HP Reverb G2

I dunno either. Would it be something like where too bright an image stays on the screen too long…so you’d maybe get some smearing or something? Maybe? So they lowered persistence without having to dim things? I dunno.

The power cord part is interesting. Doesn’t bother me as a seated gamer…but if you were one of those guys that climbs around a room like a monkey maybe it is an issue?

imho that is bad!

This was the one Glaring Bad thing I saw. My power consumption is getting to be of concern.
Persistance? What the bleepy-di-bleep? They just come up with stuff. An exponation would have been nice.

First I thought this was a joke: “Improvements”.

I just wish the power cord is not separate to display cord. Also, more power consumption means more heat in the headset. I thought the HMD was supposed to be fine according to Sebastian already without “improvements”.

Well, I still hope for the best, but some doubts are beginning to creep in.

Edit: Come to think of it, the persistence could mean the smearing that is visible in dark scenes. For example in DCS night missions.

So now ill have a data AND an electrical cord hanging off my head? NOT COOL MAN

Maybe they device a cord that consists of two cords stuck together. Wait, this sounds too familiar. :sob:

For room scale VR, sure.
For sitting down cockpit use, if it reduces the USB power demand, I see it as a positive change.

Considering the issues the G1 had with blackouts and power supply, I think this is an imporvement.

HP supposedly acknowledged the bulky cable on the current Reverb and gave the impression that the G2 would have a thinner cable. But this may no longer be the case. ? Not a deal breaker for me. The current cable isn’t terrible. There are DIY work-arounds if you are creative.

I guess we’ll see how it turns out.
It could be that it requires just a little bit more juice than what a USB port can deliver and that the cable isn’t that big…
Did I read the rest of the info correctly they have started shipping, so we’ll know soon enough

Does this mean it has a video cable, a usb, and a power cord? Or just a power cord and video cable?

Snip the red wire. Wait…wait…I meant the blue one…or was it the amaranth one? (Amaranth?)

From the HP Reverb dude over on Reddit:

Are there two cables running from the headset now, one with Display Port/USB-C and one with power?

okay. this would be easier if i could paste an image in here. from the headset a cable travels 5 meters to a little box. that box has two 1 meter cables that come out of it (displayport and USB). that little box also has power input, you will use a 45W notebook charger that comes in the box, plug that into the wall and the barrel end into the little box.

Are you re-purposing the ubiquitous standard HP laptop charger?

this is correct. we are using a standard 45W hp laptop charger that terminates in a barrel

Does this mean the backpack is no longer compatible with G2?

It works just fine.

If it now requires a direct connection to an outlet, does Reverb G2 no longer have compatibility with HP VR Backpacks?

It will work. I need to confirm but I believe the cable with have MiniDP and two USB ends for data and power.

So the headset won’t work just over USB-C at all?

We will not do power over USB-C at all. You must use the included power adapter. the headset will require 3 things plugged in to work: USB, Displayport, and power

I don’t care if I need to run an extra cable to my computer just for power, but I need to be able to use the G2 with just a PC. How is that going to work?

The G2 cable will connect to DP and USB, and the AC adapter plugs into the slip-box that is on the G2 cable. So if you want to use JUST a PC with no external power, that cannot be done. This is because of the length of the cable. External power was found to be more reliable than a USB connection.

Can you expand on how the HP VR backpacks will work? Will the Reverb G2 come with the power adapter cable needed to use the Backpack G2 DC out port?

Reverb G2 will come with a short cable that has DP adn two USB connectors for data and power. AC not required. (Why? Because it’s short. :stuck_out_tongue: The long cable requires the power because of it’s length.)

Any chance there will be a double-USB solution for those who don’t want to/can’t use a wall wart for one reason or another?

Not at present, as the length of the cable is the need for dedicated AC.
