Probably Tunb, tho I did take some HARMs to Qhesm too.
I’m out flying today..hope to join later this evening.
I will fly for a bit
Join you in an hour or two. PC unavailable tonight, too bad ‘cause I wanted to try combining JSOW and the HTS.
I tried it earlier this day but the jsow missed horribly. Perhaps I should have been more patient with the HTS.
The trick is to use the HTS in conjunction with a TGP. The TGP will slew to where the HTS triangulates the emitter. PGM1 should be accurate enough to have the emitter pretty centered but it’s rarely good enough for weapons delivery other than HARMs. Designate the precise coords with the TGP. You should be able to find a sam site with the TGP at around PGM3 or PGM2. Only HARMs can be used with the HTS alone. Bombs always require a precise designation through other means like a TGP
Very successful evening. Greater Tunb is under our Control
I wanted to finish the Mission to bomb the port of Bandar-e-Lengeh but appranetly dropping two GBU-31 isn’t counted as a valid hit to finish the mission. Oh well, at least I set the whole city ablaze with my two 2000lbs GBU’s
@miRage and I then flew a lot of CAP and SEAD. Finally I cleaned up Tunb and Greater Tunb with an A-10C II and resupplied Greater Tunb with a C-130. My attempt to capture Tunb as well ended in flames because the fuel storage tanks are right next to the runway elevated on earthworks and my left wing clipped the tanks. Note to self: The C-130 does not fit on this runway ![]()
Off we go:
A coffee and my ipad with the checklist/internet radio
Loving the after action reports! Sad I missed out today..flew all day..getting back late. I’ll try to hop on for a bit in maybe an hour.
I wish I could join but I am about to go to bed, it’s alread 2am over here ![]()
Maybe we can take Bandar-e-Lengeh tomorrow. Qeshm Island will take a larger effort I think. There’s a lot of enemy air activity over there and the Island gets resupplied so regularly that any time mirage and I knocked out a few SAMs they were resupplied a short while later.
My bachelor gaming night Friday was upended when my wife volunteered me to chaperone a sleepover of five 12 year old girls
. I guess that some would call her move “well played”. I cried!
Any who, when I finally reclaimed the house today, I was able to jump on and help miRage with a minor amount of capping. I spent the first few missions flying target drones duties for team Red, while Derby and miRage did their stellar work as usual, claiming land and sending bad guys home in pine boxes. Derby was making life rough on the remnants of team Red clinging to the Tunbs in his Warthog, while miRage was a wrecking machine to enemy air in his Hornet.
Derby hunted down the very last enemy on Great Tunb, which I imagined hiding in a spider hole, a very bad place to be with 30 mike mike raining down. The enemy island defenders vanquished, he grabbed a Herc and loaded it like a longshoreman with supplies for our new island.
While this was going on, miRage requisitioned a Huey from Khasab base ops (never mind that he didn’t know how to fly it) and used it to resupply the depleted AA missile batteries. In a main rotor durability testing sort of way.
I finally got to grips with the Hornet radar (it’s been a while) and managed to down a Frogfoot, Fishbed, and 2 x Fullbacks, while Derby dropped much needed supplies at Greater Tunb in his pimped out Hercules.
I imagined him autopilot engaged, with his boots up on the glaresheild, while he washed down a Brat with a Helles, bobbing his head to Ramstein.
Random screens for the CAP team.
Setup a NASMAS on the Tunb defense, and the version we have in this scenario has about 1/3rd of the range of a HAWK battery in DCS.
Decided to try something else than logistics. Select a F-4 Phantom for the runway attack mission available. As nooone else was on the server I selected a livery from my Phantom squadron.
Long story short: The AA defenses on such an airfield were too numerous for me to overcome… I flew really low at the last leg, but still they managed to shoot me down before I could drop any bombs, lol. Back to the Huey ![]()
I think going solo Phantom with dumb bombs in a modern foothold scenario with pantsirs, tors and tunguskas (among others) is probably not the wisest choice ![]()
If there’s no Pantsir present and no long range SAMs you can probably go in at high altitude but there are better tools for the job xD
Ha ha, you are right, there are better planes with a chance of surviving. It’s just that I fly most times the F-4 and A-4 and I don’t really have much time in the modern airframes - I use rockets and bombs 90%+ of the time. Of course this does not fit the modern foothold mission, so I went onto FMDs Vietnam server next and flew the A-4 with dumb bombs vs Rota airfield…
I know what you mean, but I can also feel the pull that a low level, nearly-Mach2, airfield bombing run has.
Like a certain approximation of the first death star trench run.

I do hope that the Cold War Germany map will allow the future DCS Tornato do do synchronized Airfields attacks. ![]()
Bummer, the force was not with me…
Oh I know how to fly it. I’m just terribly bad at it ![]()
If I were a helo pilot my callsign would be “VRS”.
Me too. I prefer the cold war stuff. Is there a 80s Cold War Germany variant for foothold? Might be fun once this campaign is over.
Pantsir is the bain of my existence even in a modern jet ![]()
Yes, there is a build for Cold War Germany and you can limit the equipment to circa 1989. It’s described in the documentation accompanying the mission. It requires a few edits to the mission, but they are not complicated. I have it up and running on tetet de but only did two flights on it. Once the PG campaign is finished, we can try it out, preferably on Beach’s host…
I am very much in favor of that. 1989 Germany.
HUBBA HUBBA! I’m on it too!
I’m stoked for a cold war playthrough of this
