If you were wanting the updated F-5E but planning on waiting?
The current version is on sale now for $29.99. Add the 10 bucks for the upgrade and I am willing to bet that will still be cheaper than the full (undiscounted) price for the upgrade when it is released… Just sayin’
I note the existing F-5E already has a first-person pilot model, hopefully they mean a new pilot model with upper body animation and kneeboard on the pilot’s knee?
F-5E upgrade is not comparable to a Danish at Starbucks. It’s comparable to the A-10C-II upgrade, which included new complex systems like the HMD, plus artwork, flight model fixes, and other effects (vapor) also applying to the original A-10C even for those who did not purchase the upgrade.
I understand where you’re coming from, and I’m not personally excited by this update, but I don’t think they can keep doing the work of retexturing and the new pilot models for free… honestly I’m happy with the module as it is now which is probably why I’m not excited by this update.
The real question is what’s going to happen to the FC 2024 F-5E? Do they get these updates for free? Or is this to differentiate the products?
It’s about the same price… so put in perspective, yes, I think it is directly comparable to a coffee and a Danish. I would also argue that the A10C II upgrade was way under priced for what they gave us. it should have been at least a $20 upgrade for existing A10C owners.
Comparing price alone is a superficial judgment that ignores the value within. Knowing Starbuck’s quality I wouldn’t pay $10 for any of their stuff but that’s besides the point.
At any rate, I fear we are walking into a system that normalizes the John Deere method.
I am old enough, as I’m assuming most of use here are, to remember when even getting a patch or two was rather unusual. Personally I feel the moment a module is marked feature complete per either the early access agreement or the feature list it was sold under the devs owe us nothing. Yes it’s nice when they continue to update it, but for example EA doesn’t need to keep releasing updates to Janes Fighter Anthology.
I beg to differ.
Stating inflation as a reason for not getting the same value 4 years later, is very logical. $10 today was closer to $8 then.
I don’t think a new 3D model counts as regular maintenance.
The bug fixes counts as regular maintenance and are, AFAIK, included in the existing module as well.
For how long?
The F-5 module is now…8 years old?
They could’ve just left it alone and done nothing.
ED needs money to stay in business, just like any other company.
Now, there are nuances here… Existing owners of the module should benefit from this remaster, upgrade, patch, whatchawannacallit. Having them pay full price would be too much. But $10 is totally within acceptable limits, IMO. Especially since they are not forced to.
That would then mean that something like the HMD in the Warthog is $2-worth of value, which doesn’t add up.
Tomcat will soon be 6 years old. We’re getting three variants and keep getting extras like Forrestal, TARPS, etc. and will be getting Jester 2.0 without extra charge. Aerges F-1; we’re getting how many variants for one price?
Without extra charge… but also without having those things. The third variant is non existent, our TARPS pods are cosmetic, heck the last time I checked we couldn’t even equip the new naval textured bombs…
I love the Tomcat and Heatblur puts out an incredible product but Heatblur is not without faults, timelines being the main one.
And all of that to the best of my knowledge was listed as a feature when they originally went up for sale. The F-5 was sold as the F-5, that was it, just like the A-10C and the Ka-50. Coming back and giving me the stuff I paid for is very different than going “hey we have some new stuff, how does $10 sound for it?”
Well, HMD was in development for the F-18C, Viper and Apa… Sorry! The AH-64
So value vs. cost isn’t necessarily equal.
Which was developed for the Phantom… Backporting it to the Tomcat maybe isn’t that costly? Do you think they would’ve made such an improvement to Jester if it wasn’t needed for their new module? I don’t.
And the F1 was announced with several variants.
The bottom line here is that there’s a difference between making good on promises and suddenly update something that wasn’t promised or expected.
The fact that other devs promise a lot of value for their modules isn’t really relevant to this case, as I see it.
But that’s my take on it, anyway.
We all see the world from our vantagepoint.
I didn’t expect the F-5 module to get an update and when it does, I’m fine with paying $10 for it.
A couple of years ago I paid $1000 for a Onewheel Pint. A year later they came out with the Pint X, also $1000. I believe that since then there has been yet another upgrade to the Pint line. Even though newer models exist, my Pint still gets firmware upgrades which are free. But if I want the performance and range of the newer Pints I will need to make a purchase at or near full price. Because the Pint is a physical entity I suppose that in the mind of some, improvements should be perceived differently than a bit of entertainment software. I don’t see a difference. I bought and enjoyed the F-5. I will still be able to do so whether or not I buy the update.
