We discussed the changes with @BeachAV8R first initially and he’s all good with them. He wouldn’t be doing the tech work for them even if he was about.
As for the reasons for his absence; it’s more a question of the respect we have for him here that when, and if, he wants to explain then he can do that himself at a time he thinks best. I think that’s all any of us will say about it and I hope people understand.
(Well that went south in a hurry.) Thanks guys for the monumental effort you’ve put into this site to trim the fat and keep in good health for years to come. I know that it’s going to look and feel a bit weird for the next few days as you finish the job. Can I also humbly request from the finished product that you keep the user “workflow” as close to the original as possible? Here, right now, on my desktop, it works great. But on my phone I am now lost. It’s a bit like Discord. Each new day that I open it, I do so with a tinge of fear about what new confounding thing is going to pop up that my dusty brain will have to figure out a workaround for.
It might be something broken. What does it look like on the phone, can you screen cap for a quick peek?
It should look the same apart from the menu now on the top left. On a narrow phone I think that can be hidden with a swipe left.
We try to turn off any new things, but we need to update to get the most recent security updates, so it’s sometimes tough. This is the first major update (they are at v3 now) since May 18.
Fearless, thanks again to you and the rest of the tech “team” for accepting the mission, and then executing it with as much forethought, precision, and flexibility as possible. The Spike lives on and undoubtedly thrives.
So this is me typing. It’s ok (I guess?) at first but as I get deeper into the post I am nolanfer able tosee whsy i am writing. Its sorta a mess. Phew!
When I say “workflow” I am talking about how I, Eric, use Mudspike which is probably unique to me. But I use it as a forum. I have read some terrific articles here. And I have, in turn, written some fairly awful ones. But when I type “Mudspike” on my phone I have zero interest in that stuff. I just want to click the “latest” button and see what I’ve missed. Getting to that point on my phone is still a bit of a mystery to me. I manage but I am still not sure how I got there.
I’m late to the party, but thanks for all that you guys are doing to keep the lights on and the Spike alive! I appreciate it a bunch, and would sure miss it if this place turned the lights out. It’s an awesome, amazing community that’s been built here. I hope it stays that way forever!
I have the same thought, I miss my ‘unread’ button. That’s about all I normally do (did?) it click on unread and work my way through any posts since the last time I visited, regardless of section or topic. I’m sure there’s still a (probably better?) way to do that now, but I haven’t got it quite figured out yet. Not complaining by any means, just saying you’re not alone @smokinhole!
I do basically what you’re describing. If you hit the “categories” box underneath the “Mudspike Forums” banner, it’ll give you a drop down with “latest” as an option. I can add a screen shot if need be.
It also sort of looks like it is in Desktop layout mode but on Mobile. You flip between those on mobile accidently, as there’s an icon on the bottom right of the sidebar new menu that’s a toggle.
Mine looks a bit different on desktop than that pic, but I think I figured it out: I had something called a hamburger menu that turned itself on. With that off I have the drop down like you show. Thanks!
I’m excited to see how the vote turns out, but don’t really mind either way, lol.
ETA: If it’s a tie, then what? Core meltdown and China syndrome?! (The nuclear reactor kind, not the pandemic kind )
