First PvP Dogfights on SoW, got shot down once and nailed a Bf109 (flying a Thunderbolt). I am finally able to properly aim the guns. It’s amazing
It is, isn’t it
Now fix those insane steamVR settings you have. 1.0 and 100% is a good start. You really don’t need to push steam VR past 100% with the G2.
Nah, I like it that way. Looks really good and still runs reasonably smooth
Agreed. Likely be another generation (or 2?) before we have the resolution.
I notice it is easier to spot an aircraft - seeing ‘the dot’ earlier - than on the monitor, but depending on the angle (planform, nose-on, side, etc) it’s harder to ID it. I do use the VR Zoom feature (General input tab) and map that to a button on my throttle.
Welcome to VR. You might find AR easier too. I still love that “whoa” moment under certain circumstances: right time of day [lighting], situated such that I’m looking down through a break in the upper layer of clouds (with terrain shadows on), etc.
Now for about 60 more degrees FOV, at this resolution. I can dream.
We would also need proper high end lens assemblies but that would drive up the price a lot I imagine. There’s a reason lenses with corrective elements such as aspherical lens elements etc. cost upwards of 1500€. Both my most expensive lenses feature pretty insane optical designs and are upwards of 2000€ new.
Fresnel lenses won’t do the job
I envy your enthusiasm guys, really. I cant deny that it was something else looking into the virtual world via headset but for me it was more ‘wow’ moment than ‘WOOOOW’ moment
I am in the process of deciding whether to adopt the VR for good or not. I am doing the same flights in VR and on pancake 4k and trying to find some ground for good arguments.
I’m kind of surprised you are not totally smitten with VR seeing as it completely transforms the helicopter experience. There are definitely negative aspects to it though. After being able to jump in and out of VR at will in MSFS and XP11, I find DCS to be a real pain in VR now (because you either load the sim in VR, or 2D)…the same for IL2. The only time I want to be in VR is when I am sat in the cockpit and even then, there are times where it is useful to jump out into 2D.
Well I do agree that graphically and performance wise there is a lot of room for improvement but the feeling of being in the aircraft is just amazing. As @PaulRix mentioned, helicopters are an absolute dream to fly in VR and I am willing to sacrifice a lot of graphical fidelity for that effect. I am not going to fly VR exclusively but when flying helicopters or warbirds I definitely prefer VR
That’s the ‘problem’ with recommending VR to anyone. It’s so incredibly subjective and it’s definitely not for everybody…
There are a lot of advantages to 2D. I love using physical controllers and not just HOTAS’. In fact, I’d love to build a real sized cockpit with a wrap around screen and projectors… But I don’t have the space for it. VR is very demanding, hardware-wise and I spend a lot more time troubleshooting and tinkering with settings, than I did pre-VR. I guess we all have different expectations and persistence.
my problem spreads to more levels I would say
I am quite used to the in-flight motions and the lack of it made me instantly sick in small helos like Schweizer S300 in XP. but its getting better. my brain I guess is learning that the almost same visual experience can happen even without the motions you can imagine, and mr. @smokinhole can confirm, that in small helos you experience constant movement in all posible directions.
its OKish in bigger helos and bigger planes in VR for now.
and I completely agree that for flight sims it would be perfect if just the cockpit part could be in VR with the menus staying 2D.
now when I do the same short flights in VR and 4K I can appreciate the great feeling of beeing there in the cockpit. and surely the lack of graphical fidelity in VR is acceptable to be traded just for that experience.
my other issue is the jitter in tracking of pimax hs with lighthouse tracking.
I would speculate that for some the G2 with troublesome cable from begining could have presented similar deterioration of the experience.
now I am trying to find the enthusiast in me to stick with the VR for the coming future
I am very happy that I have no problems with motion sickness whatsoever. That was a huge relieve. And the tracking of the G2 feels very smooth.
I have to use the USB-C to USB-A adapter because the USB-C port won’t work (x570 mobo), but it instandly worked when I plugged it into a USB-A 3.1 port.
For everything that requires to be outside the virtual cockpit like playing as a navigator in the Mossie, teaching someone a module etc. I will still use TrackIR of course. There are certainly situations where it’s not feasable to fly VR but whenever it is I will be flying in VR , no question about it.
sure, because its actually none-motion sickness (sickness caused by the lack of motion)
Hehe, you are right of course but you know what I mean
Yesterday the “Microsoft HoloLens” driver got updated. I noticed smoother tracking, especially on things that were already hella fast on my box, such as a nevada 2v2 dogfight or Il-2 BoX.
Does this update automatically, or do I need to do something…?
Nice!
Was the update part of a regular Windows 10 update?
I found this online:
- In Windows 10, versions 1809 and newer, and Windows 11: Mixed Reality Portal is updated via the Microsoft Store app. More information can be found on the Get Mixed Reality Portal page.
It came to me in windows update. So should be automatic? I clicked mine.
It depends on the update settings in the MS Store on your computer I guess.
Been traveling for quite a while but when I plugged in last evening and launched my custom COIN mission in Syria (Viper) things seemed smoother, much less stutter (low level, fast, looking left/right). FPS about the same, just smoother.
I’ve no idea what piece of the puzzle was responsible but, well, I’m not going to touch anything for fear I’ll mess it up
After a long break from VR I fired up my G2 a few days ago to see how DCS is with 2.7.7. I have everything working great except sometimes when I start DCS I get the cross eyed problem or loss of 6DOF. I’m not sure what fixes it but normally after a series of reboots, replugging, restarting VR apps etc. it will start working again.
I tried the cross eye debug tool once, corrected it and saved the settings. The next time I started DCS it was messed up again so I had to reset the alignment back to default and then it was working again.
It’s so frustrating that DCS can be so great and so terrible in VR at the same time.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? The G2 is fine in any other game I’ve tried.
