DCS VR - SteamVR has encountered a critical error

,

What other software do you use that uses Steam VR?

I might have found the issue.
My pagefile was limited to 8GB. Increased its allowed size to 64GB and a minimum size of 32GB and my system immediately took 40GB of it when running DCS even though I have 32GB of RAM.

Was able to fly 3 missions in a row without issue.

Resurrecting this thread…
Steam VR keeps on getting critical problems and crashes.
I don’t have a G-Synch compatible 2D screen, so I don’t have any option to turn that off, per @fearlessfrog’s solution.

I have tried reinstalling Steam VR and WMR for Steam VR.

Hoping someone have read about a definitive solution, somewhere, that I haven’t. I see several people encounter this problem…

Problem occurs in IL-2 as well…
Nuke Steam from orbit…?

Its not that I reckon. Have you checked all your USB host devices in device manager to see if they don’t suffer from power saving thingamibobsicles?

I had it go black for a bit, but sadly don’t clearly remember what unforked the thing. It’s a pc, the pieces jiggle

Checked that. I changed USB hub recently…

Edit. I actually changed back to the old USB hub, but still got blackouts. Hey, no stone unturned…
The blackouts show some variation. Sometimes I can Alt-Tab back into the VR cockpit again, on other occasions Steam VR crashes.

Too bad you don’t have access to another G2 so that you could eliminate hardware. Hang in there Troll. Try to be like Spock and remain logical and unemotional.

Oh wait, Spock’s mother was a human and he almost rage killed Jim Kirk. Never mind.

Hm… My daughter inherited the old PC. I could try that one. Just load up Steam VR and free DCS. I also still have the old G2 cable.

Things that makes me go ”Hmmm…”

So, these blackouts are supposed to be associated with motion smoothing…
So I turned that off in Steam VR.
Been flying around trying to get blackouts and crashes for a few hours now, but it’s steady as a rock.
Thing is that I turned off the Steam VR global setting for motion smoothing, it’s still on in the per application DCS setting and functioning in the sim.

Somebody please explain this to me, because I don’t understand.

Just a blind shot (enjoying my holidays faaaar away from my PC so I can’t give you more precise hints).

Check what settings regarding reprojections you have in this file:
MixedRealityVRDriver\resources\settings\default.vrsettings

Some time ago I had different settings dialed in via the file above and via the WMR portal in SteamVR which caused all kinds of issues.

This is so strange…
I got DCS to work without Steam VR crashing by setting Motion Smoothing to off in general Steam VR settings, but keeping it on auto in WMR For Steam VR.

Happy with that I set out to try IL-2, which I hadn’t played since I built the new PC.
Aaaand the blackouts started to happen there too. But this time it was possible to pause the sim, alt-tab out and in again.
So I tried the same trick here.
WMR for SVR reprojection to Auto
Steam VR Motion Smoothing to Off
Steam VR Video, Per application setting to Motion Smoothing Enabled.

This worked just fine! Reprojection still worked and no black outs.

Then, a couple of days later it decided that Motion Smoothing Off means OFF! There still seems to be a bottom FPS line of 45, but FPS now vary between 45-90… I haven’t changed anything.

I’m getting ready to nuke this Windows install and reinstall everything.

I just can’t resolve this problem with Steam VR… All I know is that it must have something to do with Steam VR… OpenXR and MSFS works great. The moment I start using Steam VR with DCS or IL-2, I run into problems.
I have tried reinstalling Steam, Steam VR, WMR portal, WMR for Steam VR, in and out of beta, but I still experience problems.

All I can think of now is to reinstall Windows and everything else.

what are the admin permissions for both programs?

Also can you post the windows crash dump?

DCS and IL-2? DCS is set as run as administrator. IL-2 I’m not sure. Will check.

It’s not Windows that crashes, just Steam VR. Does the Windows crash dump contain info on that?

So… Following this crazy line of thought: ”@SkateZilla has been known to guide DCS users out of trouble, once or twice in the past and may possibly know what he’s talking about” I set out to run IL-2, Steam VR and WMR for SVR as admin. Tested both IL-2 and DCS, briefly, without anything crashing but my virtual foes.

Now, I need to test this a bit further, but initial impressions are indeed positive.

Could it really have been that simple…? :eyes:

SteamVR and DCS crash alot when using my app to launch DCS.

Still looking into that. either a permissions issue, or ED changed the SteamVR Parameter
