HP Reverb G2

Well I had just chatted with HP and they are going to send out a new cable 2 day. Support in this company is great.

Tech support just asked a few question and decided to send me a new cable well at least I hope that is what they are sending me as I did not ask what the part they are sending was hehe…

Stupid 7-14 error. hopefully when I get the new cable it will be a thing of the past…

It’s been 15 days since I got my two business day confirmation.

Let us know how it goes …

Well If I get the cable I will let you know hopefully it will not be that long. Did they say it was backordered or something Elby?

Sent to me a couple days ago …

yes I got the backorder email the other day …sucks…

I finnally got my G2 working. This was the second cable I ordered from HP. Its the Rev 2 and it worked. Could not believe it when the headset came to life.
DCS looked beautiful but Studerring big time. Its still way better than the Odyssey I’ve had to use for a while now.
Let’s see what a new driver can do…

:+1: My O+ served me well [enough] for several years. The G2 visuals are sharper and the performance is about the same, though that may just be the maturation of the software (DCS itself and WMR, SteamVR, etc) over time. Had the G2 for about 6 months now and, knock on wood, no issues with the cable. I did immediately strap it down so it wouldn’t move. Or I just got lucky.

I must say, performance is subjective. But the clarity and sharpness are for sure in favor of the G2.
Performance is better w the O+. If i turn on the settings to 200% on the O+ it still runs good.
Its not the same with the G2 but ironically the G2 looks better. Its clear and sharper. I had to turn it down to 150%
BTW im talking about turning up the Per App settings. In game settings are pretty high with both.
Im finnally running my G2 with my new 3080ti. Yay!

Running the G2 at 50% in Steam VR is close to its native resolution. 100% has oversampling to allow for distortion correction. Do you feel there is any visual advantage in using 150%?

Im no expert… im usually listening when this comes up.
Someone posted run it at 200%. I tried w the O+ and it worked. The G2 didn’t like it (stuttering) so I put it at 150. In missions with lots of objects I may have to scale it back. I will try 100 tonight and see if it detracts from my experience or if it provides better performance.

Oversampling is usually to compensate for lower resolutions. The headset can’t show you any better than its native resolution, of course, but the upsampling acts as a kind of antialiasing and provides a better image. Up to a certain point, that is.
The G2 has a higher resolution so you don’t really need that much upsampling. But definitely play around with the resolution settings. Like I mentioned before, about 50% in Steam VR resolution equals the G2 native resolution of 2160x2160, or close enough. Anything above this is upsampling, and the G2 (or all headsets) need some degree of upsampling as the image is stretched and curved differently due to the lenses. This is why Steam VR recommends a higher resolution as 100% on the G2.

@Maico in short, 200% on O+ is similar to 100% on Reverb G2.
100% on Reverb G2 is about 3000x3000 pixels per eye. That is already a lot and you really don’t need more.
Most people here run something between 50 and 100% on the G2.
I went from 160% on Odyssey to 70% on Reverb G2 and have a much much better picture.

I would recommend you try something between 50 and 100% and see where your sweet spot is.

I can confirm all the above @Maico

I run SteamVR at 60 SS (mainly DCS and Il2) and OpenXR at 80 (MSFS).

All that on a 2080ti.

In DCS I have my “Black Death” test. For you who remember IL2 Sturmovik… In DCS its the F5-E Nevada free flight mission. I can tell you now, its never looked as good as it did last night. Also played a SEAD and the missile trails and explosions were so much easier to track.
But as I may need more performance I will try to run VR at 100%.
We are talking about Resolution per Application, right?

Yes. You can set the general Steam VR res, but that will affect all games. Better to use the per application setting.

This totally makes sense. Thats why the G2 was choking at 200% and the O+ was ok.

@Troll Thanks ill be home testing soon!!!

Well for my setup basically a decent CPU wirth an older 1080GTX I can only run the G2 @ 25% with mostly low settings in DCS…

I know it is supposed to be run at 100% but most times that is just way to high and does not mean you can… most users problems is this they just run the G2 too high a percentage and it chokes their PC…

Intensive testing last night. So I had lost the new key sequence for showing FPS. (Rt Ctrl+Pause) At 150% I was only getting 30 to 45 fps. So I reduced the Per Application to 100%. I was still getting 45 albeit solid but I wanted more. Turned off Motion Smoothing then I was able to achieve 60 fps. Today I will play with showdows…

I run MSI 6700 XT X2 12gb OC and reverb 2G now , i find that steam vr 75% and dcs pd 1.0 + msaa x2 is quite fine. Much better performance than my old 1080TI

Also reshadeVR in use to get that dcs grey haze off and nice bump for clarity

9600K oC to 4,7ghz and 24gb DDR4 3200mhz

Anyone else here love the G2’s speakers? Usually the first thing I do with a VR headset is remove them and wear a virtual 7.1 surround headset but I’m having a hard time doing that with the G2 because the audio is so exceptional! :+1:
