just feels like I’m moving a thing around. No clue how accurate it is. Then put yourself in the craft (VR), add a little physical feedback - woohoo, don’t have enough quarters to feed into it!

I really need to fire up XP12 again. The only reason I installed it on my new PC is the Hot Start Challenger 650 but maybe I should give it another shot with some other aircraft as well. It’s just so hard to give up the visuals we have in MSFS, especially now with the 2024 version.

Yeah…it is fairly unexplainable. I credit the ground/air interaction that I feel X-Plane does really well. I feel like I have to fly the aircraft at all times…which is a good and realistic feeling. I’m sure MSFS has made improvements in those areas in the last two iterations…I just haven’t given MS a chance…

To my great surprise…I had a very easy time of it with utilizing my entire XP11 scenery install with XP12. I used the following instructions to create symbolic links to my X-Plane 11 scenery directory…copy/pasted (mostly) the scenery_packs.ini entries to the new XP12 scenery directory and everything SEEMS to be working correctly. Well…I am seeing SOME airports that aren’t being autopopulated with structures…I think it is an .ini loading order issue that I’ll get figured out.

I first tried all my ORBX scenery…so nice to NOT have to re-download all of that stuff. As far as I can tell anyway…the ORBX app doesn’t even work with most X-Plane 11 sceneries…not sure if they are issuing new ones or what…but the symbolic links worked just fine.

Taking a look at my own ortho that I had made years ago…looks good and functional…relieved that the symbolic links work for that too…

Asheville, NC area…

Outer Banks…

Very much liking the lighting in the cockpits…the reflections…the quality of the image…still haven’t addressed the contrast issue…

I found the tailwheel aircraft feel a bit slippery unless you use a good bit of aft stick when taxiing. I don’t have a ton of tailwheel experience…so I’ll defer to @smokinhole who has a TON of it…but I didn’t think aft stick was necessarily always a requirement when taxiing…

Did have some incidents…ooops…

I think this is ORBX area scenery (maybe Washington State?)…

Taking a look at the Papua area scenery…I like the density of the trees and I think these are XP12 trees perhaps…regardless…looks better than ever…

La Guardia over to Newark…

Pretty solid FPS too…around 45 FPS with these settings. Still haven’t really dived into VR…been doing too much multi-tasking right now…

Anyone know what would cause a lack of dust from the prop on dirt/gravel runways? It was evident in XP11 but I’m not seeing that in XP12…

Wow, Beach, those screens!

Aft stick for taxiing is much like opposite aileron when taxiing with a quartering tailwind. We’re taught to do it so we do it. But will failing to do so have a material effect? Probably not. The two exceptions are when applying power and when landing. The Pitts would be on it’s nose or in the weeds with full power and neutral stick. Also landing, full aft stick when the tail touches, every time.

You mentioned MSFS and ground airflow. They’ve improved a bunch. But then tossed it in the bin for ‘24, at least for helicopters. It’s like the bottom of your helicopter is a positive magnet and any raised platform is negative. Ground effect occurs in full and instantaneously when the CG enters the column. Funny thing is, I remember XP11 had a similar bug when it came out. MS will fix it, but it’s pretty sporting atm.

DUST? Not sure if it’s a selectable option. It definitely is there for me in v12.

I wasn’t sure I’d continue with MSFS after the Christmas Flight - 2020 has weird problems like randomly killing you when it decides you just entered a 150 knot windshear on descent when using real weather, and 2024 is no-go for me on my “best available” australian internet.

But XP12 looks amazing! I am very tempted to give it a go in the new year :+1:

it does look good when you stick lot of custom scenery on it. otherwise there isnt much to see down low.

except when you fly heavy-metal, i.e. IFR, then the detail down low isnt that important.

I am still having problem to take XP12 further than ‘around the chimney’.

but overall its a great app. very easy to start and configure quick flight.

How does XP12 VR performance compare with FS2020 or DCS? I wanted to give civil sims a chance but FS2020 ran like crap on my system.

I found XP12 much smoother than MSFS 2020 in VR on my system. Others had the opposite experience. Honestly, it’s a crap-shoot. MSFS 2024 runs better than 2020 and LOOKS better than anything I’ve ever experienced on any platform. Mine happens to be an XBOX, lower specs than any 2020’s PC.

I’ll be able to give more thoughts on this soon. I’m only just starting to get my feet wet with XP12…

So going down my list of XP11 stuff that I tried in XP12. These were just copy/pastes…so it is kind of understandable that most of it doesn’t work.

