Few trips ( 8 or 9 ) with my Type 7 - Sleipnir and went straight into top 25% @ 2800 Metric Tons of Lithium! YAY!
Go away!
@komemiute - actually, thanks for that depressing info. I have been at it for hours every day the last 4 days and have managed to haul a paltry 1,610t - and that after a single run this morning, where I had yet another attempted interdiction.
It’s very rare that they manage to interdict me (usually when I’m trying to pull some ‘clever’ tactic that turns out not so clever after all) - but my knees are really suffering with all the pedal action, and they would suffer even more if actually had to fight.
It was bad enough with the Reiter’s syndrome, but since I got osteo-arthritis in both knees, using my pedals has been a problem. I could go back to using the stick twist, but I remember that when I used that for yaw to start with, I always ended up losing the interdiction battles.
So - knowing I have to reach 8,000t to get into the 25% bracket, I have given up on this one. I have moved up a tier, though, and my reward is currently 9.8 million creds (giving a total of over 15 mill in the bank), so not bad. On payout, I will buy myself a 5A FSD for 33LY jump capacity and head off into the black yonder. I have all the top class scanners etc and I was wondering if it wouldn’t be a bad idea to swap my two 8t cargo racks for fuel tanks. It would reduce the jump range, but if there are no scoopable stars around it could be a ship saver.
Also, maybe add some fuel transfer limpets? For the same eventuality? Not done exploration, so it’s a learning experience for me this time.
I’m actually sorry…
I can tell you though that the Type 7 is probably the best ship to fight interdictions with.
Just to be sure, you’re having NPC trying and interdict you or real players? (Filled squares on the radar vs hollow ones)
In any case I have accrued quite some “flight” hours under my belt- and much of Elite is personal-skill-based just as much as it could happen in DCS or any other “sort-of-sim”.
Yes, outfitting gives you an edge, in certain cases an impressive one, but deep down skill is still really necessary*.
*I mainly insist on this as my setup for the Type 7 is kind of hardcore. No shield, no heavy armor, no weapons, no fuel scoop… literally an empty shell filled with cargo to the brim (one trip allows me to deliver in excess of 300 metric tons of goods). When you run around sitting in such a glass bathtub, you have to know what you’re doing.
I still mess up from time to time, but I have developed some serious muscle-memory and my own SOP.
Having read of your medical condition I can only offer you my help,
Should you ever need a wingman that can fend off nearly any assault, ring me up…
I can be found in game as ‘Benjamin K. Master’ or on steam as Komemiute.
Once you have a bloodthirsty madman trustable wingman in a kitted out Federal Assaul Ship, things gets better fast.
Probably too late for this CG, but my offer will always stand.
It’s actually 2600 or something. I went 2800 for safety-margin reasons…
Best tactic for me when interdicted is to throttle down to submit. All pips in engine. Crank throttle and boost as much as you can as soon as you drop out. Pray that your shields will hold until FSD cooldown is achieved and super cruise away.
The mini game is just too time consuming and in a cargo hauler you usually don’t stand a chance.
Don’ try this in slow ships. My Type-6 and Type-7 work fine with this tactics.
I once tried to trade shieldless but took a Plasma Accelerator projectile to my knee… Didn’t workout well…
Exploration is somewhat of an acquired taste.
As you would expect navigating the real galaxy, unless you actively look for beauty you’ll find little of interest.
You have to pay attention to the little things, find a nice way to frame the amazing views/panoramas and sometimes it’s actually simply… simple.
You fly, you honk and you consider if and what to explore in more details.
The best part is realising you’re alone and away from eveything and everyone and the feeling you get when you know you want to come back.
Those few last dozen jumps, with worn out painjob, tired systems- you start to realize you’re approaching civilization again… Wow- that’s something.
Oh, and when you reach the Core. That’s a view to remember…
Come to think of it I might actually depart myself.
Fuel limpets are only to give fuel to someone not to get it.
All you need for deep exploration is : fuel scoop, extra tanks, advanced and detailed scanner, a, hangar with SRV and a repair module. Heatsinks, Shields and weapons are a nice extra but can be done without.
With a Type seven I never had to give up an interdiction.
Plus, since I’m also trading shieldless I cannot afford to risk it…
Truly, a lot depends on what ship tries to I/D me.
If it’s a Cobra, Eagle or of similar class, there’s no running away once in Normal-Space, no pure trader ship can hope to resist adirect attack.
