It’s a pain.

The “Enage My Target” thing just doesn’t seem to work. Or I’m not understanding how it was designed to work.

In my personal mission-gen thing I can, via Lua, get them to go places, attack things, dynamically, but getting my own wingman to “hit that” - something not pre-planned - is a waste of time.

It makes On Call CAS a bit unorganized; I revert to commanding It to “engage ground targets”. If he actually finds something it’s rarely what I expect so I end up being his wingman. Still fun.

SIDEBAR | In the process of coding all this I can get what I’ll call a “Mini-Alpha Strike” going, using various AI flights. Timing things has been difficult due to unknowns concerning taxi time, AR time (generally there’s always pre-strike AR, due to distance), etc.

And, I’ve a greater appreciation for tanker assets - it takes a lot of airborne gas to support it all; ends up, so far, being nearly 1:1, Tankers to Strike flights.

I find, at least in the Apache, that if you select “engage ground targets”, the order will be enunciated as “engage targets of opportunity” and your wingman will kill everything nearby until he/she runs out of ammo.

Yeah, “Engage Ground Targets” [== any TOO in their minds] works, it’s when I want them to attack something I’ve specifically ID’d.

I’m researching this now. So far it looks like “Cockpit Visual Recon” is the mech. for this. Just need to test it for a bit.

The manual (that came with the install) doesn’t cover this, or I haven’t found it with a word search.

[EDIT later] Then there’s this from @NineLine, from a post a few years ago…

In order to use the “Engage My Target” you need to use the Lock View form Padlock view. Its default assignment is the “.” on the Number Pad, it will lock your view on the target you want to engage, then you can command your flight to engage it.

The manual doesn’t really connect the two. Testing it soon.

EDIT: No joy so far. Simple setup. Me & 1 AI wingman, Hornet, convoy of fat, defenseless trucks. All boxes [in UI] checked. He will answer sometimes (with “Engage My Target/Enemy/Contact”) but do nothing or fly off to nowhere. UNLESS he spots them on his own, via Engage Ground Targets.

Some think in MP this is a ‘cheat’ but in SP it seems a basic function that’s needed to communicate with the AI, esp. in a CAS role.

In the hog you can give them fairly specific orders: two, attack armor at my SPI using missiles running in from the south. This works quite reliably except that they consider APKWS capable of taking on armor

The only time I ever had a good, reliable experience with AI coordination is in the A-10C-II. With the HMD and the “attack __ at my SPI” commands a human and an AI Hog could absolutely lay waste to anything in a 15nm radius.

I trialed this derpy thing for sh*ts and giggles. Turns out it’s a lot of fun in VR. Might actually buy it.

I’m :sparkling_heart: The new deck crew animations and wands…I just wish there was a key command to turn on Carrier lights whenever you need them…Sometimes its hard to see angle of deck even in CAT I-II

Yeah, that should be a command in the comm menu.

I can’t wait to get to try it out. Looks like it will be another month for me before I can do anything but sim vicariously from my various hotel rooms.

That’s the slickest, coolest, mother-■■■■■■■ livery I’ve ever seen on any plane ever.

Bit of a picture dump. Upgraded to the TM Hornet stick and I’ve been relearning to fly with everything feeling so different.

Valion CAP ready on the cat as the first tanker launches.

Topped up in high holding.

GBU38 drop immediately followed by a GBU12 drop. Two shacks at once.

Valion CAP still on station.

SEAD and first tanker back on deck. I wish they stayed there longer for scenery instead of despawning.

First recovery tanker coming back 20 minutes late when the wind over deck is the wrong direction…

Second recovery tanker up.

Got stuck in Marshal for 30 minutes, boltered, then snaged a 2 wire. At least it was OK.

I’ve been rediscovering this module lately. Going out to the targeting range to drop some JDAMs.
