HP Reverb G2

From what I’ve read recently you have it set correctly; there’s bug in SVR I guess so you should set it to 50%. I believe the VR thing in DCS, when you get there, is a multiplier of what you have here, so 1.0 in DCS.

I have SteamVR Home set to Off in an effort to gain a few FPS. No evidence that it does, but can’t hurt.

Put in a few hours so far on mine. Puuurdy cool. Coming from a G1 as well.

Some observations:

The G2 is a tad heavier than the G1. 500g/1.1 lbs vs 550g/1.2 lbs.

The cable to/from the HMD is much thinner and less intrusive than the G1.

Colors are brighter and more vivid. Overall clarity is improved. I’m still fiddling with SteamVR settings.

Tracking seems improved with 4 cameras vs 2. Still noticing some rare hiccups. Could be my immediate surroundings.

The mechanical IPD adjustment is a nice touch. Although, correct me if I’m wrong, the available range is less than the G1. I’m on the narrow side. 62ish mm.

It’s running warmer than the G1. Hopefully it’s “normal”. I havent put it through a 2-3 hour session on Blue Flag or Through the Inferno, yet.

Audio. Interesting design. But I like having the option of using earbuds through a 3.5 mm jack like the G1.

The G2 faceplate is much easier to remove and manage than the G1 which helps with cleaning.

My specs are 2080Ti, i9 9900KS, 64GB, M.2

The G2 cable is about 4 ft longer than the G1. Yardstick for reference.

I’m desperate to try one of these. Got yours yet @Scoop?

I’m possibly off to Ireland and then schiphol shortly with an engine cowl and part of a landing gear for a CRJ which if I get the job I’ll be able to afford to upgrade my “office pc” so wish me luck

Not yet. Hopefully left the states on the 13th. Did it fly or is it on a slow boat?

I’m not finding that at all Chaz. In fact, I was going to comment how much cooler it runs. I’ve been flying the Hornet the last 3 nights 2 to 3 hours and have not been aware of the heat. I have my SVR global resolution set at 50%, which is in actuality %100 native, SS enabled, and DCS PD at 1.0. We have similar system specs. VR preset with the addition of MSAA 2X.

Spent a bit more time with the G2 today and DCS World. It is a really stunning experience…better for slightly better sweet spot for sure, but I feel like the brightness and color saturation are better too. I think with my G1 I was using a Gamma setting of 2.2 in DCS World and now I’m finding 1.9 is more comfortable. Using pretty much high-medium/high settings for everything and getting fluid FPS with 50% in SteamSS and 1.2 pixel density in DCS World. I also used the IPD setting of 66 in DCS World which seemed to give me the best picture presentation (does not necessarily match the IPD of the headset…I found you just have to change the value until things look the best).

Flew around in the Huey a bit and loved every second of it. All panels and gauges are crisp and clear…readable from the default head position in the cockpit without any leaning in. I’m still wearing my tiny glasses (apparently my head was way smaller two decades ago) because they fit in the G2 eye box well, don’t threaten to scratch the lenses, and also are of the right prescription to give good results. I will try contact lenses tomorrow to see how the headset feels without glasses…I’m sure it will feel better, but my visual acuity with contacts is not as good as with glasses. I’ll order inserts as soon as I can.

Pics taken with my iPhone 6 crammed in as far as I can get it into the eye box. Obviously the sweet spot is bigger and acuity better with the naked eye.

Pretty amazed once again at how awesome the Hornet is with the Super Carrier module. Pretty bad-ass that we have such a cool thing to mess around with.

Thanks @BeachAV8R

I believe in DCS IPD is a different animal; it’s a scaling factor. Makes the cockpit larger/smaller, or you ‘feel’ like you are larger/smaller in relation to it.

That will be nice. However, being VERY far-sighted myself (I can see a redfish tailing at a 1/4 mile but need glasses to tie knots!) the distant object clarity would be nice, assuming the G2 helps with that.

Those are some bold settings, boss. :cold_sweat: I’m running terrain textures LOW, MSAA 2X, Pre load radius maxed. My anisotropic is 8x though. Although I find myself on busy-ish multiplayer servers like Blue Flag and Through the Inferno. Hollo Pointe as well.

As for Steam VR, under per application video settings, are you running with motion smoothing or legacy reprojection on? I’ve enabled motion smoothing- fps will go higher than 45 without smoothing, but it’s just jittery when looking around. With motion smoothing on, it’s capped at a butter 45fps. (Althought there are people that swear that 45fps is a slide show. ) When at altitude, say above 20k, I see it teasing with 60-90 fps. really depends on the map, situation, objects, multiplayer, etc.

I’ve got a warm spot on the top left side where the cable connects to the HMD. Everywhere else is cool.

Yeah, I suddenly remembered that I had a new tiny pair (titanium transitions) that I had made just before Claudia left Coca-Cola, hence still had vision coverage. They work really well in the G2 if I tilt the halo up, put the goggles over my eyes, then rotate the halo down into position. Probably opposite of how they were designed, which is to keep the halo on, then swing up the goggles as needed. Regardless, I’ll order the lens inserts as well.

Good to know. Need to tinker with that a bit.

Isn’t it though. I can’t imagine carrier ops with a clear deck now. If we could control pilot gestures/hand signals, that would take it to the next level. We should also mention VAICOM Pro. Getting fairly addicted to that as well.

Great info. I’m pretty much over the jittery objects near the jet.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the shimmering? The airfields on the Syria map are amazing, but the shimmering is really a buzz kill. I’ve tried a bunch of different settings, but no joy.

What is your DCS MSAA setting? 2x should get rid of most, if not all, of the shimmer. Also, if you have an Nvidia card, go to your Nvidia control panel. Under the DCS profile, Antialiasing - Mode should be application controlled. A while back, I had enhance override with 2x, and found it was over anti-aliasing causing shimmering and more jaggies. So either set AA in the game or Nvidia panel, but not both. Seems to be a DCS thing.

I got back from recurrent training this evening and my G2 was waiting for me… I still have some tweaking to do, and I haven’t managed to get reprojection working yet. Even so, coming from the Rift S, which I liked a lot apart from not having mechanical IPD adjustment…Holy #!@# (insert expletive of your choice) . The G2 blows it out of the water when it comes to clarity and pretty much a total lack of SDE. Must head to bed now!

Yeah, sure… But how is the Viggen? That’s what everybody wants to know.
Can you read the caution panel?

And… can you read the default F-14 cockpit labels?

This is the thing that holds me back from VR. I am not sure if I will be ok with 45fps. 60-90fps all the time would be great.

In the same price park I can see as an alternative 120Hz! 55" 4k pancake OLED TV… I guess I am on the edge… of being not too old, but still quite old already

You early adopters, how about IL2 BOX / XP11? What performance you get there? thx

Congrats Paul! Welcome to the Reverb club.

Short answer is yes. But to be honest, some of the lettering is so faded, you can barely read it even when leaning it. However, I use the clean cockpit mod.

Well, the high temperature above the left eye where the cable connects is not normal. Spoke to HP tech. TLDR. They’re sending out a new headset. (Are there any new ones currently available? :man_shrugging: Might be a wait.) In the meantime, my headset runs fine. But the potential long term damage is concerning- as we all know heat and electronics aren’t always the best of friends. Might be a bad cable. Who knows.

The Norwegian retailer where I pre-ordered my G2 just changed their estimate from today until February…!

I hate everybody.
