Wow I had LHX on my Sega Megadrive! I don’t remember the Blackhawk or the Osprey though! That’s so cool
AFAIK Genesis/Megadrive version only featured LHX and Apache. It was limited in other aspects as well in comparison with PC version.
I remember (I was very young) it having the apache and that was the “hard mode” but I also remember it not explaining things very well either. I do recall enjoying it and the extraction missions very much. It was a cool game. Probably an odd thing to put on Megadrive though. I wonder how well it sold
I flew the Comanche and the Osprey the most in LHX because I didn’t have them elsewhere. I had better Apache ones elsewhere so I didn’t fly it in LHX.
Well, I might have had the NL Comanche actually, but that was a very different game.
And here’s something really rare - F-117 Stealth Fighter 2.0 for Macintosh from 1994. It had updated gfx and sound and run in high-res compared to PC and Amiga versions.
Now you screw my happiness for this month. I will cry all the month why we not have this for PC with high resolution graphics. Its the same with tornado, i could pay like 300 euros for a high resolution DI Tornado for PC, only High resolution, nothing more!
The only way I can comfort you is to say that there was no high res Tornado version that I know of for Mac or any other system. The PC version was the best you could get.
That’s more because DCS still looks a lot like this, rather than LOMAC being ahead of its time.
DCS has improved, but the improvements have been evolutionary not revolutionary.
idk I still vividly remember that short teaser clip (that I downloaded from fileshack, there was no YT back then) from the cockpit of MIG-29 flying low over some town, passing that smoking chimney and all the buildings and trees, water effects such as waves and reflections - water was mostly just plain texture in other sims. It was ground breaking at the time. I remember collecting my jaw from the floor after seeing that.
I remember that vid! I was amazed at the sensation of speed.
Nice flashback to see LOMAC again. ![]()
LOMAC looked better than other flight sims, yes, but if you look at Doom 3 and Half Life 2 and Far Cry they were ahead of LOMAC.
Meanwhile, CFS3 and Falcon 4 Allied Force were behind the times. Il-2 was pretty much right at the right level in 2004/5 and seemed to be comparable to LOMAC.
Well yes, compared with other sims it was better, but comparing it to FPS games which offered obviously smaller scale is not fair. It would be the same as if you compared DCS World with Far Cry 5 or DOOM Eternal today. FPS game will always have better detail since they don’t have to render 100 miles of terrain.
And you are not running through them at 600mph
I’m not talking about what is fair or not. I’m saying that LOMAC, while looking better than many of its contemporaries when it was released, did not “blow me away” because flight sims are always behind other types of games.
I can’t just cut off that part of my brain that was playing those games and see LOMAC with completely unaware eyes, it doesn’t work that way. I noticed it didn’t appear painfully out of date, like CFS3’s water did when it came out, but Il-2’s 2001 release had already introduced what I considered “modern” graphics to flight sims. LOMAC looked like Il-2 with modern jets to me.
You’d probably be gobsmacked to know how many people out there can differentiate things that even I can’t tell. I’ve had a friend tell me he notices how “dated” a game that came out in 2015 looks compared to today! I honestly couldn’t tell if you showed me an isolated picture of a building in sunlight between the two games which was released before which, but he swears he has “difficulty” adapting to the 5 yr old levels.
Now I’ve never tested him, to see if he REALLY can tell or this is a simple “I know this game is older so it must look inferior” equation happening in his brain, by using unidentifiable shots of random objects in games to see if it’s real or imagined. I know he told me he thinks Ghost Recon Breakpoint looks “noticeably” better than Wildlands when I can barely tell.
Fair enough, lets go back to early 90s then and marvel at this classic:
This and Red Baron were huge time sinkers for me back in my early PC era.
I spent a lot of time in AotP. I flew the Tigercat and Bearcat often there. I also remember things like performance issues and dumb wingmen shooting me down because I was between them and the enemy!
