Yeah. Undoubtedly. If I were a single engine operator in real life…there is no way I’d fly without a backup ADI…or (even better so I’ve heard) - an independent AHARS such as that you can get through Foreflite/Stratus:

man this dude flies like a grandma… slowest flight ever. He’s spent longer doing 3/4 the distance of my previous flight than I did for the whole thing, with routing around the airport via atc … good grief

I guess that letter is still on it’s way to me. When I was laid off from my King Air job back in '09 I interviewed at a place in Columbus OH that was looking for pilots for a Citation II (I was typed) and a Citation III. Sounded promising but something seemed ‘off’ when I was there. They were laying it on really thick… how I would be typed in the III really quickly, well paid etc etc. It was like they were selling themselves rather than me having to impress them…and all their pilots seemed really young except for the owner/chief pilot…
At the end of the interview I just didn’t get a good vibe, even though they seemed very enthusiastic about getting me onboard with them. It turned out that they were operating charter flights under the guise of Part 91K, but most of the flights were not for the aircraft owners. The type ratings were all done in house (I’m not sure who they had as a check airman)… All very fishy. I’m glad I walked away from that one.
My first corporate outfit, well after I left, got taken down for being an imitation 91K. What is somewhat interesting is that it was another shady outfit that ratted them out. This aviation business is a relatively small world…so I have a growing list of people I won’t work for.
It amazes me that there are still operations like that out there. They must realize that eventually the Feds will start asking questions.
I’ve set everyone’s permissions to “Can Withdraw Fund” - can anyone confirm that only means funds from their earned funds or can anyone completely drain the VA account into their personal account?

I don’t mind if people do - I trust everyone in the VA…but I can imagine a scenario where an Air Hauler pirate comes in and wipes us out…
Zachary Hull may not have had the full skills he advertised (lying in an interview even in the virtual world… Who knew), but he’s steadily piloting my 172 around KPUW environs pulling in some cash. He spends way more than I would (he spent more on fuel for one flight than I have for four… Reserves, phaw) but that’s ok! Better a bit of cash than no cash coming in!
A minor derailment to be sure but…well, that’s what I do…anyway…
I have always wondered about the backup ADI or artificial horizon and other backup gauges such as altimeter and airspeed indicator, and the whiskey compass. I understand why they are there but never really had an idea about how much they actually get used, i.e. the primary instruments go Tango Uniform.
I suspect that there are times when the pilot should/must check the primary gauges against the back ups…the gyro compass drifts so needs to be reset (I’ve had a couple of FSX mods that simulated that)…and probably there are other reasons. But beyond that?
On the handful of flights - commercial and military - in small aircraft where I could actually see the instrument panel, I know the primary systems worked fine. I guess I’m asking how frequently (in RL) do the primary gages conk out?
Depends on how well your equipment is maintained and what your definition of frequent is. IMO, not often, but almost every pilot I know has had at least one type of instrument failure, whether it be the instrument itself or the system that supplies power or data. Blocked static ports, vacuum pump failure, and electrical problems are all part of the deal. Of course @BeachAV8R likes to have the whole experience by lighting his PT6 on fire
Frequently enough. For instance, I had a left side MFD failure a few months back:
Compositing that to the center MFD worked and the Air Data Computers (ADCs) were both still actually sending the correct data. But anytime you have a failure of the left/right or backup instruments, you obviously need two to eliminate the “bad” one…unless you happen to be very unlucky and get two bad instruments simultaneously showing the same bad data.
My biggest fear is a lightning strike leading to the total loss of electrical power in the airplane. We don’t have a RAT, we don’t have an APU. All we have is a backup ADI/HSI powered by an emergency power pack that should theoretically work for about 30 minutes. All fine and good except when you are an hour or two from land (Bermuda for us).
Over the past 20+ years I’ve had probably a dozen or more partial or complete ADI/HSI failures where we’ve had to enter a reversionary mode (taking data from another source). It happens. Electrons or something.
