Zen3 or not zen3, that is the question

Probably the 5600X.

The most expensive one never is, that’s always a maxim.

The 5600X seems to have quite a lot of single core performance while being a lot cheaper due to requiring only one chiplet, and the additional cores of a 5800X or above i can’t imagine to translate to a lot of gaming performance currently.

With the 5600x the budget for GPUs just got a little higher.

My MFS is always limited by GPU. On a 3800x and rtx 2080.

5800x on backorder!
let’s see how many days/weeks/months for the delivery!

Still tempted to change order and save some money by getting the 5600x (but all the apps open in background for comms, joystick, bass shaker and streaming want me to keep two more cores for safety)

and still tempted to waste some money for 4 more cores and yeah a bigger number!

On a techical level it’s a difficult choice! I would like to pick the best one for DCS (probably just few fps difference)

All 4 cpu are very close to each other having gains and lows depending on the games…

5950/5900 have higher single core mhz, but at the same time all core clock is lower. All core OC tops at 4.7ghz

5800/5600 have lower single core mhz but can reach a 4.8ghz OC

on top of this is the core disposition, single core complex for 5600/5800 two in the R9s. Can more core complexes give an advantage or add latency when communicating to each other?

mmm readying too much reviews

shame on ya’ll for ever doubting Jim Keller… :stuck_out_tongue:

I have always been dedicated to the CPU that gives the best FPS results in flightsims. That’s usually the one with the best single core performance and again usually an Intel CPU. But that seems to have changed. Right in time for my next upgrade, early next year. I will let you lead me into temptation first though

Keller Worked with AMD before Intel.

I don’t understand comparing these CPUs at 720p. No one is buying this cpu to run games at 720p. What a pointless comparison.

Well it would take away much of the GPU load, so you can look at how single core performance may affect DCS however like you say, the low resolution also invalidates it.

At proper resolutions is the gap still as wide? That’s what matters.

Unless they are comparing CPU loads and trying to minimize the impact of a GPU. So, yeah, it’s a limited test and needs more context. And it’s also a limited test that isn’t a ‘real world’ use case.

Why does the intel rig GPU go to 0% all the time?

is the cpu not elaborating fast enough the frames to render the 300 B17 (he said using in this test mission) and the gpu is idling waiting for the frames?

i’ve asked him in comments if he can make a high res alternative showing low 1% wich should be also super interesting!

720P 1440P 2160P wont matter, your comparing CPU performance.

DCS with high object counts and AI scripting brings cores to their knees.

GPU dips to 0% when its waiting for work.

idealy you want 100% cpu usage all the time keep the gpu fed and working, once the cpu gets bogged down, it feeds less dx11 commands to the gpu, utilization and fps drop lole a rock.

FTFY

some aspects of DCS are multi-threaded, as is DX11 according to MS…

Buy the cheaper model if you want stock.

It’s the same chip(let), and only the ones that are 100% functional can fulfill the spec sheet of the top models.
All the other chips (and that’s a lot more) are sold as 5600X or 6800.

I’m fairly confident there will be a LOT more 6800 stock than 6900XT, just like we saw with the CPUs.

I will probably buy a 6800 just because I want it before my early december vacation. Though I know 6800XT will be better bang for buck, and the performance boost will be very useful in DCS VR.