If it’s something bigger and slower there’s a margin…
Thanks for the offer. As soon as my ship is ready, I’m off to deep space, though - so might be a while before I bump into any more nasty types (I hope!).
Been reading exploration guides all morning and some are contradictory in their advice, but what the hell - it’s a learning experience
Thanks for the tips. I’m torn between light and long jumps or heavier and ready to rock!
As for interdiction - I only lost one these last days, and that was due to trying to be a smartass. The problem was, I tried to drop the instant I saw the smug message, but just as I was hitting the FSD dropout button, the interdiction graphic came up. So it counted as being interdicted, rather than dropping voluntarily - and I suffered damage and longer FSD recharge as a consequence.
Otherwise, I’ve always evaded, in the Cobra III, Type 6, Keelback and DB Explorer - probably why my knees suffer!
When I got jumped outside stations, I just found the T6 and Keelback agility was pants.
Agree with you about Elite Dangerous being a vehicle for appreciating VR, to be honest when I got my Oculus I bought a bunch of VR games from Oculus store and Steam, and I’ve barely played anything non-sim VR because Elite Dangerous is so awesome and addicting in VR.
A quick tip on whether you are seeing humans or AI, as someone mentioned on your scanner humans will show up as an empty square and AI will be a filled square, also humans will all be named “CMDR John Smith” whereas AI are named just “John Smith”.
You will run into humans a lot if you play in “Open” mode and you are in the neighborhood of popular systems like the starting system LHS 3447 or Sol, or some of the places where their location and system layout create conditions to make alot of money and reputation fast (Quince, Wu Guinagi), also the location of Community Goals attract a ton of humans and unfortunately alot of griefers that just blow people up for no reason, which is why I usually switch to solo when I get near those griefer areas.
One quick tip if you are getting interdicted a lot and getting blown up, you can usually run away from the interdictor by:
- Submitting to the interdiction by stopping your engine, this will allow your FSD to recharge quickly when you drop out of super cruise, instead of needing a full cooldown from trying to fight the interdiction and failing
- Set 3 bars to ENG and put the enemy ship(s) on your six
- Full throttle and keep boosting over and over and barrel rolling until your FSD is ready to jump, barrell rolling makes it hard for the enemy to hit you from behind while you’re running away
- You can bypass the FSD drive mass lock limitation from being too close to the enemy by setting a jump target in hyperspace outside the local system ahead of time and jumping out of the system instead of just back to supercruise
Using this approach you can pretty much escape any AI and most humans, I’m sure some trolls have some meta build to defeat this, but I have yet to be taken out as long as I was quick with the above approach
THIS! If you submit your FSD cool down is ten seconds, and then you can jump to a new place. If you get yanked I believe it’s the full 40 second emergency cool down.
Woohoo! Got a nice 9+ mill bonus, went to the local systems and scanned around 50 objects - went most way back towards Aulin and sold my scans for loadsa dosh.
Bought me an Asp Explorer and had plenty to completely kit it out. Possible improvements FSD from a 5B (23ly) to a 5A.
I swapped over the goodies from my Diamondback and sold the remaining better than standard modules. Just need a couple of field repair units (FMU) and I’m ready ship-wise, but I do want to practise both fuel scooping and neutron jumping before I go - so I’ll buy something like a Viper to practice with, which I can then also use for the odd bounty hunt.
I do like the improved view from the Asp cockpit - I already thought the Diamondback had a nice view, but this is better.
Elite just moved up a notch in the schedule priority table!
New CG’s active:
I do wish ED featured an offline mode. I understand some things wouldn’t be possible but I’d love if it had a way to play offline.
It’d be a great way to pass time on extended work trips.
Well regarding mining, I found a good guide (Popular Guide To Mining) and it shows everything in good detail, plus more advice - so next time, I should be okay. Thanks for offering, @Navynuke99.
I’m just prepping for heading out into the wild black yonder, but will no doubt want to try mining again in future.
When I tried the newfangled way last time and couldn’t cut chunks with the mining laser, I’m wondering if it may have been a kind of rock you can’t mine from. It was just a random ring on a random planet, which turned out to be an ice ring. The prospector did show various different content, but nothing that I’d heard of before.
Actually, I might see you beforehand, as I want to head out Colonia way, before heading off further out.
I arrived in Harma yesterday. Ready for some bounty hunting.
I just arrived in the Harma System and after a quick look at the state (tier 3 already) I dont think this community goal will last long
Oh gosh, I got this PTSD flashback of one of my Ex’s talking. Sorry…
