DCS 2.9

Gah, I updated my Nvidia driver since last time I ran DCS and now it’s recompiling shaders for ages.

I was thinking the same.

If we’re talking about DCS specifically, the term Mod was used when people started making their own aircraft 3D models that used the cockpit from an existing module. They tweaked the flight model of the same module, and released it as a modification to that module.
Unofficial modules came along later, but these didn’t need that the user already had a certain aircraft module installed.
Unofficial and official modules and mods are all dependent on the core of DCS, so I’ve never considered that as a discriminator.

I guess I’m just stuck with how the term was used initially. Something about old dogs and new tricks, they say…

I’m not sure - my feel for it was that it was good enough for what VNAO were doing, and I heard they were working on an updated flight model and were trying to get official module status, though that may not be correct.

It’s also possible that VNAO are still maintaining it, just not publicly releasing updates. I’m not in with that crowd.

The thread on the official DCS forum has some visual updates that other users have been working on (fixing the sun glare and the landing gear suspension, for examples).

After a long hiatus I have gotten back into the DCS saddle.

I have not done anything serious for a couple of years now.

Except purchasing hardware and software.

After getting a VPC Constellation ALPHA-L, VPC MongoosT-50CM2 Base and a VPC 200mm S Extension as a Center Stick back in April 2022 everything ground to a hold.

Mostly because I couldn’t figure out if it was possible 2 change the trigger button 2 activation point as it was activating just before touching trigger button 3.

Also because I didn’t feel like using the VPC and my modified T16000m together, as I am not that good at remembering button layouts.

I did get the Black Shark 3 and Normandy 2.0 upgrades in 2023.

Then in October 2023 I found a couple of threads on the Virpil forum about the issue and with a little help from Virpil support I got access to some developer settings and now button 2 is to my liking.

Then on December 29 2023 I ordered another VPC Constellation ALPHA-L and a VPC WarBRD-D Base to use as a Side Stick. It was shipped on February 2 2024

At that time I was still busy with my LEGO and Märklin projects, so DCS was still on hold.

I have bought some Modules, Maps and a Campaign this year.
I got these:

For the first time ever I have bought something Flightsim software related before PaulRix!!!

Now I am on Summer Vacation and are in the process of setting up my many controls with help from JoyPro and are slowly coming back into flying again.

Happy Simming.

In the gaming world at large, a mod is any unofficial addition to a game, regardless if the code is 100% original.
Fallout: Miami is classified as a mod, even though it’s all original, as opposed to say one that made your follower in Fallout 4 talk like Hudson in Aliens.

If Bethesda releases it for all users as part of the core files, it’s not a mod.

Of course, then you have their Creation Club where not only 3rd parties but they themselves sell what could be called “mods”, although as Bethesda’s are just skins and additions would more properly be labeled miniDLC.

in the case of DCS,

A “Module” is a self contained plugin / mod that operates independently of any existing module’s code.

with DCS its complicated, as Modules refers to addons plugging into a core, and mods refer to modifying or re-using existing content.

The T-38, Like the A-4E-C, would be labelled as “Unlicensed Module”. as it does not modify or re-use existing content.

My wallet sighs in relief!

It really is. I want to see more to it than just being able to fly it.

First the Phantom and NOW the Talon is on its way? SIERRA HOTEL!!

Dad always said this was his favorite bird to fly. Wonder if I should change my methodology and follow in his footsteps via the sim… WSO to start and then transition to Pilot. Tweet to Talon transition followed up by moving into the Phantom.

PHUN!!

The ground Ai Improvements are very welcome. The barrage fire capabilities especially; being internally coded it should run a little more efficiently than my home-grown version —- assuming it will work in the dark (it should).

How many of you are purchasing the Afghanistan map? I’m thinking about it…and seeing as the Chinook is delayed, it might be a good time to pick it up. It would certainly be a good match for a fair number of the aircraft we have available to us.
