HP Reverb Redux

I wish I could find the post that has the serial number lots and whether they are old lots or new lots. There is a user on Reddit that is a super good contact…he works for HP and has the gouge on everything. If you run into any issues, I highly recommend the guy:

Actually according to him, the units run in serial number format:

xxx9xxxxxx

If the number after the 9 is anything greater than 30, then apparently that is the 2nd generation Reverb.

For instance mine is XXX932XXXX…which is 2nd generation. Had it been XXX928XXXX, that would be bad since it is first gen and may have the flickering and heating issues. Good luck!

It is worth mentioning though that some of the serials with earlier numbers than 30 did get reworked…for instance 925Z units had the guts replaced and apparently work fine. So there’s that.

Mine is from the 925Z series (arrived with the clip for connectors) and all is OK so far (knock knock on wood).

Good luck!

I would argue they are already there in terms of horsepower and Vram needed. The problem with DCS is in its inefficiency in CPU use. You could have a 3080 TI and the improvement will be probably be minimal. If DCS would allow for the proper use of all these CPU cores laying around, performance would skyrocket.

Yeah, getting a referb unit (heh, a referb reverb) is always a gamble, but it’ll be easy to check out and see (and return). Plus don’t really have much other choice. In HP Canada it’s listed at $844 plus tax and out of stock for months now, so $580 CDN is an ok deal.

The 3rd party 4 year warranty (it was about $50) will be interesting, as I never do that normally. I can also refund/cancel that if a prior recall series does turn up.

Well, not to be…

…but this endeavour has a reasonable chance of failure. In full Debbie mode:

  • It might not ship, as they don’t have one or the price was incorrect. I noticed they put the price up by $75 after I ordered.

  • It might be in bad condition, as the ‘as new’ might mean ‘all the bits we found fitted back in this generic box we have, cool’.

  • It might be from the initial bad HP run and have a bad cable and flickering panels.

  • I might not like it.

I’m just in the mindset that it was a lucky opportunity to find one, so you never know. I’ll be pretty shocked if it works out, but nothing ventured, nothing gained…

Your reasoning is flawless, as always… And as long as you can return it, it’s not a problem. I wish you luck though.
I really want to hear your opinion of it.

Reverb finally arrived today after a little shipping debacle with Fed Ex yesterday. Downside is even though I had expected and wanted to try it out all weekend I’m now too tired to do so as I’ve spent the day installing floor molding through my downstairs. Tomorrow after work will hopefully be the time…

I would just leave it in the box and stare longingly at it for a week or two.

Indeed, that is what you would do Chris… :face_with_monocle:

Be prepared to spend some time tinkering with the settings to get the best combo of performance and visual quality. I’ve had my Reverb for two weeks and I’ve just gotten to the point where I think I’m done messing with it. You’ll find a lot of posts on the various forums where guys say this or that is the best settings but you really have to spend the time and find out what works best for your system and personal preference.

Looking forward to hearing some more opinions of the reverb.

Perhaps in the meantime I should do a review of my shoes or something

Well, it shipped. Delivery date is for Jan 10th now, although Fedex shows the 13th. I message’d the people supplying it on why the 2 day delivery was now turning into a week (since I paid for it) and they explained that it was actually a mistake that it was offered on Amazon Canada, but would honor it anyway. Explains the price being wrong, plus now they have to deal with the beaver pelts and shiny beads we use as currency up here. :snowman:

I believe that can be grounds for revocation of all trade and security arrangements between our two countries. Time to start building that Northern Border Wall boys…I think we should make it out of snow. Yes, yes, it will melt in the Spring, but hear me out…we could use the fresh water down in the Rio Grande to expand the ferocity of our moat.

So I’ve given the new Reverb a go in my favorite VR games. Hands down without question the best image quality I’ve ever seen in VR in terms of sharpness. Is it the be all end all headset…probably not, but at first blush this is what I had hoped VR would be when stepping up from a Rift. More to come…
