My friend “Hellbender” and I flew a couple of his missions. Weird but I must admit to thinking that this was the most fun I’ve had in a WW2 sim in ages. Part of it was that he’s just a fun guy to fly with. The other was that his missions were quite fun. But mainly I was wrong, 1946 holds up well. Flying Buffaloes over the channel between New Britain and PNG reminded me how good the game looks considering the technology it was built with. With water set to “perfect” it compares well with DCS at “medium”. For $4 on Steam this is sort of a no-brainer.
I flew a QMB mission last night for the first time in a few weeks. It was a Scramble mission on the Hawaii map with me in a P-39N1 against two A6M2-21’s. I figured I would be toast since I set it up for them to have the height advantage but one of those unexpected events that you almost never record, not this time though, happened to me last night. I was firing at Aircraft number 1 during a head on pass and I was sure I had missed him. About that time I got an unexpected Enemy Aircraft Destroyed message and I saw aircraft number 2 explode in the distance. What had happened was one of my cannon rounds I was firing at Aircraft number 1 hit Aircraft number 2 and blew it apart at a distance I would have never even attempted to take a shot.
Aircraft #2
The view in these two screenshots below is the view I was using when the aircraft exploded. There is no way I would have taken a shot at the far aircraft at that distance with that view.
For anyone interested this is the track of the flight. It was made using HSFX7.03 but to my knowledge there are no mod objects in the mission so it should work in just about any version of the game from v4.12.2 . forward.
quick0362.zip (1.9 MB)
The track from takeoff to landing runs for just about 9 minutes. Unzip into your records folders.
If you do view the track let me know if the custom skin on the P-39 shows in the track or if it just shows the default skin.
I am unable to find the Pacific Fighters and PE-2 Peshka trailers uploaded at M4T but I am almost certain I have the files on a hard drive. Just can’t find them now that I want them and way too many dedicated IL-2 sites have closed up shop in the last 5 years.
Still looking for a good version of the Pe-2 trailer. You used to be able to directly access UBI’s ftp to download files but now you have to know the link to get the file. That is where the internet Archive comes in handy. The ftp was saved several times at the Internet Archive and with it you can find the file names to download the files they are still hosting for IL-2 and several other games. https://web.archive.org/web/20051016142820/http://ftp.ubi.com/
Pick one of the sub folders and follow the folder for the game you like to find what DLC content may still be hosted by UBI. The files that were archived may be corrupt at times but the actual non Internet Archive link, if the file is still being hosted, tends to be good.
Another important thing to know is to check all the folders for the game you like. IL-2 has content in several of the folders and the content is unique in each of the folders. PF and pacificfighters are sub folders of other folders and IL-2 and all of its iterations follow the same type of file naming convention. I have no idea why they did not consolidate the content into one main folder with all the other sub folders in that main folder when it was setup but it has been that way since 2004.
