You know, thatā€™s something thatā€™s always bothered me about Top Gun.

We know that Duke Mitchell flew F-4ā€™s (even though they never couldā€™ve operated from the Oriskany, as Essex - class CVā€™s were too small to operate them). So he was wounded and saved three more planes, but what about his own RIO? Especially since the battle occurred ā€œover the wrong lines on some map,ā€ was he just stuck and SOL after Duke bought it? Are we going to see the son or grandson of that screwed over RIO as the villain in Top Gun 2?

Correct, in fact the AIM-4 was just used on the F-4D for a rather short time.

Also if I recall, an AIM-4 was used unsuccessfully in the same attack where the F-4E scored the first supersonic gun kill.

So correct me if itā€™s not possible, but since the Air Force Echos retain their arrestor hooks, canā€™t we put a Navy skin on them and land them on carriers like they were Juliets?
