I don’t like how ‘woke’ some of the characters are and that they look like they belong in R6 Siege, but I guess once you’re playing it doesn’t matter.
Without wanting to open up a can of worms I do understand your point.
I prefer to not see this ‘woke’ stuff being so obnoxiously present in my (shooter) games. Characters are just puppets to me personally. I don’t identify with them having any ‘personality’ and I couldn’t care less what their gender preferences are. They are just a puppet where the camera gets attached to enabling me to have a little more immersion when looking down seeing a pair of legs and feet.
An adventure game where the gender topic specifically is a theme is another case entirely.
Its all about the vessel to communicate certain views / expressions / statements. IMO a shooter is not a very suitable vessel for woke stuff.
To be clear once again: I am not trying to stir up something here. If you don’t agree with me, fine. You’re entitled to your opinions, just as I am to mine. Let’s be civil and non polarizing about it please.
Lets be honest about the BF2042 elephant in the room: pushing the climate change agenda.
But it’s just a game.
This sounds like a very odd version of battlefield… I haven’t really played since 4
It used to be a slightly more realistic version of COD with vehicles and a pretty simplified version of ARMA.
It kind of sounds like it’s gone the way of everything else now with “operators” dressed like Christmas trees and pink guns etc. It’s not my thing to be honest.
Exactly!
Not quite but I fear it may go down that route if they can sell ‘outfits’ for them…
Im not knocking the people that do enjoy all that stuff, each to his own and all that but it’s just not my sort of thing.
I totally get why pushing politics in a game can be a downer. But as a counter, I remember playing through a version of either CoD or BF years ago. (Semi-modern with grunts in Latin America IIRC). The dialog among troops may well have been realistic but I found it overly-douchy. Lot’s of “Git’some!” and similar killer banter. The pendulum swings. Having said that, I haven’t played since the incredible BF1. So I am hardly the target audience.
Mine neither
Last year, when Activision released the original trailer for CoD: Black Ops Cold War, it included footage from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. Well, that upset China so it was removed.
Nonetheless, the trailer is based on an interview with real life KGB informant Yuri Bezmenov (video mark 1:07:12, fascinating to listen to) which sparked PLENTY of red pill discussion…
Yeah, China runs the show now…
NVIDIA released the “day-0” drivers (496.76) today …
Very welcome in my case since I was getting a crash related to drivers since the REAL day-0 on November 12th.
The traditional post-release Nvidia hot-fix.

LOL! And here I thought my source was leading edge!
Thanks bud.
You’re so right. I HATE all the “characters” … well, maybe not the old Russian guy. Good thing is you can’t really see their faces while you’re trying to shoot them in the head.
I much prefer picking from a set of rough and tough looking warfighters instead of a bunch of pansies who wouldn’t survive a second in this environment LOL!
Anyway, I’m an old guy (55) who isn’t concerned with his K/D ratio anymore. I’m learning how to get back into mouse and keyboard fps’ and I’m having fun! It’s dragging me away from my VR shooters though! You know, the ones where you ACTUALLY have to shoot and transition between real virtual guns LOL! Why am I doing this anyway? (answer: really good graphics)
This is the first Battlefield I’m going to skip, I think. I’m not a big fan of the replacement of the class system with “specialists” a la Call of Duty Warzone.
Battlefield Portal looks really tempting though. The footage I saw of the Bf1942 maps (El Alamein and Ardennes) look exactly like what I desperately wanted Battlefield V to be instead of… whatever DICE delievered for that game. But… for just two maps I want to play, I don’t think it’s worth full price.
Whats the problem with these specialists that people seem to have?
The single thing that is different from a game mechanics standpoint is that each specialist has a specific skill to differentiate them from eachother.
Are these skills the problem?
The class system has not been replaced by specialists. The class system has been replaced by an open ended system where everyone can choose they weapons and gear regardless of specialist chosen.
Which gives more options to the player at any rate.
The only thing they should improve on is the UI to indicate which loadouts your squadmates have chosen.
As it stands atm its hard to coordinate squad skills and gear with randoms in your squad. But thats more a UI thing than a specialist thing.
Sure, they look similar with 50 people running as Rao, but it was no different with previous games. The difference only being that you id someone’s class by its soldier model.
To me, the specialists and their versatile nature are a problem. On one hand, it does give the player more flexibility. On paper, more choice is always better, right? Well… what if you played chess and different pieces were not restricted to specific movements? Bishops, knights, queens… they’d all be equally as viable as a single pawn in most situations.
Battlefield’s appeal always was that gameplay restrictions/rules forced players to be complementary to each other. Fighting as an engineer wasn’t the same as fighting as a medic, and you had to keep in mind what you could and what you couldn’t do. The concept of a team being greater than the sum of its parts is what made Battlefield special. The nature of it meant that a squad of four Assault players would often perform worse than a well-rounded squad of engineer/recon/medic/assault. From a quick glance at your squadmates’ classes, you could easily see what their roles were expected to be. With specialists, there is no way to figure out who is supposed to do what… or at least what set of “rules” they play with.
I understand specialists have skills that give them a specific “role”, but in my opinion it will dilute the experience, making it too similar/uniform across the board. Invariably, the flexibility of the specialist system will make players converge towards “optimal” loadouts to maximize kill/death ratios… which will eventually have the side effect of having a majority of players play the same way with the same setup, which defies the very purpose of the class system of the Ye Olde Battlefield.
Fair enough. I do share your concerns about the ‘meta’. It will definitely result in some specialists being ignored while others being omnipresent. The one with the squirrelsuit is a good example.
Still, for me the issue of not being able to gauge who wears what is an UI issue more than a specialist one. Ultimately I don’t feel specialist choice has a very large impact on the flow of the game.
Look like there will be a small patch Thursday night/Friday morning before the ‘official’ launch on Friday. Then 2 larger patches some time after that.
Now that the opening early access days are behind us, I’m really enjoying this game. Lots of over-the-top movie-like moments that have me smiling and laughing.
