HP Reverb Redux

Hmmm, curious play Kinger  I certainly hope that you find the lateral move worthwhile. At least we will have some subjective data from a member comparing the two. To get start, you want to have Windows updated to the latest version, run the hardware wizard in WMR, have Steam installed, and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam (beta) in your Steam Library. My launch method is to put on my headset, which will start up Windows Mixed Reality (or start WMR via the icon), take headset off and launch Steam VR, then the sim. Sounds cumbersome, but really gets pretty automatic after a while.

I have posted my settings in the other Reverb thread. YMMV. For pretty much all sims/games, IMO your resolution should be as close to 100% as possible. Otherwise your system and headset work really hard pushing the extra pixels. DCS specific, chose the VR preset, then set MSAA to 2x and PD to 1.0.

Let us know how it goes.

I’m hoping it’s not a lateral move in terms of resolution. Probably a downgrade in other areas though.

I can’t remember if I recommended this earlier or not, but since I am often plugging and unplugging my Reverb in order to travel with it, I didn’t want to be putting that constant abuse directly on my graphics card, so I bought this 3’ DisplayPort extension cable that works fine with the Reverb. I have not noticed any detrimental effects. I believe there is a limit to how long an extension can be before you have problems pushing data through the cable…but I’m not sure what length would be a problem for the Reverb, so I stuck with something short.

I’ve been able to get things running smoothly with my reverb in DCS. My only complaint is the double vision of nearby aircraft. Especially noticeable when you merge with an enemy aircraft. Is there any way to minimize or eliminate that or is it just something we have to live with?

I wonder if that has to do with motion reprojection?

Yep, I believe it’s a side affect of motion reproduction.

Thats exactly what it is. If you lower your settings enough to get out of the reprojection zone, it wont happen.

Ive found, on the rift s at least, the 40 FPS ASW zone is very tolerable for ghosting/double vision/ etc. The 20 FPS zone is pretty obnoxious and intolerable.

Easy way to test it is just minimize the settings and get into a dog fight over the open ocean and see what happens.

I don’t think many people are knocking down 90 FPS in VR consistently, so some form of reprojection is going to have to be involved. Just have to find your personal sweet spot between aesthetics and performance.

Today, after waiting for 8 weeks, I received the replacement for my broken Reverb. Unfortunately I only got a new headset, without cable or controllers (I was asked to return the complete package). Pathetic :frowning:

Yeah… Not very impressive, no. :frowning:

That sucks. :frowning:

Was that to HP? Man, you are having some bad luck MBot! Must be frustrating as hell.

Wow that’s RIDICULOUS. Sorry about your luck.

My Reverb is due to arrive Friday.

I think it is fairly inevitable I’ll get a Reverb, but the two things holding me back is (a) HP’s unerring ability to hit their own foot with whatever weapon of choice and (b) the price needs to come down a bit. It’s been out of stock in Canada for months now (so related to no (b) I’d imagine) but if they ever do make them, and then actually really want to sell them, then I’ll give it a go. Happy with the Rift and O+, but resolution is pretty much king when it comes to cockpit VR.

Sorry to hear about your issues Mbot. I’ve had zero issues with my new Reverb purchased from Amazon. I liked it so much I decided to order some lenses from VR optician today.

Looks like HP.com has put the Reverb on sale for $555. Guess my thought of using the new headset maybe Friday night will be delayed as I cancelled my Amazon order (which was $50 more expensive) and ordered from HP instead.

So I cranked up the SteamVR resolution to 200% and fired up DCS @ MSAA 2x. The image clarity is stunning and nearly what I see on my 1440p monitor. Of course my 2080TI can’t even maintain 45 fps with these settings so it was unplayable.

It seems like the GPU hardware is close to being able to run these settings in DCS. My FPS were in the low 40’s in the worst situations like flying over dense buildings or trees. Maybe with next generation of GPU’s we’ll be able to get there?

I’m going to be very interested to see how I like the Reverb with motion reprojection or whatever it’s called. I know in the Index I can’t stand using motion smoothing as the even though the frame rates are good the image quality with ghosting and other artifacting is terrible.

The worst artifacts I’ve seen from reprojection with the reverb is the ghosting of aircraft when they pass you such as in the merge. It also stutters when panning in external views. Other than that it’s not bad. Unfortunately I feel like we’ll be stuck with motion smoothing for some time as I don’t see DCS being able to run at a constant 90 FPS anytime soon.

With trackIR I would lock my fps at 60 and at 1440p on high settings that was doable with the 2080TI. I couldn’t even maintain a solid 90 fps on my monitor unless I lowered the settings to the point it’s not worth it. DCS looks god awful without some form of Anti-Aliasing applied. All the shimmering and jaggies are enough to make you sick.

I notice it (smoothing) mainly when using external views and seeing aircraft passing over landscape down low. That or when aircraft are rolling on taxiways or runways the wheels look horrible.

Sigh

I picked one up. Still not in stock in HP Canada (which seems to be run with the seriousness of some guy’s garage in Montreal), so took a bit of a risk and picked one up from Amazon Renewed. I’ve not used that option from Amazon before, but there was very little choice (a few chancers charging $950 USD plus etc as ā€˜other sellers’). The ā€˜amazon renewed’ unit has a 90 day ā€˜send back if there is hair on it’ all in for $450 USD, and I added a 4 year warranty when it inevitably fails in one eye on day 91. Worse case is it is an old bust unit and I waste my time, but the upsides are a good price and actually having Amazon to return to without hassle.

I’ll report back on the 7th when it turns up in a brown paper bag ball covered with yarn and tape.
