FTFY
So, I hopped in for a bit Friday evening, loaded up my previous Thargoid hunting built Chieftan…and realized I had no clue what to do, where to go, or how to go about getting involved in current Thargoid things.
Searching the forums and subreddit have reminded me how much I’ve missed the last almost year, but that’s about it.
So, uh, what’s exactly going on nowadays with fighting Thargoids, do I still need to ditch my Guardian tech, and now that eddb.io is gone, where do I get the most recent info?
Guardian tech is still ok outside systems with a maelstrom, and in fact fighting interceptor class thargoids in Thargoid controlled systems is still helpful to the war effort, I think.
If you want to get involved in a bit of Titan bashing then you will need to swap out for human AX weapons. The best place to do that currently is at a rescue megaship. You will also need at least two caustic sinks and a thargoid pulse neutraliser, and I would recommend adding a heatsink too. Running cool is vital when you are in the vacinity of a Titan.
The current focus of attention is Titan Leigong. You can find the system he (or she, or it?) is in using the galaxy map - there is a menu dedicated to the conflict on the left hand side. Expect to be hyperdicted on the way there and once in the system you will likely be interdicted. However these are easily dealt with unless it’s a glaive, in which case you will have to fight but expect to lose (unless your AX pilot skills save the day).
Supercruise to the maelstrom and once you drop out fly at full throttle towards the centre. Just keep going straight and don’t trust your hud. Keep an eye on your caustic sinks and pop them as soon as they fill up. I find that getting in to the Titan and back out again exhausts all ammo for 2 sinks, so bear that in mind.
If you want to damage the Titan directly you will need to use the guardian nanite AX torpedos on the 8 heat vents on the top side when they open, and then zip round to the underside to fire any other AX weapons at the thermal core when it pops out. When the thermal core retracts retreat out of range of the blue torus. Rinse and repeat, and expect a very busy time once you attract attention.
Alternatively, you can rescue some prisoners, in which case you will need a thargoid pulse wave scanner to find them, subsurface extraction missiles to free them, and collector limpets to scoop them up. Also, remain as cold as possible to avoid getting noticed.
You can also visit the spire sites. Disrupting the spires helps with the war effort - you can pick up missions from nearby systems to sabotage them. Also, Orthrus hunting is supposed to be quite profitable at the spire sites.
Check out the Defence Council of Humanity website: https://dcoh.watch/
EDIT: Note that the subsurface extraction missile, which rescues humans from Titans, is very similarly named to the subsurface detonation missile, which is for asteroid core mining. Accident waiting to happen there.
Also, there is stuff to collect at spire sites which you can sell back to rescue megaships for reasonable amounts, and there are some exobiological samples to collect which are worth quite a bit, too.
Thank you!
How do I find the rescue ships? I haven’t been able to figure out how to filter for those on the galaxy map.
Zoom out. They are the green icons that look a bit like a medical cross.
Thanks!
I’ll give it all another shot tonight, I think. Thankfully the rebut on the Chieftan is pretty low.
I found the Chieftain to be a bit on the fragile side facing a Titan, although that could be more related to my lack of piloting skill. I have swapped out for my Krait Mk 2 which is a bit sturdier.
I did exactly the same thing yesterday lol flew a few systems over for a salvage contract and closed the game out.
I spent the last two evenings trying to loot abandoned settlements for upgrades with this method:
However it seems a more recent patch has added pirates back in. Every time I dropped in to abandoned settlements, I’d either encounter pirates right away, who would kill me or destroy my SRV before I could kill any of them, or they’d drop in while I was inside a building and destroy my SRV and kill me.
Not sure when the fun parts of Space Legs kicks in.
… I did write an AAR about that. I was a bit more lucky though
There is definitely a learning curve to the on-foot stuff. I still have trouble with the combat at settlements unless I have my trusty Scorpion on hand for when things turn ugly. But then it was the same for ship to ship combat. I ate a whole bunch of rebuys back in the day learning that the Cobra is fragile and the Asp is decidly sub-optimal for combat. I can generally hold my own in both of those ships today but it took a lot of practice to get there.
My advice - start with the simple retrieval missions where a ship or satellite has crashed and you have to go get some data or object. Loot everything you can - it’s a good way of picking up materials and stuff to trade. Enemy combatants generally turn up at some point but if you’ve completed the task when they do you can retreat easily. Or my favourite tactic is to jump in my SRV and run them all over like a modern space version of Carmageddon . Also, I find being down on a deserted planet not knowing when trouble will drop in can be quite tense, a little bit like the tension in Aliens when they are exploring the settlement.
Also, most of the weapons are poor unless levelled up - whenever you land in a station or outpost, check the shop for pre-engineered weapons. I’ve picked up several level 3 options that way and it makes a lot of difference.
EDIT: Also, I seem to be using the word also a lot, so I will also be trying to avoid saying also in future posts, and also to avoid repetition, like when I keep repeating the word also, also.
EDIT EDIT: You can also (damn!) stack retrieval missions which makes it quite efficient from a time / reward perspective.
My best suggestion is- come loaded for bear, and by that I mean- drop from the ship with a Combat SRV, the Scorpion.
Behave as Mechanised Infantry. Don’t try to Rambo your way through it.
And if you can mount Point Defense Turret/systems on your ship so they help you out.
EDIT: Found it!
Leigong is about half way gone but there is still plenty of fun for everyone if you log in today. We are on heart 4 out of 8. Here are some screenies I took during my recent short play sessions, including today. I made about 14 million in combat bonds with 2 rebuys of about 6 million each, so breaking even :
Went in on Leigong as well.
First time I managed to neutralize the Pulse Wave only to get surprised by a second wave that I didn’t correctly time and got ejected.
Next time I arrived at the titan. I was in the private group of the Anti-Xeno Initiative. Unfortunately I was alone although there supposed to be over 8000 members in this group. I managed to get some torpedos into the vents and got the titan to expose its thermal core. I guess I didn’t managed my heat though and got swarmed by lots of 'goids. I did escape though.
The last attempt was the most successful. I did several runs, hitting up to four vents and emptying a clip of AX Missiles into the core. It’s kind of a cool gameplay loop.
Leigong is in Meltdown. It’s going to blow up in 7 hours:
I really need to jump back in and do something before they’re all gone. I keep missing stuff.
There are still 6 left and it looks like they are going to get progressively harder to kill. The next one is expected to take 3-4 weeks or so. I definitely would recommend having a go at some of the Thargoid gameplay if you get the chance - I think Frontier have done a very good job of this bit of the game. I’m not a particularly combat focussed player but I have been enjoying disrupting the spire sites and taking down the Titans. The sound design as much as anything else is very immersive.
