HP Reverb G2

I meant to give the O+ VR Covers face pad a whirl today with the G2, but I ran out of time. Having both kids at home all day with distance learning is…hilariously challenging. I love that I get to spend more time with them between bouts of wanting to kick them out into the cold. I propose we double all salaries for educators…because they are insanely useful to this world and I have never appreciated them more.

Tomorrow! Reverb G2 face cushion testing. Yes!

Too Soon?
But seriously, why? I have no light leak…

Thanks for this suggestion. All is set up as it should be.

Yes, and that is what confuses me. The G1 was already the same in this regard. Maybe my problem is owning the G1 in the first place?

The first tests I did and where I actually spotted the issues were with the suggested resolution of about 118%. But I can see a logic in what you are saying. Now I am at some 60% and probably this adds to the distortion out of center. But OK, I will fiddle with the resolution as a function of performance. I am not sure whether my hard working 2080ti would not catch fire if asked to process so many pixels

Yeah, you are right. I already cooled down (shooting down some 109s in Il2 GB yesterday night helped).

I can totally see that as an issue, yes. The difference between G1 and G2 isn’t exactly earth shattering… Heck, moving from the RiftS to the G2 wasn’t that impressive. Now, as I have mentioned above, if I had a 3090 the G2 would probably look better…

Bring your G2 over after tea and we can test it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That’s its job man . I’ve now overclocked my 2080ti, thanks to some helpful Mudspikers, and getting 10 more fps in DCS. fpsVR is now reporting ~52 fps to ~62 fps.

But the fan on my GPU kicks in about once a minute with a vengeance. Since the G2 has off ear headphones, it’s somewhat annoying.

Guess who’s having his hard weeks of slugging through the sleet and mud and cold rewarded with a DHL tracking number?

yeee-ah boiiii! C’est moi!

That should be fixable by setting an appropriate custom fan profile. Can be done right in MSI Afterburner. Just make sure the fan speed is high enough at the high temperatures so you don’t get thermal throttling (typically at 85 °C) and then to avoid the ‘bursts’ of the fans, avoid steep slopes and especially hard kinks around the temperatures where you are at with DCS

OK. So I semi-tried this mod tonight with my G2. By “semi” I mean I did not go ahead and tape the Velcro receiver patches to the inside of the headset, but after just jamming the VR Covers O+ mask in there (after removing the default G2 mask), I DO feel it will be worth it for the slight increase in FOV, but moreso for the comfort of the VR Covers very soft and pliable mask. I did not notice any real drawback to the nose cover being gone simply because the VR Covers bottom basically forms its own sort of nose cover due to its length.

I put my contact lenses in for this experiment since I didn’t want to scratch my lenses. I did notice a slight increase in FOV - I measured this by first using the default G2 face cushion and jumping into the Steam Cliff House and did not move…and stared at the “games” board in front of me. In the default position and default G2 face cushion, my FOV basicaly just barely was outside of the four corners of the games board in front of me. After swapping out with the VR Covers, there was a bit more gap outside of the corners…implying a greater FOV.

Of course, you don’t need the VR Cover to see exactly what the MRTV guy is talking about…just take your faceplate off and put the headset on…you can easily see that your eyes can get closer to the lenses (glasses wearers probably should not do this). With NO cushion at all, the FOV is dramatically increased…to the point where you can see the rectangular dimensions of the displays…but that probably wouldn’t even bother me. So I could see a market for an even thinner version of the VR Cover…perhaps with some gel or just a slightly thinner cushioning than the O+ VR Cover.

Give it a whirl…take your faceplate off and check it out.

I WILL be modding my G2 with the Velcro attachment points and switch to the VR Cover though…I do think it is more comfortable.

:+1:

Unfortunately, I have to wait for my next eye doctor appointment (mid January) before I can order custom inserts. Definitely going to be doing that too…

Good news. I have the “male” and “female” Velcro tape in my tool box. Commencing the operation…

Yeah, when MRTV spit that out I thought he was being a little optimistic…but maybe not? (finished reading your post)

I’ve wondered: I am VERY far-sighted. I wonder if I’d even notice any clarity up close in the cockpit. I’m sure I would yes, but it’s the long distance clarity that I’m interested in. Higher rez should help with AA too I’m sure.

So here is my mod in action. Sticky backed Velcro strips arranged in the perimeter of the faceplate receiver…

Moosh the VR Cover in there. Obviously, the more Velcro you have in there, probably the less chance of gaps forming…but once the headset is on it fully seats itself anyway. As you can see, the ends of the VR Cover converge enough to make a nosepiece. I’m not sure how this will feel after hours of gameplay…but you can widen it out a bit by simply mushing the sides more (un-Velcroing them and moving them wider and re-Velcroing them)… I’ll have to test for light leak in the morning during daylight hours.

Also moved my headband thingy over from the O+…takes some of the pressure from the strap off your head…

I’m not sure if I’m sold yet on the mod. I don’t really think it offers a dramatic increase in FOV so much as a bit more comfort. But that comfort might come at the cost of heat since the VR Cover is softer and actually does seem to seal a bit better. Given that the G2 does put of a bit more heat than the G1 (in that upper left corner, as has been mentioned)…it does feel a bit warmer in there. I really don’t like wearing contact lenses since I don’t see as well with them as opposed to good prescription lenses.

I tried my lowest profile, John Lennon-esque round glasses and they just barely cram in there (width wise)…so this mod significantly reduces the space in the eye box for glasses…but I held them in place as I removed the headset and was happy to see at least a half an inch of clearance from the glasses to the lenses of the G2…so not much worry on scratching the lenses. It makes me even more ready to get WidmoVR inserts or whoever is making them though…

So after playing about an hour of DCS World - I honestly think I prefer the original face cover over the VR Cover one…at least while I’m wearing glasses. There is more airflow though the eyebox with the original cover…it feels cooler…and doesn’t crowd my eyeglasses. Once I get the lens inserts for the G2 I will revisit it…but for now…I think stock is best.

Thanks for this check. I have done exactly that - just removing the faceplate and yeah, the FOV is a bit better.

So I would not be surprised if VR Cover introduced a custom G2 faceplate. I would definitely be in the market for it :+1:

I am going to do a horrible botch job with an old t shirt, some foam and velcro. DIY.

You guys unplugging your G2 when you aren’t using it? I’m not using mine after booting up my computer this morning…and it isn’t “on”…but it is warm. Wondering if it is better to just keep it unplugged until I’m ready to don it…

I unplug mine when not in use.

I would have sworn it said to do that in something official, as I recall being surprised that it was a recommendation.

I definitely notice some fairly significant God’s Rays at the 10,2,4, and 8 position. Is this pretty much standard?

Even my O+ gets warm if I forget to unplug. I always unplug when not flying the virtrual skies. Not sure what’s correct however.
