HP Reverb G2

@miRage METAR raw report: KCLT 131652Z 00000KT 10SM BKN013 18/14 A3006 RMK AO2 SLP174 T01830144.

Still pretty warm over there, isn’t it?

I guess Beach is going to run his usual torture routine and shelf the package for two months, posting weekly pictures of the untouched box…

Mine was delivered today too…. I should be able to try it out on Wednesday.

That’s just cruel.

Chris famously sat on his Rift CV1 for what seemed like weeks before he finally tried it.:rofl:.

The eagle has landed at chaos base. Trying to convince family to go to bed early, but brother Rick is into both my bourbon and a barrel aged stout. He is my baby brother.

Then the headset should wait. What I wouldn’t give to have a beer or glass of Single Malt with my brother Neil.

My house guests are here for another night, and @PaulRix, you are correct Sir, I should enjoy the time with my brother as he lives 5 1/2 hour drive away. Therefore, he must embrace the Hornet in VR

Very brief thoughts after 30 minutes in DCS Hornet on Supercarrier…
Since my previous headset is a gen 1 Reverb, connecting the gen 2 was pretty much plug-n-play once I figured out how to connect the cables. The power supply is fairly unobtrusive, since it connects near your PC and therefore closer to an outlet. The remaining cord that runs to the headset is much thinner and lighter, albeit much longer, than the gen 1 dinosaur tail.

One gotcha that I discovered was the Reverb G2 is not happy plugging into a red USB port from my ASUS mobo. It is USB C and thankfully, an adapter is supplied, so connecting to USB 3.1 (blue) is a piece of cake. It is happy with blue.

The headset is very high quality and feels slightly heavier than gen 1. It would have to be, since there is more hardware. It is very comfortable and the sound is a bit better without the pads resting on your ears.

The IPD adjustment works fine, although in my case it is not as beneficial as it is for others, since one eye is slightly wider than the other. I guess that all of the football I played growing up has made my skull asymmetrical

For all of the accolades the G2 has received about the image, I would say that in my case, and there is a big caveat, that the image is more evolutionary than revolutionary improved. That’s probably because of 2 reasons. One has to be the very recent improvements to the G1 image quality, and the other is that I don’t have corrective lens inserts that I began using with the G1 after @BeachAV8R’s recommendation (or was it a do not buy?). Anyway, my initial impression is somewhat tainted and another point of view will be appreciated. I do notice an improvement in “sweet spot” and brightness.

More impressions on the way time permitting.

Thanks @chipwich. Mine is supposed to be on or above the Atlantic eastbound. My DCS file structure problems are hopefully being sorted as I type thanks to Alexandr @ ED so looking forward to my first VRheadset.

I wouldn’t expect it to be that much better than the G1. The resolution is the same, after all. How’s the sound and tracking?

I’ve been trying the G2 out for about 30 minutes so far.
I am also going to have to wait for inserts to see the G2 at it’s best, but even without them, the picture is clearer, the colors are better and performance seems similar to the G1, sound seems better as well. Still messing with the tracking.
Apparently there is a bug in Steam VR that configures the G2 at 100% resolution too high (3100 or so), so I did adjust that down to as close to native resolution 2160 as possible. Besides that all my settings are the same as the G1.
Very happy with them so far.

Any recommendations on where to get insert lenses for the G2?

I used vr optician for lens inserts for the Reverb G1 and am happy with them. https://vroptician.com/

I would second that. They recommend following their Twitter feed for G2 release.

And do you notice it with a “wow” or rather a “yeah… cool”?

My impressions so far:

The box is firm and appears quite resistant to blunt object trauma. The coffee colored box strikes just the right mix of modern and mysterious while the clear, tamper evident tape radiates a warmth that accompanies security. Though not quite a perfect cube, the container has an engineered symmetry that draws the eye and holds your attention as you follow the perpendicular lines. The shipping label font can only be described as bold and functional…hinting at a futuristic possibility while retaining the comfort of high readability.

A slight taste of the box reveals complex flavors that include a pulpy bitterness that is masked slightly by highlights of tape resin and glue binder. Completing the melody is the slightly metallic bite that can only come from a UPS loading belt…a smoky blend of light oil and a misting of worn rubber.

Lifting the box…it feels weighty in hand…but is of dimensions that allow for a full embrace. One imagines they could heft this box upon a shoulder and scale a small hillock without getting winded.

In not so many words - the box is a fine specimen…worthy of high praise and admiration.

I’m going to hold off quantifying image quality until I get my inserts. Although my vision is not that bad, in the last year I’ve noticed that my minimum focus point is moving out ever so gradually beyond 2 meters that seems to be the de facto standard among headset manufacturers. And when first used them with the G1, the image improved more than I expected.
