The ultimate indignance I had when flying a Citation II was being overhauled one day by a Piagio. I bet those guys were having a not so quiet chuckle as they flew on past.
Short Answer: Because the USAF doesn’t acknowledge the “Attack” designation unless it’s trying to seduce congress
Long Answer: The F/A-18 was originally two aircraft. The F-18 was intended to be a light, cheap fighter to replace the F-4 and complement the F-14 as well as fill out the Marine Corps. The A-18 was meant to replace the A-7 in the light attack role. Both would share a common air frame, with the difference being the sensors and avionics in the cockpit. It rapidly became apparent that even with the Lehman naval building program, the budget did not exist for enough aircraft to fill out fighter and attack squadrons throughout 16 or whatever airwings. The two jets would have to become one, and wouldn’t you know it through sublime ergonomic and engineer wizardry, MacAir pulled it off. Boom F/A-18. There was also a linked but separate aircraft called the F-18L that was developed and marketed by Northrop that was directly competing in the export market, and I imagine there was one hell of a lawsuit drawn up and waiting if they dropped the /A

I remember a brief attempt to get the Raptor named the F/A-22A. Quite amusing.
While the USAF never used that F/A thing, they are the only ones to ever use FB. Not that there should ever have been an F-111 anyway, either FB-111 or A-111 was what it should have been called! Ditto the F-117.
The FB-111. The odd confluence of TAC which wouldn’t field a bomber, and SAC which wouldn’t field a fighter.

Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 9 (VX-9) is located in NAS China Lake and is nicknamed The Vampires. VX-9 has approximately 61 officers, 290 enlisted personnel, and 25 aircraft including: the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, F/A-18C/D Hornet, UH-1Y Venom, AH-1W Super Cobra and AH-1Z Viper. Additionally, VX-9 performs operational test on the EA-6B Prowler and AV-8B Harrier II.

Beat me to the punch. Was just thinking likewise. If memory serves, I think that Chunx was in VX-31. Perhaps the CO. Anyway, if the DCS F/A-18C could get him into flight sims, that would be a miracle. That boy does love his racing sims
