ILS approach into Andersen AFB RWY 06L
Edit: Still having some trouble anticipating the ground effect, the Mudhen gets very floaty once you enter ground effect.

Oh yeah it’s hard to get used to. I started popping the speedbrake in the flare, and holding a -200fpm descent or so and that seems to work. Kinda plants her down a bit unlike my graceful Viper landings but hey it works.
I dig that that’s a thing, in the sim.
Yeah, I usually do something like that but I don’t always manage to plant her firmly on the runway. You can hear the airbrake coming out just before I cross the threshold. But due to the runway being slightly downhill I flared too much and floated down the runway more than I would like. Luckily Andersen has a very long runway. In Ramat David this would have been a go around… back to the holding and try again…
I also put quite a lot of turbulence into the mission which didn’t exactly help
Here’s the chart for this approach:
Yeah that slope messes me up a lot too. I had to learn to trust the runway meeting me halfway on occasion.
Wow, impressive. I personally have no idea how to pull off such flying, so this is probably why it’s not really supported on the carrier. But if you let me know how to improve the situation, I’ll do my best to integrate it!
Honestly, the ball. That’s the biggest thing. I had to add a trailer I ported over from FSX to DCS to help guide me in. I did a few passes without it, and though I trapped, it wasn’t pretty.
But, yeah, having a meatball is critical for this era because that’s how you fly these planes onto the carrier. Around the 90, you find the ball, and once you’ve got it, you don’t look back inside the cockpit. (Obviously, we still do today, but now we acquire the ball as you cross the wake—I believe it’s no longer recommended to use the ball from the 90. I’ll have to double check that).
I know the Melbourne has a pretty good mirror ball. Do you think they could help with it?
Okay, I found the texts. This is from the F8H NATOPS:
" From the 180-degree position, an increase in power is required to effect a constant altitude turn to the 90-degree position. At this point, you should pick
up the meatball."
This is from the T-45 CNATRA P-1211:
45-DEGREE POSITION
“At the 45-degree position (the 45), you may be able to start to acquire the ball.”
So, as you can see, there was more emphasis on using the ball from the 90 in those days. Today it’s preached from the 45. That’s the only meaningful recommendation I’ve got. More spawn spots on different parts of the ship would be cool too, but that’s not essential at the moment. Anyway, I love your ship. It’s a ton of fun. Thanks for the mod!
That was fantastic! What an air battle, although I would venture that neither side had trouble telling one from another. To Clancy, the twin tails and twin engines probably seemed indiscernible. Bravo to FIXEDIT for bringing that scene to YouTube.
The way he combines the audiobook with music and DCS footage is fantastic. He also had the submarine chapter were they launched cruise missiles at the backfire bases around murmansk a t some point. IIRC he was using DCS and cold waters for the footage but I think he had to take the videos down because they got flagged as inappropriate or something dumb like that …
Taking down a Thunderbolt near Caen on the 4YA PO WWII Server:
“Could the original Top Gun aerial scenes be remade in DCS and would they look better?”
I’m not immediately prepared to answer that with a “No”…
Nice! I knew there was one that was incredibly accurate
I like the lighting of the one you posted more though…
