I’m intrigued… Gave me definite Battlefield Vietnam vibes. (Which BTW was the last battlefield game I played)

To be fair to the Doom franchise, I’m sure part of my loss of interest in the franchise has to do with my age and also a “been there, done that already” attitude. I’m just not into the frenetic nonstop action of first person shooters anymore.

It was not in the F2A but I flew a fun little mission made in May of 2025 by tomhighway using the A6M2 zero a couple of days ago. The mission is compatible with the stock version of the game and several of the mod packs. I liked it so much that I actually wrote a review for it which is something I had not done for quite some time.

It even includes a nice mottled skin made by vpmedia. The skin does not work properly in the mod packs but it does still work properly in the stock versions of the game.

Wow. That’s a familiar name from the past.
Even though vpmedia let his website lapse he is still around and he posted at Mission4Today as recently as August 08th, 2025.
vpmedia’s downloads are still being hosted at M4T also.

So, I did the impossible for someone who was a kid when video games were new.
I went back and played one of those neat old school flight sims we saw but could never grasp at the time. I’ve taken a header into Megafortress.
You know, it’s fun. It’s actually fun and holds up to this day to a respectable degree. The reason is because it’s more about managing the systems of the Old Dog than it is flying a fictional super B-52.
If you’ve got a SteamDeck or similar portable device, this could be a fun sim on the go.

Good choice, had that one on dosbox for decades now. Like you said, holds up pretty well. I still have never managed to finish a full campaign.
Never played it, but will need to look into it at some point. Those old classics are sometimes great gems.
Just be sure to have the manual in PDF or on hand.
The curse of classic copy protection strikes here; you have to transmit the right ident code or get shot down!

ERA ONE
they are marketing this as “the game Homeworld 3” should have been, so far pretty good, has all the standard homeworld stuff with the addition that you ca design the mothership, its an early access, and a bit bare bones (no campaign yet) but runs well looks nice, price is a touch steep £29.99 for early access (but who am I kidding …I am a DCS addict so £29 on early access is normal

Megafortress
Wow! I’ve never heard of this. I’ve read nearly all of the Dale brown books its based on though! I’m gonna have to look this one up
■■■■ yeah Megafortress. One of my favorite flight sims. So unique, so fun, super difficult. I finished the campaign back in the day and was so exhausted I somehow missed seeking out its expansion packs. I do plan to revisit this soon though. Just such a good sim and game.
That has to be the best copy protection idea ever. In many games you were forced to type in a word from the manual - a bit boring task. In Microprose sims you usually had to identify an aircraft or a vehicle, which for someone who already was interested in mlitary stuff was trivial (I didn’t had to use the manual for that). In Gunship 2000 you had to enter correct “GPS counter code” for your INS to work, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to use the planning map during the mission, but you still could attempt to fly it. But this one is brilliant - pirated a game? Your own air defense will bring you down!

Starflight had something similar. If you didn’t put in the code correctly, you could go out and fly around a bit, but then you’d be pulled over by the intergalactic police, and, if you still didn’t put in the correct code, it was game over, as you were arrested.