Wilson DC-8 - No engine sounds
Hawker 4000 - No engine sounds
Avro RJ 100 - Doesn’t work at all
Zibo 737 - Doesn’t work at all
Boeing 747-400 GE - :white_check_mark:
Boeing 747-SP - :white_check_mark:
Flight Factor 757 - Doesn’t appear to be supported
Challenger 300 - no sound
CRJ 200 - has a trim or CG problem
Danklau ERJ 140 - Doesn’t work at all
Fokker 28 - Works but no landing gear retraction
FlyJSim 727 - No flap or rudder animations
FlyJsim Dash 8 - Initialization error
JustFlight BAe 146 - A mess
LES Saab 340 - No luck
Rotate MD80 - CTD
SSJ - CTD
Felis Tu-154 - No luck
VSkyLabs DC-3 - :white_check_mark:
X-Crafts ERJs - CTD

I’ve only looked at these airliners…and I haven’t done a re-install of them into the XP12 directory…which may help…nor have I looked at the devs websites to see if there are workarounds. I’ll get to it…because I won’t be rebuying these. Just can’t afford it.

Might be some help via X-Updater…

757 should work with an update, Be ware though you will get a pop up when loading the 757 in that says this version is unsupported, click ok and fly on. I have had no issues yet.

The Rotate MD80 is a paid upgrade I believe $25 I think or at least that’s what I paid for it.

The X craft ERJs I paid for but I don’t think I owned them in XP 11,

Dash 8 was a new purchase as I think it was a ground up rebuild.

The Zibo 737 should work but probably requires the latest XP 12 version.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I’ve found about a 50% rate of things that will work from 11 in 12.

Yes! I did get it to work. Also the ERJ Family I was able to find a airport.dat file they listed to get it working…which is great because it is probably my favorite VR airliner… The Skunkcraft updater also updated a couple other planes…so maybe I’m back in business with some of them…

If you directly copy-paste from xp11 to v12 it not works because many have dedicated versions for v12 (some paid, low price, updates).
comments on the aircraft you wrote:
zibo 737, exist a dedicated xp12 version, you can also get the LevelUP737 free for xp12 on Orbx client
FF757, dedicated reinstall
flyjsim 727/737, sincerelly too much over hype around it because its wow a classic boeing, infact in their glory release it was a shame that use default fmc. Also even before public beta of xp12 it was the nr1 that was promissed that was released for xp12 and advertised as full compatible, when xp12 cames out, we saw the true, then the excuses of oooooh is still beta so we not want to do developments on beta xp versions, then after years of other much more complex releases addons for xp12 and the xp12 is in final releases for years, still no more 727 and 737 from flyjsim, so sorry, but i have no more hopes for it and was a full distrust. If you want a vintage awesome boeings? Get the Felis 747 and the IXEG 737 that was fully released for xp12 and are miles away much better done addons than flyjsim boeings.
dash8 exist a (paid) v2 that supports xp12
dc3 even if it works, redownload it because they have dedicated v12 versions, also consider the new LES DC3 for xp12.
Felis Tu154M, one of the reasons i still have installed the xp11…
Md80, exist a paid xp12 version, but i’m a bit pissed with this aircraft that have autoland inop, i know that everything can be inop in an airplane, but this is only a kind of lazy from devs to take some time implement it after they learned how to do with their md11
recommendations:
Get the JF Traffic Global for xp that is now at 50% sale
Toliss Airbuses are a must to have airliners with top quality if you like to use a joystick instead of a yoke hahahaha
rotate md11, yeah that one is a great addon and a must to have vintage airliner for v12
and ofc if you feel a spender, the x-aviation CL-650 is a piece of art!!!
Exist many more recomendations, but my post is already big…

and… Merry Xmas to all of you!!!

Thanks…yes…I’ll have to go through the planes that I want to see in XP12 and redownload them from the source (90% of them are from .ORG) and see which ones maybe have updates.

I didn’t keep up much with X-Plane the past few years, but I guess the plan by Laminar (Austin) is to have a store within the software similar to what MSFS has. That is pretty ambitious…as then you have to deal with all of that stuff…keeping files updating…dealing with customers that are unhappy. I guess depending on what cut of the sales they get maybe it is worth it. I keep reading on social media (Reddit X-Plane subreddit) how everyone is so unhappy with the .ORG but I’ve been very happy with their service over probably more than a decade. You have to be careful and do some research on aircraft functionality and whether the product is even supported. I do think the .ORG should discontinue selling products that are clearly abandonware by their developers.

I had the same experience with the org… no problem at all. You just have to take some personal responsibility to research what you are buying and understand the refund policy (ie no refunds). Unfortunately personal responsibility doesn’t seem to be a thing with a lot of people these days.

ok, so at least some workaround for the xp12 not breathtaking performance

following yt comment sums it up nicely :

Honestly, the fact that you have a 4090, but can’t get these FPS without lossless scaling is ridiculous. I love XP12, I really do, but it’s a shame it’s so poorly optimized.

Would this work for DCS? VR?
