IL-2 Desert Wings - Tobruk

Because, with regards to WW2 aircraft, I suffer from the same affliction as @PaulRix, my resistance was pitifully futile. Pre-order - CONFIRMED.

Looking forward to Thursday! Haven’t flown the Tomahawk since the days of Oleg.

PS Navynuke. Don’t forget Chuck_Owl has a guide for CLoD

Yep, that was what I used to build my control profiles.

Yesterday i run CLOD… and… had problems with mfg crosswind rudders!
they are seen as win game controllers…
but had problems binding them to clod…

i have to dig deeper into this…
but if you have any hint…?

My wallet also just took the torpedo below the waterline. I meditated on it, and I figured anything that anything that gives the P-40 love deserves my cash.

Short range scouts also just reported a flight of MSFS dive bombers also making a b-line for said wallet.

Didn’t try booting up CloD with them yet. I’ll try to get some time with it later this week, and will report back findings.

I saw a post on that in the ATAG forums from a few months ago- I think it’s apparently a known issue?

Downloading now!

…though it’ll be several hours before I have time to even glance at it.

Desert Wings Tobruk is finally out! Congratulations to Team Fusion for this tremendous achievement! As the sun rises over Derna, a new chapter in the Il-2 Series is written. I’ll see you all on the ATAG server!

Also, Nassault did some really cool video!

It was a few steps with going to the site, clicking activate, then pasting the key into Steam and then DL’ing the Tobruk stuff after the 5.0 update had already DL’d…but nothing difficult.

Downloaded and waiting on the work day to end.

Hope there are a lot of P-40’s in the sim…I may go through several.

Same! On all counts. Hoping to get some stick time tonight.

Took the P-40 for a short ride. Love it!

Sim has some issues that need fixed, but it is opening day.

BTW, where do screenshots go?

I am not home to look piper but open up the main game directory and do a search for "screenshots
'. That should do it. Keep us posted… My resistance is crumbling…

Went torpedo bombing yesterday with a few friends from the 71st.

Between us, we sank 6 ships. Not a bad start!

That looks fun. 6 ships is massive.

I took the P-40 and one of the Bf-109s out for a spin late last night. I’m using a new Logitech gaming keyboard and couldn’t find the blasted Print Screen key, or would have shared some screens. Some random thoughts on the experience.

  • There are some bugs or limitations (hard to say), which some of might be things that we have to live with given the age of the sim. For instance, whenever I click Fly, I get a black screen. But if I Alt-Tab to another application and then back to CoD, I’m in the cockpit. Been like this since I can remember. Also, there are a number of controller issues, like sometimes just ignoring them, or the GUI not being able to handle the complete name of the controller, or it not being recognised. There is a 32 DX button maximum per controller, so with the Virpl TM50C2 throttle, I need to spit it into 2 x virtual controllers for CoD to recognize all buttons and axis.

  • The terrain looks much better than I remember, especially in England. While not having the building object detail of DCS, the Dover area in general looks superb, especially given the age of the sim. I’ll admit that I was a little worried about North Africa and all of that sand. Did I mention that there is a LOT of sand  ? Well, IMHO it looks better in the game than screenshots and videos have shown. I shot down a Tomahawk last night in a 109, but he manage to ditch in the desert. As I circled his aircraft laying in the sand, there was nothing but desert as far as the eyes could see in all directions. It really made me regret the fate that I had doomed him to and very much wish that I could have dropped him a virtual canteen.

  • The cockpit art in the new aircraft is excellent, especially since much of it is clickable. I look forward to exploring these further.

  • There are, I believe, 8 new campaigns. Some of the short, as in 6 missions. Look forward to trying these.

  • TrackIR does an aggravating thing in that if I look left or right, it doesn’t return to center. So I spend a lot of time centering TIR in order to get the reticle to show in cockpit view.

  • I’m undecided on the FM. It is definitely much different than that in Great Battles. To characterize, it feels more floaty or loose. I have more trouble bringing guns to bare on a target, because the plane is bobbing and weaving (mine and the enemy AI). Not sure if that’s more realistic or not, but I know that I prefer the GB FM so far. I’m interested in your thoughts.

All for now.

Are you getting any shimmering in the cockpits of the addon planes or over the North Africa terrain?

Also I’ve noticed that previous bindings are only working about half the time for any of my aircraft profiles, and my MFD’s aren’t seeming to be visible. I’m thinking I’ll try that utility to bind the controllers to set addresses that’s recommended in the config guide.

Definitely appreciating the flashcards also included in the document folder.

IL2: Sturmovik::IL2::: Cliffs of Dover:::: Desert Wings - Tobruk” I mean, I know that’s not really the name but really it is. I think Russia’s fascination with nested dolls has gotten out of hand.
