Yah, I hear you! It kinda felt like a step back, when putting up those light houses.
Admittedly the tracking is a bit better than Rift S, but not so much that it makes a real difference at least for my uses.
And the simpit can on occasion occlude the sensors, although it happens much less with the lighthouse system, than it did with the CV1 IR cams.
I don’t know from where he did take the info, but also the reverb g1 in mixed reality option it has a menu where to choose resolution (full or upscaled) but seems to not having effect in steamvr.
So I don’t know how it is achieved with this new headset.
Anyway look this video:
-
you can see the reported resolution of every headset during the test. Including reverb g2 at half res.
-
it is interesting that indeed the index at slightly higher render res then the reverb g2 (full res) performs better. This would come to my theory of higher overhead due to the software stack needed for it to run with steamvr.
Yeah, there’s an obvious performance drop in the Rift S when using Steam VR iso native Oculus rendering.
Speaking of a step back, I’ve just installed Track IR for MSFS2020…
I’m sooooo looking forward to getting VR support in that sim, hopefully it wont be too long after G2 release, that the rest of us peasants gets to enjoy it in full VR glory
Just received this email (on a Sunday no less) regarding my G2 pre-order. Email [email protected]
I am contacting you regarding your preorder #********for the HP Reverb G2 VR and the accompanying 2 year Service Net warranty. Unfortunately the warranty was listed in error and is not compatible with the HP Reverb. As such, it has been cancelled from your order – at this time we have no options for a service plan of any type for the VR, I’m sorry.
Rest assured your preorder for the Reverb unit is still intact within our system. We don’t have a firm ETA for shipment of the product at this time, the estimate is still fall 2020.
Pre-ordered on May 29
If you guys are worried about the hit of SteamVR, there is OpenComposite. I use it with the rift S when I play IL2 and xplane so I don’t have to also run SteamVR. Maybe an update for use with WMR headsets? Honestly I didn’t notice a performance hit, but I did experience issues where SteamVR would not launch the game etc.
I’m using it and while the FPS increase wasn’t huge, there was an improvement. But more importantly it also fixed the very jittery loading screens in IL-2.
Yeah…just got the same e-mail…we had the same order date May 29…
I use Open Composite as well (for Flying Circus) , and find a performance improvement over Steam VR . Wish an analogue was available for the G2 I plan to have soon !
Quick question, that is maybe answered amongst the 230 posts in this thread, and I missed it: have they talked about the G2 in the context of fresnels/'sweet spot" effect at all? Will the G2 still suffer this (based on previews/specs)?
The lenses are made by Valve and testers report a much improved sweetspot, over the G1.
Some of the pre-production reviewers report “edge-to-edge” (MRTV) but some others (I can’t recall his name) are less enthusiastic.
Sometimes I think it comes down to how good the person’s eyesight is.
I have very good eyes, and thus I’d rate every single one of those VR devices “poor. can see pixels”. The RiftS is the absolute minimum for me. Bad, but bearable.
While people who need glasses for reading might call the resolution good. In fact I know several who tried my Rift and asked why anyone would need better resolution than that. I will sell them my Rift as soon as I can buy a better one.
Edit: same goes for field of view. People who are used to wearing helmets (like motorcycle helmets or something), face masks, or glasses? They often don’t mind the FOV. At the same time I feel like having a bucket on my face, like a horse with blinkers.
It takes some time getting used to turning your head instead of moving your eyes. My mom says it is the same when you are getting used to glasses.
As with anything we perceive, it’s subjective.
For the reasons you state, and more. Some people seem to get a bit claustrofobic when they put on VR headsets, for instance. Others can’t stand the flickering light, even at 90Hz, because the light source is so close.
Try getting used to bifocals…!
When I got mine I was absolutely certain they must have mixed my order with someone elses!
But I remembered the opticians caution! Only wear them a little at the time, in the beginning. Don’t drive, or fly, with the glasses on the first few days.
And sure enough, after a few days they felt totally natural.
Some people say they can’t get over this obstacle and can’t wear bifocals.
We are all different…
I got my first pair of progressive lens glasses about 6 months ago, and I still haven’t fully adjusted to them.
Or varifocals. Needed for the big flightdeck on the SAAB
Same for my parents. Falling on the stairs seems to be pretty easy with those.
Are those the three level glasses with a near focal field at the top and bottom?
I’ve heard of pilots using glasses with a T shaped near focal field too…
