DCS: Syria

From what I have seen so far… This map also has so much potential for combined arms…

Yes, there are a number of small village-like areas in the rural areas. Plus, while on Normandy we have the issue that there are bocages everywhere and all the fields are tiny - a night mare for ground AI path finding - Syria has large fields and more open ones.

Now you just need a “hovering, nose mounted gun turret” mod!

The runway at Incirlik is very uneven i seemed to be pointing down a hill on takeoff with a heavily loaded A10C

Gravity-assisted takeoff!

Crossing the Ramat David taxiway parallel to Rwy 15/33 (heading to Rwy 9) I noticed a definite bump and change in elevation as well.

There is a recurring theme when I add enemy air defences or getting fragged from my 500 Lb bombs. Either way its an orange suit and fame on Youtube :sob:

Reminds me…Back in the day (1987) during a port visit to Haifa, a squadron mate of mine, an avid skydiver, hooked up with an IDF officer at the sky diving club at Ramat David. They went skydiving.

Evidently, in the US, if there is no specified landing area, you land near a runway. Evidently, not in Israel. For some reason they don’t like you landing inside the base’s fence line. Go figure.

My buddy landed next to a runway and was tidying up his parachute when an armed IDF jeep with armed IDF soldiers pulled up and pointed all those arms at him. Fortunately his IDF host (who was outside the fence) was able to get their attention and intervene; the situation was resolved without too much paperwork and no gunplay.

Quick follow up and FWIW…

First, if you use VR and never clicked the VR button in settings, do so. Yeah, I’m sure it’s obvious but…

I’ve ‘manually’ set the settings to the same values as when you click VR: clicking High or Low, etc, then adjust. Seems like there is a little more going on when you click VR than just what the settings tell you. First I notice that the GPU memory is lower, though it depends on the map. On that subject…

  • nVidia 1080 (non-Ti) with 8Gb VRAM

Syria loads 7.7 of 8 no matter what I do and where I start. NTTR it will be 4.7 - 6.0 depending on settings, though when I hit the “High” button in settings it too will go to around 7.5 of 8.0.

So, if you’re a VR person and don’t start tweaking by hitting VR first, then adjust to taste, it seems you get different (and usually worse) result. YMMV.

Put a crowbar in my wallet and bought fpsVR (Steam) and it’s a handy tool. Gives you GPU and CPU values for memory for instance.

It seems to tell me I need: a) a new, more up-to-date, video card with more than 8Gb VRAM, and b) more than 32 GB of system RAM (it was maxing that out in Syria, or nearly so).

EDIT: It (fpsVR) also indicated that the CPU still has some room to grow, though not enough to run it on High, at leas relative to the GPU.

Hi All,
I just had a great experience with this map. Took the Jug for a spin out of Beirut north to a little airstip above Tripoli. WOW OH WOW. This thing is so beautiful. The trees are awesome. Performance was not a problem with ground shadows on. Really like this map. Guess I will be creating missions there. Dangit!

The water transparecy on the shores is really beautiful. I saw 60 fps but mostly was between 45 and 50’s. Cities did not kill the experience but i was alone. Here is a VR shot

I just took a humvee for a drive in Beirut, have they done some work on getting CA to work in VR?

l
you still have to use the mouse to look around, but it seems to work quite well, (in the humvee anyway)

Some very nice scenery in Israel, I took a jug for a spin over the sea of Galilee shot down a syrian C130 and landed at a very nice strip whos name escapes me I am afraid

Perectish landing but I somehow forgot to use the brakes until I realised I was running out of runway and then became a bit over zealous

Well, Microsoft Simulator’s training instructor clearly states that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing… I guess we are entering a new phase in aviation!
