Foothold - Persian Gulf

OK..updated the server and changed the .miz file to 0600..so a pinky sky getting ready for sunrise. I also changed the weather preset..so a bit more cloudy and some low(er) layers..might be a bit more of a challenge..you’ll have to pick your holes in the overcast. We can adjust it if there is opposition to it. The mission will start off kind of dark..but should lighten quickly. I did not have a chance to dig into the guts of the mission yet to see about enabling the UH-60L mod..I’ll try to work on that tonight.

Gods DCS looks so good…

Just flew a test mission with the new server settings (weather and time)…oh man I was in heaven. Watching the sky turn from pink to sunrise…broken cloud layers that made you work to get line of sight with the TPOD. Just fun stuff…

Headed out to Tunb and the Tunb Defence SEAD island this morning to test out the new .miz settings on the server. I like the clouds..they will make you work for an angle..

Took a SEAD loadout of 4 LD-10 ARMs and a pair of GB-6 glide bombs with SFWs…

Feels weird being in Khasab after not playing much of a role in the liberation of it..

Love the JF-17 module. This is only the second time this has happened..not sure what atmospheric condition causes it..but at 25K I started getting canopy fogging. Hit the defogger and it gradually went away over a few minutes. Great little detail in the module…

My first GB-6 got shot down. You pretty much have to eliminate all of the close-in weapons systems like ZSU-23s or whatever SHORAD type defenses exist in order to get the fat-boy GB-6 into action…

Had to work to find slant angles that worked for the targeting pod…at one point I actually used the ground mapping radar to find the islands and set a SPI that I could slave the TPOD to..then just waited until the clouds cooperated…

Feet dry back over to RAK. Just one sortie this morning..I shouldn’t even be up yet…

I might be able to get on a little bit tonight, but beginning tomorrow about 2026-02-20T05:00:00Z2026-02-23T07:00:00Z I should have little interruption except to throw the kids some Cheerios and pizza :ogre:

What’s the grand plan? Here’s some choices as I see it:

A - Operation Enduring 21% Illiteracy Rate

This would be a plinking off of each island to the West one by one. They also have a Vasily Bykov DD (or two) that patrols the area and lots of Sams. Could be a good jump off point for the main land.

B - Operation True Warrior Ethos But No Touching

This would be we go for Qeshm Island main airport as the prize and use that to spread out. Might need to deal with the ships as well.

C - Operation Naval Gazing

We are going to get annoyed by the large carrier group. We should deal with that first before the Islands or Qeshm.

  • Operation True Warrior Ethos But No Touching
  • Operation Naval Gazing
  • None of the Above

What do you all think?

We could also move the carrier group up (blue box, bottom left of A), but that probably isn’t the intent of the mission? I like boats and landing on them though

I say once operation 21% Illitiracy is underway, IE the DDGs and Siri islands are no longer a factor, the CVBG can move up to a position just a smidge north of Abu Nayar. In fact, perhaps you might already move it close to the southwest of Abu Nayar.

It might take some planning, but a repeated massive Viggen strike on the red CVBG might be fun and worth trying. Would take a lot of cat herding to get all of us launching sea skimmers in more or less the same window.

So much concur.

@Troll I might need your help here. I did a dry run the other day waiting for @BeachAV8R (using real targets and live ammo, so perhaps not super dry) with the Swedish triangular penetrator and some RB15-F’s. What I found is that I got the ships within about 60km using A1 on the radar (nice black dots), put it to ‘Single’ RB switch (so I could do one at a time with a nice pause to stop them colliding going evasive), ‘ATK’ (?) on the right side weapons wheelie thing and left it in NAV mode. I was quite low but it would not do the weapons release? I had the trigger cover open as well. It was quite frustrating as I felt all Luke Skywalker and the exhaust port aiming (‘he turned off his targeting computer!’) but it couldn’t let go the weapon.

Was I too low or something else? I did shuffle the lottery wheel around from ATT/ATK to all the way around and then on the way back (while a bit too late as I had turned and was out of range at that point) they did actually fire - so is the secret the wheel thingy position? Help!

It’s been a while, but too low sounds right. Addendum: Disregard, per Chucks guide the missile will hit the water if you’re too low, not fail to launch.

I took a crack at Abu Musa with the Apache this morning, and knocked down some of the SAM’s and radars.

Fired up the Mudhen, and while it made some amazing screen shots, I didn’t accomplish anything worth doing.

I at least got some practice with the TPOD, still need to get back into the radar.

I will happily suppot whatever option we go for, I voted for Operation Naval Gazing to have a chance to fire up the Viggen.

The viggen antiship missiles are far better than the harpoon the hornet flings, right?

Um… I’ll try. It’s been a while. Actually, I prefer the RB04 and the reason for this is quite silly. When I did my tour as a crew chief, the AJS was just beginning to trickle out from the workshops to the squadrons. We had the legacy AJ and those could not shoot the RB15. I remember the first time we actually got to see a real one. Lots of oooh’s and aaaah’s. So, in short, I am closer to the 04 than the 15 simply because I never loaded a 15…
Anyway, that little anecdote probably won’t help you sinking ships even one little bit.
I’ll have a look. I believe you must think in swedish, much like the chef.

Only if you are keen, as I can read up on it in the chuckie - I just thought you’d have a back tattoo of the steps or something.

“I’m from Bueno Aires and I say..” etc. anything we can fling would be good. I think the RB thingys are good at dodging CIWS stuff but maybe Harpoon’s do as well. If anyone doesn’t have a Viggen then a good fallback.

The potential for an organized mass attempt sounds good to me. I really like the idea of a sort of hillbilly racing attack with as many of us as possible at the same time. In the Viggen it’s like 4 switches and then just flying and a button press, so it’s not like we need a lot of experience or anything. It’s a multiplayer game, so there’s no point playing it by ourselves, we could do that on our own PCs.

Beach (or anyone with the Jeff) could also try the Chinese C802AK anti-ship missile on this strike, I honestly have no clue how it compares to the harpoon and the Rb15. I’d love to join the strike driving my own viggen or provide top cover or anything.

Was this a planned attack with Bx waypoints or a quick shot?
Quick shots needs the master mode in NAV or SPA with weapons selector in ATK and the max range is 20 Km.
If planned, then the Bx points must be set up and master mode ANF, weapon to ATK.

Waypoints are a bit too cerebral for what I was thinking, so a quick shot. I’ll try again with the RB-4’s. Release about 450m high or so, right?

I usually release lower than that. About 100m.

About the 15. I’m not sure why yours wouldn’t release, but it could be that if in ANF and ATK, it expects Bx waypoints and if not you need to be in NAV or SPA and ATK and release more or less towards the targets at a a max range of 20 Km.

Pls count mine as a C. Just a millisecond before I clicked, the page shifted and my C became a D. Thx.

Whatever we do, it will be more fun and arguably more effective if we do it in mass.

Does anyone know how many and what type of escorts will we face? I’ll assume stiffer resistance than faced in Operation Praying Mantis?
