You remember when “Valve stole Half Life 2 from Sierra?”
‘You mean I have to use a Launcher, to launch a software, to launch a game!!! OMG WORST IDEA EVER! LOLZ Steam will fail in a year…’
I wish I saved some of those thread.
Don’t get me wrong- there were loads of problems- in the beginning.
Hell Steam had problems for a decade, some might say it still has some problems but I still think it’s a good thing.
But honestly I believe that someone challenging Steam supremacy is good, Monopoly is always bad.
I couldn’t even get Steam to work early on. Had all the right ports open and everything; could never connect. As I didn’t get into the HL2 hype (my focus was IL2, Longbow 2, and LOMAC at the time), just shelved it and didn’t look back into it until a friend gifted me ArmA2 via Steam in '09. It magically worked fine then and I stuck with it.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say I preferred GoG, though. Epic and Origin feel too heavy handed – feels less about putting out a decent service and more about taking advantage of the customer. As neither storefront offers anything I really want nor can’t live without, I don’t tend to pay much mind to them. The only thing that got pushed aside was any future projects with the Unreal engine due to its requirement of using the Epic store, which I’d rather not have to deal with.
As most of the titles on Epic are timed exclusive, it’s easier to just wait if it’s interesting enough. As it stands, I’ve got two libraries of games on Steam and GoG that I haven’t even installed or played, and more often than not I find myself loading up DCS for my entertainment. So if Epic or EA were to offer Longbow 3 or similar, I’d probably break my hesitations.
I really liked doom 3. I understand its flaws but as a game it was awesome. Walking around in the dark with a flashlight out (before the pistol flashlight patch) and hearing an imp close by then seeing him light up as he fireballs you was intense. Great game.
Doom 2016 was gifted me by my wife before she went away for a weekend and I stayed up all of Friday night and went to bed Saturday afternoon after completing it. I couldn’t put it down.
I cant wait to though wolfenstein, doom, Heretic and Hexen with my boy.
Anybody going to give Uplay+ a go? I’m signing up the for the free trial month in September. I figure I can complete Far Cry: New Dawn during the month and then cancel. I guess this free month is good if you’re a dabbler and have the bandwidth allowance. Basically use the month as a demo month to see if you like any of the games and get them on the next big sale.
Yes, I enjoyed all the Doom games in their various flavors. I’m not sure if I would’ve enjoyed Medal of Doom or Doom of Duty or whatever that version they threw out before they made the 2016 version, but I have all Dooms from 1-2016 and all the Final/Ultimate/Totally Grody versions on Steam that I got on sales.
Of course if you get the Doom 3 BFG edition you get Doom 1 and 2 included in it, along with the D3 expansion, I think that’s a great deal.
As for Far Cry New Dawn, I played it through coop after playing FC5 coop. I liked them both quite a bit, although I think the pinnacle was FC4. FC3 introduced new game mechanics in the old FC1 setting and it was good, but FC4 had the right balance of setting, villain, and gameplay. Aside from the “if you want a wallet to hold more money you MUST kill this ultra rare yak and make it from its skin” mechanic.
Neither had I till recently. I’m currently working through hexen 2 as I hadn’t finished that one either as my Pentium 133 used to crash on the second area (egyptian) without fail.
I’m very keen to try this I watched a review of it and it looks right up my street. One liners. Over the top silly action. Build engine. I’m in! When it’s on sale lol
