Reverb g2 at half resolution crush Rift S!

I mean to be fair they both are fairly blurry in that pic. But I will say I’ve never thought the rift S to be blurry though. My main complaint with the Rift S is the washed out colors. The lighting appears to look way better in the G2.
C’mon there is a whole other scale in the dial in the G2 photo!
Seriously though, that difference in a blow up means a lot in normal size… (At least for 2D images… I know nothing about VR… Last headset I tried was the CV1 - and it was awesome!)
I’m just saying the rift S is really good. So for g2 to match that at HALF resolution says a lot!
I’m with @Gunnyhighway here…
I need to go into XP11 to check again, but I don’t think my Rift S is that blurry.
In fact, I think it held its own pretty well in this video, by Tyriel Wood. This is The Rift S vs. Index and G2 (at full res).
I haven’t watched the video from MRTV. Does he say what ’half resolution’ is in the G2?
Is it (2160/2)x(2160/2) or (2160x2160)/2?
Based on TW’s video I struggle to believe that the G2 at half res. would be better than the Rift S.
But I will soon be able to make up my own mind…
I don’t know about those through the lens shots.
Having had the Rift S, and currently using a Index, I’m having a very hard time recognizing what that screenshot shows…
@dachsdk I guess you mean the screenshot that I posted?
In what what way is it not recognizeable…?
Your answer leaves the reader hanging. Tell us some more.
Haha, yeah, I guess that was a bit vague.
I just meant that in your shot, the Rift S looks to be sharper than Index, and that has simply not been my experience.
So TTL videos, while giving a good hint of what to expect, are to be taken with a grain of salt I think.
I agree! TTL is really hard to get right.
And that’s the point as I think comparing MRTV and TW’s TTLshots gives the viewer different expectations…
And just to clarify my question about ’half res’ in the G2.
If they mean half vertical and half horizontal resolution, then the G2-half res is lower than the Rift S res. If they mean half the total pixel count, then G2-half is higher than the Rift S.
From the video it seems that he is using SteamVR 50% supersampling. So it should mean (2160x2160)/2 formula.
Makes sense.
The Rift S is 1280x1440 per screen.
The G2 is 2160x2160=4665600. Half of that is 2332800 which is more than the S’ 1843200.
So, I’d be suprised if the G2 @ half res didn’t look better than the S. But I don’t think that the MRTV TTL gauge shot represents what I see in my Rift S. But maybe the G2 shot is equally bad, compared to the actual experience…?
I think this is the case. I guess the point of the video is that you can drive G2 with lesser GPUs with satisfactory results. Still, in my opinion Reverb G1 image benefits even from 150% SteamVR SS in DCS, so running 50% SS is not a very good idea.
I think that judging aesthetics and overall clarity can be really hard on the blown up images, because, they all look kind of bad by principle… so how bad is bad and how bad is good… But the fact that the G2 can resolve the half steps of the gauge is a very compelling tell that it indeed has better resolving power…
Well, yes, the G2 has more than twice the pixels of the Rift S, so it should produce a better picture at half resolution
Reverb g2 half res should be 1440x1440 per eye… but then the image is upscaled to native res
Do you have a source for that?
2160x2160=4665600
Half of which is 2332800 and the sq.root of that again is 1527.
So G2 half res should be 1527x1527, if that’s how they calculate “half resolution”.
So I’m curious if you have seen some official info on this…?
I should hope so!
Would be rather dissapointing if the image was a small square with black borders, or something.
My G2 Pre-Order delivery has been pushed to October 12. Don’t know if this is a WAG or reflects a release date in europe.
Yes Maximilian answered my question about that in the comments section of his video about half res.
Your calculations appear correct anyway as 1527x1527 could be the half res with the supersampling value for lens distortion.
Anyway i am thinking of keeping my index for now.
I tried the first reverb (same res of the g2) and the performances appears worse then the index also if the reported res with default 100% supersampling value in the index is a little bit higher then the reverb 100%.
I think that the wmr bridge for steamvr take away some frame timing, or maybe it is just the hassle of having the need to have both windows mixed reality and steamvr running at the same time
Same here. While I would like that extra bit of resolution the G2 offers, I’m pretty happy with the Index as it is.
I’d really like to compare the sweet spot and FOV in particular, as the Index felt “freeing” for a lack of a better word, when I switched from the S.
Ok, but did he get that from HP, or was that just a resolution he tested?
The reason I ask is that I’m under the impression that ‘half res’ is going to be a mode of sorts. And that makes me think that HP will have a native software selection… But I haven’t found any real info on that.
Getting a G2 isn’t just about the resolution for me either. Manual IPD and sweet spot are the main reasons. I would probably have bought the Index if it weren’t for the lighthouse tracking. I prefer the camera tracking of the S for simplicity when setting up my SimBox.
