Zen3 or not zen3, that is the question

I’m happy w/ my 2700X TBH, night and day difference from FX8350 @ 5.31 GHz vs 2700X at even stock clocks.

But I skipped the wait for 3700X and missed out on some little things, but I can go for a Zen 3 / 5xxxx, Flash my Mobo, and get everything I lost.

My Mainboard was a premium X300 Series, a few flashes and I get everything I need out of the Zen3 chip and the same features of the X400 Series of the same model,

X370 and X470 are pretty much the same (Just BIOS Fixes for memory stability),

X570 Introduced PCIe Gen 4, which I doubt a Single rDNA2 Card would saturate a X370/470 PCIe Gen2, granted w/ a 500 Series it would use less lanes, but one GPU isnt going to take up all my processors lanes and I dont run a bunch of PCIe Addon cards to even need to worry about it.

So Dropping in a Zen 3, I get the estimated 25-35% IPC and Power Improvements over Zen+ (2xxx series), and memory bus improvements, at only the cost of the processor, which will also have 4 more physical cores and 8 more threads, as well as using less power and putting out less heat.

So it’s a win win, then I can keep my 2700X as a back up or build a zen rig as a backup or for my brother (who’s still running his FX8350 at 4.8GHz that I built for him about 6 yrs ago).

Ciao @SkateZilla i’m in your same situation!
2700x and waiting to push the button…

i’m tempted to buy it as soon as it’s announced… Will you wait some more for safety? Do you fear first batches of cpu at risk?

Erm, atoms don’t degrade (well there are hypotheses about protons decaying, but we’re still not certain if that’s true and if it is, we haven’t observed it because gee Sally it happens very, very seldom). Chemical bonds can change, but unless you are running a nuclear reactor in your computer, the atoms just hang around. Some of them are promiscuous little shites that like to go out and mingle with Atoms of all different types, but they themselves stay the same.

Removed some off topic nonsense.
You guys behave now.

I am always thinking that a year or two behind the lastest is the way to go. I am not looking on the cutting edge. What do I need to play this sim? That is the question I ask myself. That said, you are in a really good position for a wait. The 3 series cards are both cheap and state of the art. I cant comment on AMD cos I dont use it. So I will not. YES, get all the other components like RAM ect. Get a great mobo and get to gaming bro. No more excuses.

You’re supposed to flag the offending post, not dig in and take the bait.

There.
I brought the post back.

Now, I can’t see what degrading atoms have to do with this topic, but ok.

I just snipped the thread where I saw it going off topic. Nothing sinister or personal. Just trying to keep this forum orderly.

Edit. Just for clarification. Off topic is fine, but when feathers are being ruffled, moderation is needed. It isn’t always possible to be 100% accurate as moderators have lives too and things that must be done.
I’m sorry if this felt like I was going for you personally, even if three posters were moderated. But this is nothing to get worked up about.

I think the issue that hits older PC (and electronics in general) is more often corrosion than anything else.
The ability of the electrons to traverse the pathways in the same manner as when it was new gets hindered more and more as metal oxidizes or otherwise deteriorates.

While I’m sure there is some sub-molecular stuff going on, the timescale you would measure that on would apply to a PC found from centuries ago, if someone invented a time machine and dropped a PC in the past to then be rediscovered today that is. I think even a decade won’t significantly alter that, but corrosion/oxidation certainly is a thing on that timescale.

As long as no overcurrents are involved, aging occurs mostly in the electrolyte of capacitors. Solder joints can age as well, but that’s mostly a non issue in the machine/reflow soldered pcbs in a PC.

Silicon ages.

I know, but much slower.

So Nov 5th is release for Ryzen 9 5950X (16C/32T), Ryzen 7 5800X (8C/16T) and Ryzen 5 5600X (6C/12T). I would have hoped for a Ryzen 7 5700X @65Watts as well but it seems that is to come later if at all. So I think I’m going to opt for the 3700X instead of going with a 5600X.

@sobek

I like watching Jayz2cents anyway but this was a most informative video. I can imagine it will make a significant difference in performance for DCS with its core limitations. It will be interesting to know what you make of the news.
Strange it’s not embedded for some reason

@Cib, there was a space in front of the link. Fixed it.

wonder when we’ll start seeing the first reviews!

mainly interested in the best ram for this beats!!

I’m so stoked I have a great upgrade path to the 5000 series with my current X570 mobo.

This has be seriously considering an upgrade. Very, very temping.

What you got right now @Fridge?

I’m so jealous! I need to upgrade as well but I’ve had to choose between a trailer and a pc…trailer wins unfortunately for now

I would swap the Arctic cooling paste for kryonaught and would always prefer a custom loop over an AIO purely from a future proof. An all in one cooler has lots of things that can go wrong and can’t be replaced, if the pump goes then it’s the cost of a new AIO but a custom loop will circumvent that issue. Good luck with purchase and build and I hope the stock is available for you. Post pics of the build as it progresses
