XPlane-12

I have read somewhere (from multiple accounts) that in general orbx scenery for XP11 works in XP12 without any issues, there can be som glitches here and there though.

Hey Chris…You should be able to get OpenXR to run with the tool kit

I have a Pimax HMD so I use a program made for that headset…the VR forums over on DCS are really good for info as well…Good Luck my friend.

MSFS 2024 has had me banging my head against the wall. So back to my old love for a bit. It’s like rewatching The Empire Strikes Back. “Ahh, yeah, now I remember why I loved this so much.” They’ve made some small updates since I was last here. They’ve added boats with, according to Austin, “accurate” location and routing. The sailboat has him at the helm wearing his Tesla jacket. It’s a fun side-game chasing these things around with the R22. They’ve also modeled St. Barts and a few other Caribbean airports but I don’t have any scenery installed for that area so I haven’t checked it out. LR is definitely not throwing in the towel in the face of the MS juggernaut. And the recent MSFS 2024 fiasco might be sending a few people their way. And I am not wishing any ill will to MSFS. 2024 will be incomparably beautiful once they work out the bugs. But it’s nice to have a mixed market out there from which to play.

Of course…as soon as I hit the install button…Dispatch calls and tells me to call our maintenance guy. They replaced the FADEC on one of our planes that failed the other day so they need me to come out and take the Williams engine guy on some high speed taxi tests with it. I hate it when my flying job gets in the way of my virtual flying…

Now downloading all of the default worldwide scenery. Reserved an 8TB drive for my X-Plane 12 install…

I’m thinking that you are not the only one who has experienced this.

FADEC test complete. Was waiting for the brakes to fail after sitting at MCT for 10 minutes. Ready to snatch that throttle back in a second… :eyes:

Sure is purdy! Sucks that you had to drive out there for that. You should’a at least taken around the patch.

Funny thing is…I called my son…went to voicemail…sent him a text: “Hey buddy…if you want to come out to work with me I have to go ground run an engine…we can taxi around and you can see the airport and at least get to watch part of what flying is about…”

Crickets.

He was probably up until 3AM playing Squad with his buddies or something. He is frighteningly like me. Of course…back then I would have positively bolted to see an airplane up close. Things have changed. The competition for young people’s minds is intense…and there is so much literally at their fingertips now. It’s a shame really…so much of the wonder of the world is gone.

Any-way…back on topic…old man paragraph above…I should just delete it.

I’m back home after some last minute Christmas shopping. Gonna start easing some of my XP-11 stuff into XP-12…although I might explore it vanilla for a bit first.

Question - Am I supposed to subscribe to the beta in Steam I assume under the library properties?

Does anyone know what the high detail scenery areas are in default X-Plane? I seem to remember old versions had Seattle and Innsbruck or something…are there similar areas for XP-12? For some reason Google is not returning any results to my question…

I don’t know actually. I started XP12 with Princeton and Blairstown and quickly started Ortho-building out from there.

If you go to the custom scenery folder, those areas should all be there. (drive):\X-Plane 12\Custom Scenery

Just what I was looking for…! Thanks…I knew they had to include some custom high-density stuff. I mean…the default is Portland (KPDX)…so I knew that one was sort of high density (at least the airport)… and I loaded LOWI and it looked high density. Good to know those other ones are too. Just messing around with the vanilla install before I move on.

First impressions…I remember why I love X-Plane so much. The feeling of flying and ground interaction just seems so good. Bear in mind I haven’t really given MSFS2020 or 2024 their fair shake…just saying from a feel perspective… I really love the X-Plane…oh God…I’m…I’m barf…I’m gonna say it…

I have Traffic Global working - per their website you just had to copy/paste two directories from your X-Plane 11 install into your X-Plane 12 install and it appears to be working fine.

I also think I have Active Sky XP working by simply redirecting the target directory of the sim to X-Plane 12 from X-Plane 11. In doing some research on this…I see the company Hi Fly that made Active Sky offered a very brief FREE upgrade period (like 10 days to claim it) last year…if you didn’t lay your claim you have to now pay full price for the XP12 version. I’m not butt-hurt about having to pay again so much as that they purposely did not notify their users via e-mail…but instead just put up a banner on their website and in the program itself indicating the promo would only be 10 days long. Most of us take breaks from sims and almost none of us often visit 3rd party websites for products we own. To not have sent out a mass e-mail to their registered users seems kind of shady. At the very least, it would be nice to get a % off coupon for upgrading…but if the XP11 version works in XP12 (I haven’t read what is different)…I may end up sticking with it…I don’t know…

First off - thanks to @smokinhole for nudging me to take a look at XP12 last week. A subtle “hey…why aren’t you using XP12…?” question made me wonder what answer I had for that…and I didn’t have one other than that I was so far removed from the launch of it…and it was at a time in my life where I wasn’t finding much enthusiasm for anything. So…I’m grateful he asked the question because I’m finding I am really loving the look of XP12.

Now…these screens are from the Innsbruck area…so aren’t really representative of the wider X-Plane scenery (default) because they are higher detail…but they look great. Something definitely looks better in the XP12 atmospheric light scattering and overall colors…it definitely feels more vibrant…but not cartoonishly so.

The Cub is really cool…love the tundra tires…and the flight model feels great…

The lighting engine DOES look great in the cockpit…although like I mentioned before there are some contrast issues that I think I can fix with some plug-ins probably…

I’m flying in 2D right now just while I initially get the sim up to where I want with regards to add-ons. I always loved the default MD-82…one of my favorite airliners in real life…

Took the C-90 up…it has a nice enough cockpit…feathered an engine and brought it around…fun stuff…

I’m running an i9-9900k processor and a 2080Ti…so I can’t max everything out. When I did…I was getting around 19-ish FPS. Dialing the sliders back a notch or so had me settled at around 40-50 FPS. I’ll probably have to make some changes in VR when I switch to that…

So far I’m loving it. As always…kind of having fun tweaking and adding and rediscovering things… Like an old friend. Thanks @smokinhole
